View Full Version : Swashies and PVP

I play a 70 Brigand with fully fabled gear. I am decent at PVP, have a 6:1 w/l ratio, and I only solo PVP. Swashbucklers simply own me though. I'll fight swashies that have half the stats and gear I have, and they still own me. It seems whenever they use en garde/inspiration, it's an "I win" button. And the smart swashbucklers only PVP when they can use those two skills. If that wasn't bad enough, I was having a hard time spamming my retarget macro and using CA's at the same time, and found myself targetting nothing half the time, and just eating damage. I went so far as to make macros for every CA I had that /targetted the swashbuckler I was fighting, and that didn't seem to work too well either. I've tried using Subterfuge on many occassions, but I have yet to have it work against a swashbuckler in PVP (and I can't figure out why.) I can fight all other classes and win most of the time. Bruisers, shadowknights, monks, I usually do a very good job against them and any other class. When it comes to Swashbucklers though, I lose every time. I've even tried kiting Swashbucklers like everybody suggests, but that doesn't work most of the time. Either I'm snared myself so I can't kite successfully, or I kite them and gain ground, and they just turn and run in the opposite direction. Then sometimes they won't even proc inspiration/en garde until after the kiting is finished, and we finally get within melee range again. What makes the matter worse, is there are some brigands out there that claim they don't have many problems at all fighting Swashbucklers, and can beat them most of the time. Yet none of them have actually showed me, or explained to me what they do exactly. When I look at my combat log after a fight with a Swash, I usually see a point in the log where my auto attacks seem to stop altogether, and my CA's either stop altogether or are hardly used at all. I haven't figured this one completely out yet. I don't think it's them using deaggro, because when I don't have a target and try using a combat art, it tells me there's nobody to use the combat art against. But it's not giving me that message, it's almost as if I'm stifled.I'm open for advice on what I can do to get a little better against them. I would also like to know what classes swashbucklers have a hard time against in PVP. Do you guys have a hard time fighting tanks, since you lack mitigation debuffs? I have considered going to Qeynos for the pure reason of becoming a swashbuckler, since I simply can't stand not being able to kill one particular class. I could save my god abilities for swashbucklers alone, but that certainly doesn't make me feel any better. So what I'm looking for basically, is advice on what I can do better in pvp against them, and to find out which classes swashbucklers have a very difficult time killing in pvp. Go ahead and tell me "lern2play" so we can get that out of the way and get to the real nitty gritty. Thanks!

Heya Kruhl - 70 swash here (from Nagafen, semi-fabled with mix of adept 3s/masters for those of you who don't know me).

I'm not going to give you any secrets to fighting swashes, but we don't have any secret abilities or stifles or anything you don't know about (browse our ability list in the stickied thread at the top of the forum if you want to check them out). I've fought you several times and have won both with and without inspiration/engarde. In general I try not to use them in pvp - unlike many of the less talented swashes on Nagafen I can most often win without them - but there's not much you can do if you let a swash control the fight, get the abilities up and get close.

The one thing you should remember is that, even after the pvp dispatch nerf, a well played brig will beat a well played swash most of the time. Your exceedingly long force-face root and exceedingly long stun should provide all the time you need to bring down a chain-wearer. I don't know what you are doing wrong but it really shouldn't be all that difficult.

Oh and don't even think about switching to a swash because there is one class you can't beat consistently as a brig - there are plenty of classes that provide a challenge for a swash, especially once people get all their EoF AAs. If you are finding the brig too difficult I'm not really sure what to tell you, because they are frankly the easiest pvp class out there, hands down.

Message Edited by Flisch on 11-25-2006 08:29 AM

It comes down to who's better at playing the class - the brig in question or the swash in question?

Most of the time I don't need inspiration to beat a brigand, or en garde, because there have been so many flavor of the month brigands lately, none of them know what the hell they're doing in PVP.

...However, I tend to use them anyway just in case it's a skilled brigand and I just might need them after all.

All I can offer is - your debuffs are your strong point, and try to time subterfuge for after said swashbuckler is below 60% health. Use deceit, stuns help. I usually don't have a problem with stuns myself because a good swashbuckler counters stuns no problem (I won't say how, but if a swashbuckler knows his class, he knows the counters for stuns and roots/nodirectionchanges ).
