Hi Folks, just wondering if anyone might have some insight as to why my 17th Swashbuckler would have 0% avoidance. It's been that way since first level. Doesn't seem to matter how much I'm carrying or what armor I wear. This is the case with no active stance. Any suggestions on what the problem might be?

check what your defence skill is at, I'm willing to bet that it is very low, the way to get this maxed out is to get hit, so go solo some mobs.

if any of your armor slots are empty you get a serious avoidance penalty

Thanks for the replies. My Defense skill is only 26... have to work on that. All my armor slots are filled.0% still seems odd.

i had this problem with my troubadour actually and thought it was a bug. as i created a swashy alt and on the island he had about 92% avoidance... so going from 92% at level 5 to 0% at level 22 seemed rather extream.

took me a while to realise it was my defence / parry skills being REALLY low for my level.

also...

AegisCrown wrote:
if any of your armor slots are empty you get a serious avoidance penalty

while thats true, dropping an armour type (e.g. from chain to leather) increases your avoidance. your then lacking mitigation though, but thought it was worth a mention. as my SK when switching from plate to robe chest gains about 5% avoidance. not really practical, but looks cool with black robe+sword of shielding (pink lightsaber)

Well, now I'm concerned. I took my 26 Defense skill and went out and tanked like crazy against MOBs and Freeps. Greys through Oranges, I tanked against all of them. No dice. My parry skill is almost maxed, but I did not get a single point of Defense. Does Defense go up based on Avoidance allowing the toon to evade an attack? If so, am I just screwed? Is there another way to increase Defense skill? Is it possible my high Parry skill is preventing the use of my Defense skill? If so, is there a way to disable Parrying? 0% avoidance really makes me vulnerable to Freeps. Thanks in advance for any further assistance.

find some grey mobs, un-equip your weapons and just let them hit you, it will probably take a while but your skill should increase.

The plot thickens. My Defense Skill in-game is 69, but shows as only 21 when looking at EQ2 players... I do not have this problem on any of my other characters.Getting a dozen greys pounding on me for 30 min didn't give me a single Defense Skill has Increase message.Despite all that, my avoidance remains 0, regardless of equipment, weight or stance. In game support says there's no known issue with Avoidance, and only suggested deleteing my UI files and repatching. The only UI mod I use is EQMaps, so I doubt this'll work. Looking more and more like character bug.
The only UI mod you use is EQMaps, however the default UI still uses files, I think this maybe what the CSO was refering to.

Mystery solved. As soon as I hit 18th and got my defensive stance, I was able to push my Avoidance into positive numbers by using it. Once I did, I was able to get my Defense to increase in combat. Once it hit 70, my Avoidance became non-zero, even without using the defensive stance. It looks like you need to have a Defense (and possibly Parry) of >70 to get a positive Avoidance number, at least at 18th level and below. More importantly, if your avoidance is 0, it does not appear Defense increases at all. A nasty spiral to get into. The moral, keep your Defense maxed, level to level. Thanks for all the feedback. You'd think the GM who responded to my ticket would have known this...
