Greetings folks,

I’ve been playing a swashbuckler for a week now (level 13) and I’m new to EQ2 (3-4 weeks). One thing I notice is the lack of swashbucklers, at least at the lower levels. In a way I really like that, but I am wondering why…

Also, I still die a bit. Sure, sometimes it’s because I know I’m going to try something foolish, other times it’s because I did not notice the word “Heroic” on top by the name and yet other times I forget to cast some new spells. However, those are newb issues and I’ll learned from those. My question on death is with the lack of healing am I in for real trouble as a primarily solo hunter? I’m guessing I’ll be solo maybe 80% of the time. I’m not sure about potions and such, and I’ll be looking for those after I get my armor/weapons at a decent level. Looks like I’m just rambling, but I think you get the picture.

One last note, I found a buckler last night. Do many of you swashies fight 1h with a buckler?

Thanks in advance for any/all assistance.

I prefer Dual Wield and offensive stance. Max damage is what it's about for us, at least in my opinion. But I guess there are sometimes use for Shield and defensive stances when tanking or taking on some tougher mob.

But when playing solo and going for one mob or small groups (2-3 non heroics) I prefer max offense.

There was definately a lack of swashies on the blue servers, some to pvp and you cant go 50 feet without running into one.

As long as you are fighting mobs appropriate to your gear and skill upgrades (for me with all Adept Is and so-so gear this means some green heroics, and yellow or less solo mobs), you wil solo very well.

I’m guessing I’ll be solo maybe 80% of the time. I’m not sure about potions and such, and I’ll be looking for those after I get my armor/weapons at a decent level.

You may already know this, but make sure to use poisons. The other potions are optional - nice to have, but not really a game-breaker if you are minding a budget (which I am). Player-made food and drink are the most important for soloing, to avoid lots of downtime.

One last note, I found a buckler last night. Do many of you swashies fight 1h with a buckler?

For purely aesthetic reasons, I currently equip a siren's round shield and a warlord's longsword. I never imagined my swashy as anything other than a light mercenary and skirmisher, and it fits. I have no problems soloing and in groups I hold my own and still add to the damage. The only time DW will rule in DPS over my (current pre-AA) 1h+shield is when I don't use CAs - which is rare in Soloing (most things die after a full round of CAs), or in long battles in groups (more likely, and in that case, I swap out to DW to maximize damage in the downtime or low-power moments).

I am planning on going for the STR and STA AA lines (swords and shields). A "true" Swash (banging on) Buckler (small shield), as it were

I just updated the poison and armor to things for my level. I have 1 nice weapon for my level and need to work on the other (none for sale).

I have a rat/brig I tried the betrayal quest at level 15, but it’s too much. I have a kerra swashie (level 13) but I might just get my rat to level 17 and try again.

Something about being different, and I figure this is a long term game anyways, might as well be what I want.

thanks for the info. I feel comfortable.

Strongly recommend Imbued rare breastplate (heal proc) and imbued weapons.......they helped me a lot at lower lvls. When i first started I didn't have the cash to fully equip in UBER gear, but i tried to keep the following at the lower tiers1) Rare imbued chainmail coat - great mitigation and heal proc2) Rare imbued duel wield weapons of the same speed. - lovely damage, if u kill quick u take less damage3) Tradeskill - scholar then jeweler to make app IV (& adept III) spell upgrades and my own jewelry.4) Poisons!!!With this format u need only 3 "ore" rares/tier which u should pickup as u lvl up your jeweler. If u get extra rares i suggest selling them at the lower tiers as your equipment quickly needs upgraded as you lvl up. The exception may be rare imbued leggings and adept III selfbuff/AoE attacks - just make sure u don't make an adept III version of spell you are going to pick at master II (lvl 14,24,34,etc)Hope this helps!! Soloing will be MUCH easier with the above & more importantly its a realistic setup

Good advice, but I need to learn a bit more about the rares and such; I don‘t have the strongest grasp on those yet. I’ve not really looked at my crafting skills yet, but I should and will.

First..welcome to swashy land!

I like to DW..I guess becuase I like tthe look and it fits my playstyle. Tried a shield one time..nothing wrong with it..just not for me

I die alot..guess I bite off more than I can chew sometimes..but oh well..sometimes you try..you die. Oh..I do solo or duo with a ranger most of the time.

And I agree that poisons, rare imbued breastplate and leggings, and rare weapons are also important.

Have fun!

its nice that there aren't many swashy it means you can pick up masters cheaper than the spell rares think i will have nearly 30 scribed by lv 36 average price is about 15g per master ... hint check the evil broker.

i love my swashy 2nd favourite class as my conjurer, very versatile

I'm not sure who the evil broker is, but I'll look into it...thanks!

Last night I was very pleased to be able to, at level 14, solo 4 level 15 knolls at the same time. I’m now level 15 and soloed 6 level 15 at once. It’s nothing I’ll be doing everyday, but it was nice. I also just killed two level 12 heroics at once, might not seem like a lot, but those were my first two.

That master kick sure does help and I’m very happy with my swashbuckler decision.

Enjoy!

AFBill wrote:

I'm not sure who the evil broker is, but I'll look into it...thanks!

It's the black market broker. There is one in Qeynos Harbor in a little room that is reached by swimming underwater in one of the canals. If you hang out in the harbor and ask if anyone will show you where the black market broker is some nice soul will show you. The black market broker has a 40% markup so what I do is use a Freeport toon to check the broker from that side and avoid the extra 20% markup. Then I just mail the item back to my Qeynos toon.
