View Full Version : Assassin or Swashy?

Hello all. I'm looking into rolling a melee DPS class and I am having trouble deciding on an assassin vs a swashbuckler. I'm looking for something that fits the most like a rogue from EQ1, which I liked a lot, but both seem to have similar play styles. I realize that assassins are supposed to have higher DPS and no utility while swashies have nice DPS and some nice debuffs. I have been trying to find some up to date information about how these two classes compare to each other DPS wise. Given similar gear is the margin very small or more pronounced? Any advice that can be given is appriciated.

assasin is t1 dps, does more out and out damage, but its more positional has more stealth required attacks.

brig/ swashy t2 dps, but more utility, group invis, nice debuffs weaken the mob nicely, mez/ stuns. can light tank nicely.

The actually difference in physichal damage done would be noticable i'd imagine but the debuffs help you stay alive that bit longer.

I find the brig/ swashy easier to solo as less postional/ stealth requirements. I deleted a very very twinking 24 assasin to make my swashy.

As a soloer I found the positional requirements for most assassin arts to difficult.

Assassin does do a very signficant amount more damage, but without the extra utility that Rogues have. However, all the requirements Assassins have on their attacks make it pretty much mandatory to be in a group to get that damage out of them.

If damage is your only concern, then definitely Assassin. It would take a major equipment and skill upgrade advantage for a Swashbuckler to do the same amount of damage as an Assassin. Swashbucklers advantages rest more on being able to do good damage and have lots of utility mixed in, but Assassin is just flat out damage and naturally will do more.

i'd second the bit about soling being a lot easier, lot easier! i can almost solo as well as my conjurer. (both equaly twinked) plus swashy are less common so masters etc are cheaper to pick up.

Yeah be a Swashbuckler. They also don't go down as easy as Assassins.
