<DIV>  Just wondering.  Everything I read it seems everyones only image of swashbucklers is that of a pirate.  Doesnt anyone think of the Three Musketeers?  Same style of fighting and daring.  When I started the game I looked at swashbuckler and my first image was of that before pirate.  Though thats not to say I dont also see the image equally fitting.  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>  However, since you cant actually sail anywhere in the game the Three Musketeers concept seems to fit so much better to me.  Now if only they had a ship and a gangplank.... then we could talk about pirates...</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>                                                    Faade</DIV>

Yup - D'artangion fits as a Swashbuckler, for sure.  The other three?  Arguably brigands.  <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> Then there's the Man in Black from the Princess Bride (although he was a pirate). Mercutio from Romeo and Juliet, perhaps. Indianna Jones. Any Bruce Campbell character.  (Army of Darkness, Autolicus from Xena, etc.) The Scarlet Pimpernel <div></div>

Moreso, I think Brigands are the pirates. I don't know about Qeynos, but in Freeport the scouts guild is a pirate ship. The Seasfury Cutthroats.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

The man in black was Dread Pirate Roberts I believe.

the real-world definition of swashbuckling is the act of hitting ones buckler (sheild) with ones sword. of course, the word has changed its meaning over the centuries, especialy after pirate movies. I think the best way to describe it now is as the heroic archtype of a privateer, a gentleman and swordsman, usualy wearing 17th century fashion. an old-fashioned action hero who relies upon skill and speed to win the day. <div></div>

I always picture a Swashbuckler as a flamboyant swordsman.  They beat their opponents using cunning wits and superb swordskills.  A pirate can be a Swashbuckler but a Swashbuckler does not have to be a pirate.<div></div>

I never understood why people assosiate Swashbucklers with pirates. In my opinion Pirates are more like Brigands. They are the ones with the missing bodyparts and caluses.<div></div>

<div></div><p> Seems odd to get all upset over an observation as simple as what I feel a swashbuckler is to me.  If you are not any of the above fine.  That was my point really.  I use the archetype of the Three musketeers for myself when I want to have something to base my RP.  If you dont like that or use that for yourself, umm, well thats up to you.</p><p>                                                    Faade</p>

<div></div><p>The Three Musketeers is in the Swashbuckler genre. The only reason pirates are so popularly associated with Swashbucklers is because the high point of the Swashbuckler movies was during the high point for pirate movies.</p><p>While the name origin is a person that hits a buckler to make a loud noise repeatedly, that is a misinterpretation. The origin of the word is actually the slang term where swashbuckler was used to describe a loud mouthed brigand. The definition over time has evolved to describe the Swashbuckler character such as the many Errol Flynn starred as or the Three Musketeers and many others.</p>

<div></div>Zorro, the quintessential swashbuckler if you ask me. Still hoping for a cape, a mask and a wide brimmed hat one day.

<div></div>Zorro was a Swashbuckler, the person that came up with the character Zorro was known for writing a lot of pretty bad Swashbuckler novels.

Why does everyone seem to think that pirate has to mean 'Pirates of the Carribean'?  Also, in order to be a musketeer, one must have a musket.I'm playing my Swashbuckler based on the dictionary definition:  A flamboyant swordsman or adventurer.<div></div>

<div></div><blockquote><hr>Raveller wrote: Also, in order to be a musketeer, one must have a musket.<div></div><hr></blockquote>Not entirely true. The French Royal Bodyguards of the 17-18th centuries were called musketeers regardless of actual armament.

<div>To me, Swashbuckler is a funky mix between Elaine and Guybrush in Monkey Island.</div><div>We got the flair and 'dignity' of Elaine, and the flamboyance and sometimes foolheaded attitude towards risk of Guybrush. We'll.. quite a bit more, but real tired so cant try search my head for right enghlish words... Just mold those two (thinking mainly of the characters they have in MI1) and ye have a funky swashie, with no Pirates of Carribean influx :p</div><div> </div><div> </div>

<div></div><p>Brigands are the true pirates, We plunder booty and get all of the women, and drink a lot of Pirate drinks, like rum and whiskey. Swashbucklers get all of the men and plunder up some man booty while drinking wine coolers (not to mention poofy shirts)!</p><p>Oh yeah, I just went there.</p>

<div></div>On the contrary, I think swashbucklers don't limit themselves to a life of hard seamanship to woo more of the ladies... preferably young widowed rich :smileytongue:

<div></div><p>So, Desann, you are a true pirate. One question for you then.</p><p>Who's cabin boy are you?</p><p>I feel kinda sorry for you, all those long months at sea with only other (male) pirates to keep your bed warm.</p>

Te-he this post cracks me up ...especially reading the musketeers comments, all I could say is Porthos. Once I started to think about it the more I noticed I seem to play my toon like a female verson (disney Porthos). Love for many weapons, light hearted and funny, on that good side, but who said I couldnt be a pirate <span>:smileyvery-happy:</span><div></div>

<div></div><div></div><div>/salute Xenon Knight for knowing the root/meaning of Swashbuckler!</div><div> </div><div>Yes, whatever happened to those boats we were going to be able to own?  Oh well, perhaps our ship will come in someday.  Until then, to live by our wits and our swords at least puts us in the realm of swashbuckler possibilities, if not as pirates then as landbound rogues of almost equal romantic appeal and deadliness. It would help if we had some interesting hats along the way. So much easier to picture a Musketeer with a plumed hat, or even a pirate with one.</div><p>Message Edited by Unluki on <span class="date_text">01-16-2006</span><span class="time_text">11:54 AM</span></p>
