I am aware that there are conflicting views on the subject of Fae/Spirit Bud blending. Personally, it makes sense to me that Fae are born in the normal way and then find a spirit bud to blend. If you are one of the people who accept the spirit bud forming into Fae theory, then feel free to alter that bit of the story in your mind. How the spirit bud got into Aybre is less of an issue than who the spirit bud actually is/was. Thank you!

Author’s notes: As much as I hate to admit it, my lore is not completely up to date. I know some things in this story will be incorrect according to lore, but I will try my best to fix them. I have been doing research and hopefully that is enough so far. I’m continually learning more about the Fae and hope that my lore isn’t *too* horrible. Any languages used in this story are completely made up. So, bear with me, and enjoy. Also, a ~*~ represents a change in point of view, as a --- represents a “skip” in time, so to speak. Feedback is appreciated!

P.S. All NPC’s personalities in this story (including Queen Amree) are completely made up by me. In reality, I don’t know what they would say or do, so do not take anything an NPC says in my story to be a telling of their in-game personality or attached to lore in any way.

Chapter 1: Union

Caera sighed as she sauntered into the Blood Haze Inn in North Freeport, careful to remain unnoticed. It wasn't as if a Feir'Dal in Freeport was completely unheard of, but she could not risk the militia taking any interest in her. Fortunately for her, the Blood Haze was only loosely guarded on Feastday, and almost no one was around to see her. Foolish, she thought. They call us ignorant, but they have no idea how complacent they have become themselves.

The lithe wood elf ascended a flight of stairs, her boots hardly making a sound as she creeped up. It wasn't like her to be nervous, but she felt a twinge of concern boiling in the pits of her stomach. She found herself wondering if it was the right choice to take this job. Well, she didn't really have a choice- Queen Amree appointed her this task and as the new ruler of Kelethin, Caera had no choice but to comply. Even if she had no particular liking for the Queen herself, she was loyal to her family's homeland.

With that in mind, she grasped at the first door on the right, her hand encasing the doorknob. She let it linger for a moment and took a deep breath. Finally turning the knob, she stepped into the room.

It was nothing like she thought. Instead of being dark and mysterious, the room she entered was brightly lit, with pictures of various men and women lining the walls. Beautifully crafted chandlers hung from chains off of the roof, and ornate tables were strewn about as if the person living there wanted to create the feeling of a makeshift tavern. It was actually quite pretty- Caera hadn't seen a better setup in a home for a long time. Even the Djinn pillows were placed carefully in the corners for people to relax on. The only thing Caera found out of place was the owner- shouldn't they have been eager to get Caera on her way?

"Hello!" she called out into the house carefully, trying not to be loud. "It's Caera, I'm here for the, er, package."

When she received no response, she looked around and unsheathed one of her daggers. She had no idea what she was expecting to find but she knew that it was better to be safe than sorry in Freeport. It was not impossible that someone arrived before her to take the package she was sent to retrieve. She slowly walked towards the stairs to the second floor, not knowing exactly where the led. When the stairs squeaked under her weight she cringed, but continued.

A single candle burned in the bedroom, which was atop the landing she just stepped onto. It was much darker on the second floor, so much so that Caera felt a small chill creep up the back of her spine. "Hey, is anyone--"

"Shut up, woman! I'm in the middle of something. Really, how rude! Strolling into my home without so much as a knock, and then having the audacity to..." An Erudite yelled from inside the room. He rose to his feet and looked at her, then sighed and clenched his fist, trying to calm himself. Apparently, Erudites did not have any stomach for being interrupted in the middle of reading a book. The pulsing insignias that covered his face glowed faintly as his expression softened.

"I apologize, Caera. I was not expecting you this early. I would have thought you to come in the evening. I was unprepared..."

The Erudite, who revealed his name to be Ooleuiao, wrapped his hand around a small package, which was wrapped in plain brown paper and held together with wax. "This is it," he smiled at the box, patting it. In truth, Caera had no clue what was in the box and so found this very odd.

"Er- right. I'm not supposed to ask questions, and I'm due back bef-" Caera started, but was interrupted. And you call me rude? She thought.

"Yes, yes I know, elf. Amree will be expecting this. Though, I can't imagine what for. It's in complete shambles now, catatonic almost... I mean, after all of that, who wouldn't be?" He grinned at her, finally breaking his gaze with the box. "I assume you know what is in the box, Caera?"

She shook her head 'no' and held out her hand for the box. "Please... Queen Amree will not be pleased if I waste my time chatting."

Ooleuiao sighed once again and placed the box carefully in her hand. "As if you owe your loyalty to her. She is the one who took over your home, no? If I had found someone on my couch after I came home from a vacation... well, I suppose you know your people better than I do. Caera... be careful with her."

More confused, the Feir'Dal just nodded her head. She tucked the box into one of her backpacks and made sure to surround it with cloth, as if it were a fragile peice of glassware. "Thank you, Ooleuiao. I'll give the Queen your best." And with that, she left the Erudite to his reading.

Message Edited by Kerisan on 02-02-2007 05:32 PM

           ~*~

With excitement boiling beneath her cream-colored skin, Aybre floated gracefully out of her room and couldn't stop herself from giggling. "It's the day, mother! Father! Can you believe it? It's..." she sighed, trailing off. Her mother smiled warmly at Aybre, taking in the wonderful visage that was her prized daughter. Her jubilant, charismatic daughter who was finally turning into a woman. But this realization brought more than smiles to her face- it also brought a due amount of worry to her heart. Aybre saw this and frowned, hoping that her mother would be proud. It pained her to see her unhappy.

"Aybre..." she began, her warm smile having turned into a mixture of careful concern and realization.”You know what will happen soon. It is going to change your life forever... you know that." Aybre's smile quickly faded into an angry, confused expression. "I know, mother. It happens to every single one of us. You should stop being so worried about it... I mean, a Spirit Bud won't pick a child unless it fits the bill, right? You should know more than anyone the truth in that. You're a priest, after all!" Aybre tried her best to sound convinced that the melding with her Spirit Bud didn’t frighten her… but somewhere inside her, she was terrified.

"Of course, of course... I just... I want life to be great for you. It's a mother’s worry, that's all... So, are you ready?" Her mother beamed once again, her face lighting up as if all worry had been erased.

"Ready? For what?"

  ----

As it turned out, Aybre's parents had been planning a picnic for her. They took her deep into the Faydark, a remote section that was hardly inhabited by anything save for insects and plant life. It was calm, and the hustle and bustle of Kelethin was only a whisper upon the wind. Aybre slowly prepared the blanket behind a nearby waterfall, where the air was still cool and the rushing water provided a misty sanctuary. The Greater Faydark has such beautiful getaways, she thought, smiling. I'm lucky to live here, to have Tunare's grace watching over me.

It wasn't long before her mother and father arrived with a couple of baskets, full of freshly picked fayberries, apples, and other assorted fruits. They didn't have to go to the trouble of cooking a meal and dragging it out all the way to their picnic site, but instead, they brought empty baskets to fill with fruits along the way. The Fae knew the Faydark better than anyone and fresh-picked was always better than anything that's sat for a day or more.

The family gathered around in a circle, the three of them connecting hands. One by one, their eyes closed, and they began to relax themselves. Instead of a constant flap, their wing speed changed to a slow, soft wave motion. Their whole bodies rocked backwards and forwards, moving with the rhythm of their own flight. They began the feasting prayer to Tunare, thanking her for her generousness, and thanking the forest itself for giving them their food.

"A ji ni-hau Tunare", said Aybre, almost too low for anyone but herself to hear. In Faerlie, it meant "Guide my path, Tunare." And that was the signal for the prayer to end.

It wasn’t long before Aybre began to fill herself with all the strawberries she could manage to find buried in the picnic basket- they were her favorite. She giggled every time her parents would try to grab one, and would steal it right out of their hands. Her eyes were brighter than anyone had seen them in a long time- it would be an understatement to say she was happy.

However, as quick as she began, she had to stop. Fae stomachs aren’t known for holding the most food, so she filled quickly. Her mind wandered momentarily, when something hit her. “Mother… I’m going to take a walk, okay?” Without waiting for an answer, and leaving her confused parents behind, Aybre floated away slowly, feeling something strange beginning to stir inside of her.

It felt somewhat like instinct. After about a half an hour of wandering, she realized that she didn’t know exactly where she was going. It was as if her body was leading itself, knowing just where to go. She considered that, seeing what day it was, she was being led to the Nursery like all coming-of-age Fae, but dismissed it. The Nursery was in the complete opposite direction. For some reason, she was heading deeper into the forest.

In the distance, Aybre noticed a Feir’Dal running around in what seemed to be circles. She had a worried expression tattooed all over her face and was cursing in her native tongue. “Dammit! Where is it? I can’t believe this, the whole thing just… Oh, no... I need to tell her…” The words were almost too far away for Aybre to understand but what she did catch piqued her interest. It seemed inevitable that as soon as the Feir’Dal went running off, she would investigate.

It was a box, and a small one at that. She didn't have to search much to find it; it fell down the hill and onto the path, just a few feet in front of her. Aybre couldn’t tell what was inside but she could feel the pure energy pulsing out of it. For some reason, it was so tempting to open the box… her fingers almost developed a personality of their own. She shed her inhibition of opening other’s property and let her curiosity sweep her away. But what she found inside wasn’t a magical artifact or a precious gem, as she expected. It was a beautiful, round ball of pure magic. With the warmth now came waves of emotions- from all spectrums. In a single moment, Aybre felt happy, depressed, angry, lustful and hurt.

The ball began to vanish, not into thin air, but into Aybre’s hands. It appeared as if it was melting into her skin, and Aybre couldn’t believe what was happening. Now? She thought desperately. But, I’m not ready…

With a sudden wave of exhaustion, Aybre fell into a deep, dreamless sleep on the grasses of the Faydark.

Message Edited by Kerisan on 01-31-2007 06:38 PM

Message Edited by Kerisan on 01-31-2007 06:44 PM

Chapter 2: Memories

The morning found Aybre curled into a tight ball; dew sticking to her body. The night had been wet and cold, unusually so for this region, but the little green-winged Fae never stirred. Her sleep completely overtook her, and the only thing that caused her to wake was the rising of the morning sun.

Aybre moaned lightly as she woke up, a yawn passing her lips. Still on the ground, she lay on her front and stretched her wings completely out, shaking the water droplets from them. Where am I? She blinked in a moment of confusion, forgetting what happened the previous day, if only for a moment. When her senses came to, she stared at her hands for a long while.

So there it is. I’m an adult now. I guess that can’t be so bad.

She tried to remember, something, anything. To access the memories of the spirit her body now encased. Come on! She pushed, the voice in her mind begging for something, anything. In her failure, she frowned. “I guess it isn’t like everyone says” she shrugged, pushing herself off of the ground and into the air.

With one final stretch, she began her trip back to Kelethin, where her family would surely be waiting.

~*~

“What do you mean you lost it? Was it stolen?” Queen Amree barely contained the rage the welled up inside of her. “Caera, I chose you for this task because I trusted you. It seems my trust has been misplaced.”

“No, ma’am, I just-“ Caera began.

“Just what? You ‘just’ lost a precious Spirit Bud? You ‘just’ let decades, perhaps centuries of memories slip into the forest, for anyone to pick up? You ‘just’ destroyed generations worth of Fae life? Is that what you were going to say?” Amree couldn’t keep herself from screaming as loud and as seriously as a Fae could scream.

Losing a Spirit Bud was almost treasonous within the Fae community; losing all of those memories and experiences, and the life of a handful of Fae past was almost inconceivable. Again, the Queen’s anger bubbled.

“Caera! I can’t believe this. That Bud was special. It was hurt. What do you think the Teir’Dal did to it, cradle it in a little blanket and sing it to sleep? No, Caera, they tortured it. They experimented on it. It was probably tortured for hours on end, with them trying to access its memories. Who knows what they got from it! More importantly, a Spirit Bud is not just a ball of nothingness! It’s…”

She stopped herself. A tear flowed down her cheek as two final words escaped her lips: “Get out.”

Caera shook slightly and walked out, stiff as a board. She couldn’t believe what she had done. I didn’t know…she told herself over and over. I didn’t know…

~*~

Aybre took the acorn lift up to Kelethin. She hoped her parents wouldn’t ask too many questions- she didn’t have enough answers to satisfy herself. Already, she felt different. On the entire walk home she racked her brain, searching for some small string that might trigger any type of reaction from the memories she knew were within her. All she got was a headache.

The busy platforms of her home city usually provided a comfort for Aybre but not today. Even though she only just woke up, she felt sore all over and her eyelids were heavy. She knew something was not right, but she passed it off as being normal to the binding of her and her new Spirit Bud… if it was even working right.

Only two more platforms, she sighed, wishing she was home.

After a long moment void of all thought, Aybre furrowed her brows. Something tugged at her in the back of her mind, sending a chill down her spine. A memory? She hoped. The Fae floated along at a snails pace while she strained her brain, willing that green string in the back of her mind to come forward. I’ve finally got something, don’t you go away!

Despite her heroic efforts, though, the pulsing in her consciousness remained. No memories arose, just the faint feeling of melancholy. But perhaps that was just her.

“Aybre! Tunare’s feet, I’m glad you’re home!” Her mother grinned as Aybre approached the front door of her house. It was just like Aybre expected- she knew that bonding occurred, and now she was going to pick her brain.

“Leave her alone, Alyssa.” Her father chimed in, sensing Aybre’s reluctance. Opening the door for her, he gave her a nod. Go rest, he seemed to tell her.

Message Edited by Kerisan on 02-01-2007 06:09 PM

So that’s exactly what she did. She got into her room, shut the door behind her and flopped face first on top of her bed. “Mmmf,” she muffled into her pillows, tears rolling down her face for no reason. She felt so sad, and so angry. In fact, she didn’t even feel like herself anymore. Aybre wondered if the Bud was showing its colors after all.

“Riis ani tub era karee,” a voice whispered in her mind. It was not her own, rather that of an older female Fae. The language was hard for her to understand; it was obviously a variant of Faerlie, but it had to be more than 200 years old. She guessed it meant ‘Sorrow is my only companion’.

Aybre found herself scoffing and shaking her head, still buried within her pillow. Now I’m hearing voices. Great. Spirits can’t talk through memories; I’m pretty sure the previous ‘owner’ of the bud is long gone.

But she heard it again.

“Teyre ah neo y’lana par lie swe terii,” it whispered. ‘The black night consumes the weak’.

What? She lay confused, wondering if she was either going crazy, or her new ‘friend’ was.

~In her minds eye, something began to develop. It was a young Fae woman, obviously already past adult age, but full of youth nonetheless. She appeared happy, wearing a black and white apron and a smile painted on her lips. Her wings were a soft blue with a hint of pink within, and her hair was a light purple. She was in Kelethin, what appeared to be hundreds of years ago. The Feir’Dal still had complete control over the city and she was the only Fae in sight. Not to mention, she was significantly smaller than any other Fae Aybre had ever seen.

“Hyeru! Master! Look, I got you more spices for your casserole! The market was flooded this morning, and I got a ton of spices for only two gold.” She handed a bundle of sacks to a tall wood elf, who in turn patted the Fae’s head. “Good work, Raelysa. I will be out for the day, so head to the house and watch over the twins. Hopefully I will be back by dusk but, if not, you’ll need to tuck them in for me.”

Raelysa nodded. “Jiji unee! Yes, ma’am!”

Rael headed towards the home that was her master’s, a large but not oversized home that showed the promise of wealth without making it a big deal. She opened the door carefully and saw the two Wood Elf children busy doing their own thing, playing a game of tic-tac-toe with sticks and stones. “Hah! I win!” The boy shouted. His sister wrinkled her nose and stuck out her tongue. “Well aren’t you just the best?” she remarked sarcastically.

Before long, the sun was beginning to disappear underneath the horizon and the crickets began chirping in the forest below. A slow drizzle dampened the streets of Kelethin and it was getting hard to keep candles lit with the humidity building.

“Come on, Sylva. You too, Brady.” Rael waved both of her hands and pointed towards the bedroom. “Your mother will not be happy if you two aren’t in bed by the time she gets home. Let’s go.” Her smile still hadn’t faded, it was as if she held a constant warmth beneath her skin.

After she shushed the two of them with a children’s tale and put out all the candlelight, Raelysa wandered out to the back porch. Rain was a blessing to her; she loved the feel of the cold droplets against her pale skin, and the smooth whisper of the wind running through her hair. But there was a different whisper upon the wind this night. The whisper of voices.

“Fire!” she could swear hearing someone call. It was too close to be misunderstood, and her heart dropped. She lost her smile. An inferno began to break out on one of the platforms of Kelethin. A forest fire in this weather? Impossible. But it wasn’t any accidental fire.

Flaming arrows joined the rain in their descent upon Kelethin. Raelysa couldn’t believe her eyes. The children! Master! The welfare of her surrogate family suddenly sprang to her mind. As fast as her wings could take her, she rushed into the twin’s room. They were gone.~

~*~

Caera returned to the exact location where she knew she accidentally dropped the Bud. Luckily, it was only a few hours later, so the chances of the spirit being untouched was high. All I have to do is find it.

She noticed a small dent in the ground, which no one else would have spotted if they were not looking for it. It looked like the perfect size- the corner of the box dug into the ground and it rolled down after that, she deducted. Perfect.

A small piece of brown wrapping paper and a few crumbles of hardened wax strewn across the path below gave Caera new hope. She would find the box, perhaps not in one piece, but she had to find it. After that, she could find the Spirit Bud. Somehow. She followed the tiny trail of paper and wax until, about two steps later, a crumple of paper and a smashed box was all that was left of the package she carried.
Caera picked up the remnants of the package and stuffed in her bag, this time making sure it touched the bottom of her sack. Stay in there! She commanded, sighing.

Message Edited by Kerisan on 02-01-2007 06:13 PM

(continuation of Chapter 2)
---

Her trip back to Kelethin was uneventful, save the incessant butterflies chirping around her stomach, anticipating the Queen’s reaction to seeing her face. In truth, Amree’s opinion mattered little to Caera, but she couldn’t stand letting her city down. She made a pact to her family- to protect their homeland- and that’s what she intended to do.

The guards eyed Caera carefully, having noted the fight with Queen Amree earlier. They kept a weary hand on their swords, not willing to take any chances. Pointedly, the wood elf ignored them.

“Queen Amree?” Caera called, entering the Royal Hall. She half-hoped that she wasn’t around, but Caera knew better. The Queen rarely left the Royal hall and, considering recent events, the Queen had even less reason to leave. The older Fae woman finally appeared after a minute or two whispering something to her guards. Her face was deathly pale, as if she had just witnessed something tragic.

“Yes, Caera?” The words came, but with an icy edge attached to every letter. The look on her face was positively stony, and she refused any eye contact with the elf.

“I found the box, your majesty. But… the Spirit escaped. All that’s left of the package is torn pieces. I’m sorry… but I will find her. She has to be out there somewhere, right?” Caera hoped that the more she said the words, the truer they would become.

“Stop,” Amree whispered. “Stop looking for her.” Her voice was still cold, waves of sadness and anger emanating through the tones.

“But, your majesty—“

“No buts, Caera. I’m afraid your job is done.” The Queen of the Fae turned to face her finally. “The bud has bonded already.” Turning her back again, she took to the nearest window and stared into the Faydark.

“But… I… it… are you sure?” Caera could hardly form words.

“One of my guards told me that he witnessed a young woman showing the signs of a bond shortly after you told me that the package was gone. He trailed her for a bit and noticed that rather than being energetic, like recently-melded Fae usually are, she was tired and depressive. I think you can make the inferences from there.” Amree sighed. “I’m having someone bring her to the Royal Hall tomorrow. I am having a friend come from Qeynos to check her out, to make sure she really is the one. If it is not, then you may continue your search. If it is her, however, then you will be assigned to protect her.”

Caera frowned, and Queen Amree turned to face her for the last time. “If you fail again… it will mean death.”

Message Edited by Kerisan on 02-03-2007 11:01 AM

Chapter 3: Mystic

“I don’t understand.” Aybre furrowed her brow and looked at the guard curiously. He was large for a Fae, and truthfully, Aybre was kind of intimidated. But her curiosity kept the words flowing: “The Queen wants to see me? I haven’t done anything wrong…”

“You’ll find out when yeh get there. I don’t really know anythin’.” He looked at her. “Please, Queen Amree urges that seeing you is of the utmost importance.” He pushed her lightly into the doors of the Royal Hall.

Aybre bit her lip and hovered over the ground momentarily before the doors, and with a sigh opened them. She was a bit more nervous now- she’d seen the Queen before but never like this. At speeches, perhaps, but on a personal level? She wondered if anyone had been at that stage with her, at least within the common population.

After the guard left her, Aybre was alone in the Hall. “Hello?” She rasped, hardly the volume of a whisper. It was enough to signal the arrival of a very large (at least in her eyes) Koada’Dal woman: her eyes were a gleaming pale blue, and her hair was a bundle of platinum blond bound atop her head. A spectral dog trailed behind her, padding around on the wooden floor.

“Aybre?” She smiled.

“Y-yes, that’s me.” The Fae’s wings fluttered a little out of sync, an obvious sign of nervousness.

“I apologize for all of the mystery. You must be very confused. My name is Raiza, I am a Mystic from Qeynos. I’m sure you probably have an idea why you’re here… why don’t you sit?” Her voice was beautiful, just as beautiful as her perfect appearance. She brushed a long strand of golden hair out of her face and smiled. She sat down in sync with the Fae, across the round table.

The woman didn’t wait for Aybre to ask any questions. “Aybre, Queen Amree and I have a suspicion that your Spirit Bud was at one point in history a Fae woman named Raelysa. We intended on keeping her safe, but we never wanted her to meld into another Fae. Unfortunately, Raelysa is involved in some serious business involving the War of the Fay and revenge. Every time this bud has bonded into a Fae, the recipient ended up facing… well, it’s obvious, no?”

Raiza tilted her head, frowning just slightly. “We didn’t want it to happen again.”

Aybre’s head began to pound. “Personal grudge?” she questioned, her voice whispering. She spoke in Faerlie, suddenly forgetting anything else. Is she saying I’m going to die?

With a shake of her head, Raiza began again. She had so much to say, but she didn’t know if she should say it all. “It was one of the very first battles of the War.” She half-mumbled. “Her participation in stopping the oncoming force brought down a very important member of past Teir’Dal society. Along with his guards, a priest of Innoruuk fell. It is rumored that he held the knowledge that would someday bring the Teir’Dal to complete power. He never told his secrets. At least, he never told them to anyone he intended to.”

Aybre closed her eyes. “What does that mean? The secrets were lost forever? Isn’t it their own fault that they brought—“

“No, the secrets were not lost. One person heard his last words- the words that revealed the secret. Raelysa killed him, Aybre… she heard his words.” Raiza shook her head. Being a Koada’Dal, Aybre knew she would have much preferred that the secret died with the priest.

“So, the descendents of whatever… clan… he led, they’re looking for Raelysa so they can try and extract the memory?” Aybre ventured.

“Yes, and they almost succeeded recently. We freed her from captivity but she was lost again in the process… then you found her.” Raiza patted Aybre’s hand consolingly. “Aybre, I need to ask you one question, and you must answer me truthfully. Is Raelysa your companion?”

“Yes.”

The high elf nodded. She reached for the choker on her neck, a beautiful peace made of woven grasses and small yellow flowers. It glowed slightly, a faint greenish color, and it seemed like the flowers, although they might have been many years old, never wilted. Raiza untied the neckpiece at the back and put it on Aybre, on whom it looked more like a loose necklace than a choker, but retained its timeless beauty.

“It served me for many years. Hopefully the blessing upon it will be as strong for you as it was for me.” She smiled warmly. “I hope I will see you soon.”

With that, the woman turned her back and picked up her ghostly pup, cradling it in her arms. She disappeared into a darkened room, from which Aybre could hear whispering. Queen Amree’s voice was one of them.

Just as the voices stopped, Amree floated out of the door and into the Hall itself, approaching Aybre. “Raiza seems to think you are stronger than the others. She thinks you will do a good job protecting Raelysa. I trust her, so therefore I trust you.” A smile formed upon her lips. “I will have someone talk to your parents. I cannot promise you that your life will be easy. But I can tell you that anytime you need something, there will be someone around to help you.”

Message Edited by Kerisan on 02-03-2007 11:16 AM

I've had some medical problems as of late within my family, so I haven't gotten to finishing the next chapter, but rest assured, I'm working on it!
