Mostly in a Rp Lore thread. I highly doubt that a Monk will go about in an rp since saying that he is level 25 or 70 or a Priest or any other class. The only ingame references I've seen are 'seasons' and sometimes 'circles' I'm just wondering how they measure each other up, I think the Monks used Headbands/Sashes/Shackles/Robes(Wistleing Fists) to denote effevtive rank/level, but I have no idea on some of the other classes.

Your Gi represents your level. You start off with the white training tunic, move up to Yellow/Orange, find Red in Bloodlines at level 30-50, then Purple from the Gi of the Dark Disciple at level 60, and finally the Blue Ghostly Wraps of Torment at level 70.

Anyway. Level isn't represented in a roleplay/lore aspect anyway.

Message Edited by Cusashorn on 10-01-2006 10:35 AM

But that doesn't help with figuring out the other classes. nor does it help with fanfiction, and more improtantly possible fancomics, a very visual medium. I've heard of dabbling with 'circles'

I ignore the levels of my characters in my fanfiction. They're as powerful or as weak as the story calls for them to be.

I think the Summoning Elementals book in game gives an idea about how you determine a Conjurers level. The more experienced conjurers will be able to summon more powerful and more difficult to control Elementals to do their bidding.I suppose the same could be said with the Necromancers and their undead servants.Really, it is all about skill. If they have their roleplay flag up, you will just have to either watch them fight or fight them to see what level they are. (of course, you could always examine but that is cheating if you are really roleplaying).

In my own rp experience, as others have stated, actual game level has no bearing on the characters age. I usually refer to my level as a rank, or a circle, never a season, because my characters range between 26 and 556 seasons, heh. I usually use rank when refering to a martial talent (like a warrior or scout), similar to martial combat ranks, and circles to refer to the circles of power that a spellweaver has mastered, but even with that, I try not to let game mechaincs interfere with rp so much. IE, if my level 42 berserker is a soldier who trained under the Queen's Militia in Neriak (totally made up), then, in roleplay situations, he's going to be a very skilled, battle hardened war veteran, who has the skills and abilities to match, even if I haven't had the time to build him up to level 70 in game.

I try not to let roleplay be hampered by game mechanics, only game lore. In otherwords, though this character may be a battle hardened Teir'Dal who has lived be the strength of his will, and the strength of his blade for the past 300 years or so, he doesn't proclaim to have stuck the Avatar of War in the back and handed Lucan the Soulfire, after punching the Avatar of Tranquility in the mouth. Nor does he claim to have been alive for 2000 years, wandering around, sewing hate in the name of Lanys T'vyl, the true embodiment of Hate, and he'd know, since he was her son! (Lanys has only been around for 600-ish years, is weaker than much Inny, and there is absolutely no reason to imagine she has had any offspring).

Of course, that's just me.

I think it would be best to find a terminology that fits with your specific class. You mentioned you play a monk. Monks use martial arts, which use different colored belts to siginify rank. When I was a kid, I was enrolled in karate classes for a few years. The belt ranks we had were white, yellow, orange, purple, blue, green, brown, and finally black, in that order. Now that's eight belts, and the game's level cap is 70, so I would say the current level cap doesn't allow you to achieve the level of black belt. So at level 70, you could say that you're a 'tenth-degree brown belt.'Obviously, this ranking system would only work for monks (and maybe bruisers,) so you would have to come up with something else for other classes. For instance, when it comes to cleric classes, you could perhaps use the different ranks of priests in the Catholic Church; so perhaps a level 45 templar could call himself a 'fifth ranked cardinal' or something similar. This could all become really confusing really quick, but I think it could be done.

RP-wise, I find rank/level not important. simply put, if you are of comparable or equal strength, your worthy of consideration for grouping. If you are of a lower level, you simply lack the training and experiance to go out on an adventure with me. If your higher level, you have more experiance and i may learn something from you.

Also, If you have a title from a faction, your ranking pretty high in your respective title's field.

i.e. If your an Exalted mage, regardless of uber gear, you may have my professional respect by title alone.

so to answer a question, level/rank/season have nothing to do with age or experiance, just a way of denoting your place in the adventuring world for a common purpose.

The reason I was wanting to know is because I plan to have the main character "Measure up" a small squad of a mercenary guild. They need class rank quests all solo ^_^ sort of like the Headband questlines.

I suppose you could say something along the lines of "I have achieved my 28th level of mastery." I agree though that speaking of level numbers in a RP setting is flawed. I too have seen things like so-and-so of the 28th circle....or people saying "I am in my 28th season". I myself just don't bring it up. Monks are show-offs anyhow. "hey look at my neato belt". blargh. Terabithian Evensong, singer of 34 songs.

Most hardcore RPers I know do not consider level to have anything to do with the strength of a character..however, because it is an integral part of the game, a means of communication about such things arose to fill the need when looking for groups, or communication about quests and items. Saying "rank", "circle," or "season" fills this role, and, to most, doesn't serve as a serious means of quantifying your characters strength at their given profession, but allows IC communication about your ooc level, so that you don't have to break character just to get a group, or talk about weapons, items, and quests.
