From what I can tell from the brief search I've done none of the languages in the EQ world are real languages, just new fonts. This makes such things as choosing a last name difficult. In my particular case I am trying to pick a last name for my troll.Previously I had the last name "Baby'Eaterz" which the GM's have now taken from me twice. Now this is NOT a rant against the GMs, or a discussion of if the name is RP or not. I don't care what fiction you've read or what other consceptions you have about the merrits of the name. All I am looking for here is some advice or help on translating the name into Ykeshan. If there is a real ykeshan language made up or if a group of RP scholars has made one up, I would love a translation. If there isn't one made up yet I would love some advice on the grammer and spelling of such a name. Thanks in advance for any imput you guys have. I'm not as into the lore of this game as I would like to be, but I would really like to get this as close to authentic or at least believable as I can.

This really isn't as much of a lore board problem as it is on the roleplaying board. The only way you can choose an appropriate surname for a troll is to take notice of the structure and spelling of surnames of other troll NPC's in the game.

Mind you, you're not going to find too many as trolls don't often take a surname.

Most surnames i've seen on trolls are very similar to what I originaly chose... Bloodrinker for example is a troll that wanders east fp docks. No help there.

Well, I think you were already on the right track in comming up with a surename, it's just that some people get kinda touchy about eating babies :smileyhappy:

One suggestion I was given was that trolls being a Brutish and stupid race, the action should come first in a sentence. The actions of killing or eating are more important that what was actually killed or eaten. So I need words for "to eat" or "eater of" and "Babies" that sound suitable ykeshan. I guess some will be offended, but bloodrinker as a last name can be offensive too. And there are some fairly graphic references in this game, for example a troll wandering freeport is often heard to say in random dialog: "I like it when they not really dead. It tickles going down " No matter, trolls are offensive by nature.

It's a fine distinction, but I can see them taking away that name if someone reported it. Easiest thing to do would be to probably use a different form of "baby" to fit the same feel. Whelp, pup, etc, etc.. lots of choices here, grab a thesaurus A word of advice tho... don't go with fetus ><

Instead of Fier 'Dal, (specific only to EQ), try a search for fantasy langauges; you'll get a quazillion listings! Mostly Tolkien but not all.

Here's a few:

http://www.dragons-inn.org/Ifreann/elf_eng.html

http://www.beggarsfeast.org/library/garglanguage.htm

http://www.fantasist.net/elven.shtml

http://library.thinkquest.org/28010/lang.htm

http://www.angelfire.com/scifi/mta/languages.html

There are no real languages in EQ Live or EQ2 that I know of. There are racial fonts, but that is all. There are a few odd words in Thexian and some of the other languages, but just a few words is all.

Like I say though it won't do much good, and the roleplay effect will be lost, if you are the only one that understands the language.

It's better to try to speak 'racially' in Common (if that makes sense to you).

Now for documents or stories, then the 'old tongues' may be used, since players will often view it as a riddle to be solved, (which in fact it is).

But for everyday in-game communication, it is not practical.

Message Edited by Mary the Prophetess on 08-20-2006 03:08 PM

I understand that alot of the RP value to others that don't know me will be lost. But I am already so well known on my server as the baby eater that I don't want to change from that. HOwever I do want the last name back. I am trying to find a good translation or believable one cause if i choose "Baby'Eaterz" again I'm sure I'll get my surname privilage revoked. ( I have already had it taken from me twice)

Instead of trying another language in which very few people would recognize, maybe you could try finding a similar word to use. You could try Younglin'Eaterz? (Too many letters?) Or maybe Newbie'Eaterz?

I rather like the idea mentioned earlier of something like Whelp'Eaterz actually, it says the ame thing as Baby'Eaterz without being quite as likely to get anyone up it arms

most of my toonz names are from other languages.

Hakan, for example means 'Little Fire' in another language, how appropriate sounding for a half dark elf imho. and being that is a wizard makes the name more applicable. same goes for my Fury, Tamal, whose name means 'Dark Tree'. My Wood elf cleric is named Bronwe, Sindarin(wood elf in tolkien's world) for faith.

If you get a sampling of Ykeshan, i'm sure you vcan find a closely sounding language to form your surname.

Try "bebi-eater" sounds like baby eater but does not look like it. Just a suggestion.
