Which goes to the Ethernere at death, eventually to be reincarnated or to go into the realm of one of the gods?

So, according to Vhalen, is there no distinction between the two? Or are spirits the ones in the afterlife, and souls the ones that escape back to Norrath, or what?

According to Vhalen, What we know about Death in Everquest and Norrath is only the one inch of an iceberg 500 miles long. :/

We have shamans who are in contact with the spirits. We have that Zebuxoruk guy. I, personally, don't feel as if it should be that way. Then again, I'm itching for afterlife lore moreso than anything. (And it doesn't sound too much like RL to me....)

Death is but a doorway in this universe just as it is in many others. Ethernere is in a sense, an anteroom or vestibule to the realms of the afterlife. Norrathian, Trorsmangling, Cordanian, etc, all souls must pass through this dimension before going on or in some cases, returning. As with most dimensions, the gods have no influence here.

In the past, I have shared information about the little known realm of Ethernere. Here in this limbo, billions of souls can be found waiting to move onward. But there are forces native to Ethernere that have a life all their own, forces that may have existed or may have sprung from the lives that pass through here. These forces have come to claim the universal vestibule as theirs. Chief among these entities is the Harrowing Horde, the guardians of Deathtoll Bell Tower. These forces manage the existence around them and often have created laws that bind souls to the Ethernere for longer than any should be. We Norrathians will all see Ethernere in our time, but will we ever escape it? Most do, but some are held back by the forces of Ethernere.

Are the native forces of Ethernere the only obstruction that may keep a soul from passing on? No. There are powerful entities that can sometimes breach Ethernere and exist for long periods of time, unnoticed by the Harrowing Horde. These invaders come to the gray fields of Ethernere in search of notable individuals whose souls await their afterlife. Here is where such souls can be subjugated far more easily than within the realms of that afterlife.

The subjugation of souls in Ethernere can be performed in numerous ways. The reasons for such captivity vary. The Harrowing Horde has stopped such actions where souls have been used as such things as vaults of knowledge, spiritual batteries and in some cases simply to spite the soul from a glorious afterlife. There are many reasons for soul subjugation and not even the Harrowing Horde has seen them all. Pray to your gods that your time in Ethernere is brief and without complications.

The context of the message says Hounds of Ethernere, which leads me to believe is a certain faction of creatures, and not actually creatures from the Ethernere.

Wouldn't the Ethernere make for an interesting Expansion or AP? Or maybe just a one-shot Halloween event zone... If a player has a starting quest in their journal, they'll have the option to zone into the Ethernere on their respawn list the next time they suffer a death. Once there, you can join with others in the afterlife to take on some sort of nasty, soul-sucking beasties bent on the domination of limbo! They could use the arena champions framework to create characters with an alternate set of abilities for fighting and interacting in the afterlife. Maybe make it a timed zone...give people a slow burning meter that determines how long they can maintain their spiritual manifestation in this dimension before being thrust back into the world of the living? There are all sorts of neat things you could do with it. Problem is, it would seem kinda silly if you were able to bring any loot back. Maybe allow this alternate afterlife "champion" to persist in the Ethernere, so you can build up it's abilities on the other side. Once you get powerful enough there, THEN you can start having some abilities carry over to your living self. It could be a new way of doing the whole AA thing once we're maxed out with the current system and EoF worship system. I'd kinda like to play a character with "second sight" and abilities from beyond the grave... Or, I could just roll a necro...or a shadowknight...or a shaman...
