View Full Version : Are half-elves sterile?

Maybe the name fo the race should change from Half-Elf to Mutts, or Partial Elf.

It is possible for them to be sterile as mules and hinny's are. But ligers are fertile, so it is possible that half elves are, as well. Besides, Tunare and the Marr's could have done anything they wanted.

Antonia Bayle has a half-elf back in her lineage, so half-elves aren't sterile. In fact, that half-elf was the child of one of the Bayles and an elf, forget their names atm. There was a thread that discussed it awhile back somewhere on this board.

Message Edited by Salmastryon on 07-27-2006 11:18 AM

They arent sterile. In fact there's every indication that Half Elves breed with other Half Elves to the point of nearly becoming a race unto itself. Why else would they have a language? (though in my head, Ary'dal is a mix of human/elvish slang, much like the slanguage pirates of different nationalites used in the carribean.)
Ahh... so not every half-elf is the product of an elf and a human, but could be the product of two half-elves as well? Interesting. And confusing.

I know it is not eq 2 lore, but in the forgotten realms book series, the was a settling where half-elves lived and married other half elves.

In the Rogue's Hour , a novel on EQLive, there was a woman mentioned that "... had a faint hint of dark elf"

I wouldn't see why they wouldn't be able to have children any way.

What i would like to see is a half-elf/half barbarian mix.

my main, if i role play him, is a half human/ quarter wood elf/ quarter high elf

As far as genetics go, you cannot breed an elf and a human and expect a half elf to populate.. It is two diffrent species (well, I dont know how the elves came to being.. So I am going to say diffrent on the evolution chain). If you breed a lion and a tiger, a liger cannot breed with another lion, tiger, or another liger.

Funny you should mention the Liger, it was the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread. Yes a Liger (they do exist and that is the correct name for them) can sucessfully breed with a lion or a tiger. Its been done. They call a tiger / Liger half breed a Ti Liger (also heard them called a Ti Li). You can find the basic information about them at the Sierra Safari Zoo website. You can see some better pictures at Tiger-Animal-Actors. These are the folks who provide the tiger show for King Richards faire and such. Thats where I got to see a real Liger :smileyvery-happy:

The comparison to ligers and tigons isn't exactly right, since both animals are members of the genus Panthera. Presumably humans and elves (were they to really exist) would be more than simply different species, they would belong to different genera as well. In other words, I doubt that elves, given their nature, would be classified under the genus [Removed for Content], as humans, barbarians and erudites would be. In fact, elves might not even belong to the Animalia kingdom for that matter.

Half Elf is by far a politically incorrect name for them, since the odds of parent genetics being exactly 50-50 are very unlikely.

As far as I know, half-elves have never been sterile. In fact, according to the lore, by the time of EQ2 they breed true. (Presumably, at some point in the past, two half-elves who mated were likely to have children who were mostly human or elf, rather than half-elf. In EQ2 time, two half-elves are likely to have children who are themselves half-elves. Not that they're "half elven" per se, but that's the common name.)Powers &8^]
