View Full Version : Lore Of The Blade

There is alot of lore within EverQuest 2 that I find quite fascinating in its own right however sometimes the lore of the land overshadows other lore that exists within the game. Without a superb weapon some warriors could never acomplish the feets that they are able to acomplish, while on the other hand people would not be famous if the weapon was never forged.

Hopefully with this little thread we can bring light to the Lore Behind the Weapons of EverQuest itself from the superbly crafted and mystical Qeynos Claymore to the strange and unusual Sword of Thunder. There is only one weapon right now that has lore that really eludes me and that is the Wyrm Slayer Weapon you obtain upon completion of "A Thorn of Old" Heritage Quest.

Usually when I hear about a blade in Norrath that is steeped in lore, I think about the Ghoulbane:

This story is of Amstaf Trunolis, and his sword.

Long ago, in ages past, a man named Amstaf brought comfort and courage to all he met, and to those who knew him, he was a true friend. His tale was told by the friends who remembered him. Kanthuk Ogrebane first met Amstaf traveled with our hero throughout his life, and recalls the first battle they shared. Amstaf pulled Kanthuk off to the side before the battle ensued, bestowing upon his dwarven friend courage. After this, Kanthuk rarely left his side. Many does did they fight, and crusades did they wage. The blade Amstaf weild was like few others. The noble blade held the power to smite undead, sending their souls back to where they came from, in hopes that they might find rest. The last time Kanthuk saw his friend was a cold, snowy not, when Kanthuk almost lost his life to the frigid blizzards of the north. Amstaf saved the life of his friend, and that of his love, Ambreen, though what it cost him to do so, none can say. As Kanthuk lay half frozen in the snow, about to give up hope, he felt a tug on his cloak, as Amstaf hauled the dwarf to an old, abandoned cabin where he had a fire going. There, Amstaf layed his hand upon Kanthuk, restoring his life. Ambreen lie near the fire, her body cold, and near lifeless. Kanthuk slipped into sleep, but his rest was filled with dark images. He saw his friend, Amstaf with a dark figure at circled around the fire, watching Ambreen's body float above it, convulsing, as if life were being for brought back to it. Desperation worn on Amstaf's face, Kanthuk slipped in and out of consciousness. The last image he ever saw of his friend, was Amstaf going back out into the cold between two dark figures, a torch lighting there way....

The blade Amstaf carried was somehow broken over some years, and peiced together again by adventurers worthy to weild such a noble blade, the peices scattered across Norrath, kept by various goblins, ghouls, and undead.

It was also held by a Koada'Dal named Joren Nobleheart, who used it in the defense of Felwithe against the forces of darkness.

It was held by a froglok paladin who defended the ruins of Guk against the mighty hoards of undead that plagued his people.

For a time, the noble sword was held by the Knights of Thunder, and is rumored that a peice of it may still lay in the Tomb of their cursed order

And rumors tell that to this day, those who are worthy can once again restore the might Ghoulbane, and use it's holy power to drive back the neverending forces of undeath.

The Sword of Nobility

Restoring Ghoulbane

Ghoulbane

One weapon I am truely intrigued by and its past is the mighty Bone Blade Claymore which belonged to Gynok. I'm also quite curious as to how lore wise the Sword of Thunder can be Merged with the Bone Blade Claymore to form the Electrified Bone Blade Claymore.

It would be interesting to see more of these mergings being possible later on down the line. I would love to see a heritage quest unvail some hidden lore about the Screaming Mace and the Sceptre of Rahotep allowing the two to be made into 1 being called the Siren's Shrieking Mace. Having powers of both the Screaming Mace and the awakened powers of the Sceptre of Rahotep.

Alright, I suppose I might as well go with what I've found:

Five hundred years ago, the blade known as the Bone Bladed Claymore was weilded by a troll shadow knight whose name was lost to ages. Aside from the sword, he also held in his possession a key that unlocked a door that led one deeper into the ancient and mysterious dungeon that he lived in, along with a few other practitioners of the dark arts, shadow knights and necromancers alike. Now though very little is known about specifics, this is what captured MY interests as a scholar! all of the shadow knights and necromancers (well, the ones who were alive) were members of an ancient order known as the Burning Dead! Now there are legends surrounding the Burning Dead!

Founded and led by a necromancer who followed Solusek Ro, Marnek Jaull, the Burning Dead, legends say, ruled over much of Antonica for a while, but were constantly at odds with the Knights of Prexus, an order founded in Erudin by citizens loyal to the Oceanlord, who ultimately defeated the cult of the Burning Prince.

Before his death, however, Marnek Jaull is said to have supervised the construction of many magical weapons and items, as well as writing books on his findings within the realm of the arcane. Perhaps one of the most powerful of the artifacts he created was the one he valued most himself, the Staff of the Burning dead, but that is another story.

I have hear that Gynok Moltor, whose undead corpse was also in Befallen, has some connection with the Bone Bladed Claymore as well. In fact, I have heard that he was the first to weild the sword, and so I will share what I know of his tale.

When the first humans were traveling south from Halas, they traveled through Blackburrow. Upon their arrival, legends say, they were greated by a powerful gnoll shamanness, Opalla. As she extended her paw in friendship, the leader of the human expidition, Gynok Moltor, chopped it off. From that point on, a curse was on his blood, and every Moltor after him has been cursed.

Bone Bladed Claymore

Paw of Opalla

It is a dangerous journey running past goblins, tainted wolves, as well as mystical wisps you come across the stable there where you can "Register your name" *a travel thing in EQOA*. However passed Mid road are 2 ways that you can travel, 1 route is to HighKeep where many people gather on what I considered "Neutral Territory" where shadowknights could stand on ground with Paladins. HighKeep also had guards that were powerful enough to make sure you complied to the wishes of the ruler of Highkeep.

The second area is the one I speak of where the gnolls gather in two spots which are huge forts. Beyond that is what I believe to be "Black Burrow" where I have seen a powerful named creature "Opalla" reside.

Right, the problem with that, though, is that the first humans traveled south during the previous age, or so, so Opalla would probably be dead, in fact, the Gynok might have killed her, can't remember for certain (would have to go back and do the quest), and she would deffinately be dead by the time the Erudites came onto the scene, since she was alive back when the first humans arrived on the scene, and, as most scientists can tell you, the differentiation required to go from creatures such as barbarian, to human, to erudite (which are present in EQOA), would easily take a millenia, because of the lifespan of such creatures (100 year lifespan, give or take, that's what, maybe 40 generations? I know it sounds like a lot, but look how much the human race has changed (physically) in the past 1000 years). Depending on the personal beliefs of the scientist, could even take billions of years (but I think that's a bit much, don't you?).

Something else I found in my research, which I had forgotten to mention, check this out. Anyone remember the actual name of the Sword of Thunder?

Message Edited by Nocturnal Abyss on 06-02-2006 12:01 PM

Oh I know, I agree, totally, especially since it's a Sword of Thunder. But I still found it interesting.
