Log: Never before have I feared so much. They were so much smaller than the Red King, yet fought with a ferocity the King could not meet. There were four, and they fought with the power of a hundred. The Red King did not betray us. And our Mistress was by his side, honoring her pact. The Guardian of Flame rose again from the lava and struck down one of the small dragons and drove off the rest. The Red King lay wounded, and we are commanded to offer him aid. If he lives... then I believe our pact with his armies will be sealed forever more.

If im correct - these 3 whom Lord Nagafen sends us to destroy were the 3 that attacked him.

My question is what was the 4th ones name?

Ar'ticae, the Frost Maiden

Mjolni, the Bringer of Storms

Dythra, the Gloombringer

"The Guardian of Flame rose again from the lava and struck down one of the small dragons and drove off the rest." "One of the small dragons" is not Nagafen.

And the 4th, well Nagafen sends us to kill 4 drakotas, not just 3. The 4th just happens to be killed by the orcs, so we have to go to them to get the last ring required to access Darathar.
Message Edited by Pinski on 05-16-2006 12:08 PM

Ar'ticae, Dythra, and Mjolni are the three Drakota that attacked and killed Vox while she was in her lair, hence why they have her shards of Heart, Soul, and Spirit.

There were five Drakota sent to kill Nagafen soon after the above three left on their mission, these were Darathar's elite. Aurraxius led Kaljanar, Niscanith, Vanudozalon, and Trenda'loz in the attack on Nagafen. Without Najena's timely assistance they would have very likely succeeded in their mission, but as it turns out Najena's guardians greatly wounded Kaljanar and Nagafen was able to slay Aurraxius and rip his translocation ring from his neck. The remaining four, wounded and losing ground, fled to hidden places in order to recover.

The events of "To Speak as a Dragon", "Fire and Ice", and "Deception" play out from there.

It seems to be written by some type of military commander. You're not sure what army he commanded, nor which country he defended. He speaks of reagents you're unfamiliar with, too. It's possible this is just the work of a deranged bard.

Log: The fire giants are too many. We slaughter them, but not enough. We are suffering losses as well, which is not good. It is time to tell our mistress that the Red King's empire is growing too large. I will offer my head as the price of failure.

Log: Our good mistress is wise and merciful. I am still the Watcher of the Mauls, and my head remains upon my shoulders. She plans a different outcome that we are not to know. I neither agree nor disagree. The mistress has spoken.

Log: The ambassador has returned and still lives. There is never a time when our mistress has not ruled over us well. Did she not notice when we had awoken? Did she not give us the secrets of mastering the ether? We can only repay her for her kindness, and we are proud to do so.

Log: The Mauls met the giants today upon the Field of Fire. The battle was intense. For every fallen ogre, there lay next to it a fallen giant. It seemed as if both sides would fall together as one, were it not for the terrible magic of Mistress Najena. She appeared before us and raised from the very lava itself a victory we have never witnessed.

Log: The mistress does not need us. The Guardian was enough to decimate the armies of the Fire Giants. We can offer her no more loyalty than we already have. And this is what she will be given. The Red King has sent his ambassador to us, and we did not eviscerate him as we should have. Our mistress told us to expect him.

Log: We meet today upon the Field of Fire, our armies and the armies of the Red King. But we do not fight. We stare at each other, knowing that if our lords had not commanded us differently, we would all die in battle today. So we wait. We wait for our mistress to appear. And we wait for the Red King to return from icy netherlands. And we will wait until this has happened. We owe it to our mistress.

Log: Though he is our enemy, one must acknowledge his lordship. The Red King towers over all of his armies. But perhaps he does not understand that size does not dictate victory. For is not our mistress smaller than us, yet far more powerful? The King has taken the offer of truce, and now ogre and giant march side by side to our mistress' laboratory to enter negotiations.

Log: It is done. The Red King and our Mistress Najena have sealed an agreement. We will no longer embattle the giants, and they will no longer encroach. It was very difficult for us to allow the King's escort to leave our home unescorted, but this was her command. And we can offer her nothing less than to accede to her wishes.

Log: All are to arms! Every Maul is lining into formation. The Red King has betrayed us, for we heard his roar of defiance. The very walls of our home shook with the intense fury of his declaration. Our mistress cannot be found, so we must act on our own recognizance. The Red King will pay for betraying our mistress' kindness.

Log: Never before have I feared so much. They were so much smaller than the Red King, yet fought with a ferocity the King could not meet. There were four, and they fought with the power of a hundred. The Red King did not betray us.
I can see that, though it would be nice if there was an "offical" lore to cover this.. it does seem to be a large gap in what is some fairly major elements to the game.

or is it just a rewriting of history and we are to just accept that it has always been this way and that the Isle of ref is no way connected to the other two isles (other than being topographically identical)?

Any Developers want to chime in on this? Granted asking for a reply is almost the same as saying "I'll never be killed in this battle!" in a war film....... but still.

One of the biggest things that gave this feeling was the interaction with the ambassodors who would acknowledge their rival (that wasn't there) on the other side of the room. Since I was not in beta I don't know if it was that way in beta and changed during.

Anyway, so now you have the new way the game starts. I see nothing wrong with having a new vision and implementing it, but with the way launch charcters started and with IoR being tied in with the major storyline of the core game this was a very big oversight.

However, its hard to view them as three seperate islands when we only see IoR on the world map. So I do hope that development at least attempts to patch up the oversight to help maintain some background.

So then how does development fix this mess so that we all have something more smooth? Well one thing that should be done is update the world map to have an island trio where IoR is (should not be all that hard a fix) which would make the 'Norrathian Triangle' (dibs on name) much more believable.

Next you need to touch on the lore to show that IoR did exist in its original fashion prior to Drathar showing up. This could be done by putting a few "Far Sea Refugees" on the new islands that can give some lore about the IoR. You know give them a few joke quests such as finding the washed up cargo and/or mates on the beach. Helping them would encourage them to share how part of IoR's operations were to find people and prep them for the city life. They can then share about how while things were going good out of the blue Drathar attacked and wiped out nearly all of IoR inhabitants minus the few lucky ones that managed to get away.

This would also allow a tie in of Captain Vargos through the 'Far Seas Refugees' where they could explain that he used to be the person that found refugees out at sea and then took them to the cities. It also turned out that on the fateful day that Drathar attacked IoR and the fleeing ships Captain Vargos happend to be on a return trip to the island when he picked up most of the Far Seas people.

As for three islands well thats easy enough. No city would of course want another to have all of them let alone an independent such as the Far Seas Trading Company. Lore could easily explain that the Qeynos Island and the Freeport Island where always there, but at the time of IoR they had other purposes. It just happened that with the lose of IoR they retooled the use of the islands.

Having had a character at launch and prior to these changes the above for me(er them) makes a lot of sense in the series of events in Norrath and at least would come across as a lot more believable to current and future Norrathians.

Anyway, however you do it this quest line was a major story and its worth fixing the gaps made by your new vision.
