In trying to develop a bio for my new kerra, I decided to read up on their history. Then, I noticed what appeared to be a curious and subtle contradiction.

Female kerra are a bit larger than males, thus they have developed as a matriarchal culture. Kerra trace their ancestry back to their first great leader, Kejaan. He traveled the continent of Odus, uniting the various tribes into one kingdom and ushering in an era of peace and prosperity. One day, Erud and his High Men arrived to settle the continent. This splinter group of humans took over much kerra land; even worse, a great plague infected many and caused massive deaths. The kerra blamed the Heretics and their study of necromancy. Kejaan succumbed to the plague, leaving his son Vah Kerrath as leader. He vowed to make the Heretics pay.During the civil war between the Erudites and the Heretics, a huge explosion of mystical forces teleported an entire kerra village to the dark side of the moon of Luclin. Vah Kerrath survived this journey and renamed his lost tribe the Vah Shir. The kerra on Norrath scattered; some went west to settle Kerra Isle, others east to a tiny island in Erud's Crossing, and others fled deep into the Stonebrunt Mountains. Much later, a path to Luclin was breached and some of the Vah Shir returned to Kerra Isle, breeding a new, stronger people.

Now, I'm no lore buff... but if the kerra are a matriarchal culture, then why are their only mentionable leaders men?

Because what the history book doesn't mention is that the Kerra are only who they are now because the Vah Shir mated with the native Kerrans. The Vah Shir were a Patriarchal Society, while the Kerrans were Matriarchal (High Priestess Mitty rules over the Kerrans in EQLive).

The Kerrans gained the strengths and sizes of the Vah Shir, but kepts thier matriarchal culture.

You mean Patriarchal, right?

The Kerrans were always Matriarchal. The Vah Shir were always Patriarchal. Modern Day Kerrans are still Matriarchal, but have a lot of the Vah Shir's history to thank for existing.

Message Edited by Cusashorn on 04-10-200610:33 PM

Not sure why they only mention the male leaders, but you'll notice that Kejaan's son was who was sent to Luclin, hence the Vah Shir are patriarchal. Apparently after Vah Kerrath and his followers were blasted to the moon, the remaining kerra became Matriarchal. At least that is how I interpret it.

You might try looking for fishing records, thats probably where the fame and glory was on that island they lived on. Not much else to do there.

The Kerrans were mostly a matriarchal society. It just so happens that the only good leaders were male. :smileyvery-happy:All joking aside, I would say that the first line was added to EQ lore as a "neat thought" by SOE to get ladies to play as Kerrans and Vah Shir. Obviously the females are not larger than the males in EQ2....Take a gander at the beefcake Shieldsmith in Nettleville Hovel. Anyone want a piece o' that? I doubt it!

I think someone had pointed out in another post that those leaders were before the Vah Shir/Kerra split and it was after those detailed events above that the Kerra became matriarchal.edit: And doh, Toad-v above also said it. I think that best fits the situation.

Message Edited by Zhek on 04-14-2006 02:49 PM

Speaking with several NPCs there made that pretty clear. I'm not sure if they really were larger or not, but there were more powerful. Vah Shir however were run by males. I dunno what happened between EQL and EQ2 but the race has seen some pretty drastic changes. :p

Message Edited by Kamimura on 04-14-2006 10:00 PM

Aye, the Kerra were obviously run by females, and Vah Shir run by males. Just look at screenshots, half the women in Shar Vhal we're on pillows "entertaining" then males.
