They technically are not Valkyries being that Valkyries (in the Norse sense) don't have wings, but ride winged horses. There is however no doubt that they are inspired by them. I personally was hoping to see more lore related to them, but there isn't much to find.If you are interested in the character's mythological role this is the brief run down. You can also check out Norse Mythology for more info.
The Valkyries ("Choosers of the Slain" are beautiful young women, mounted upon winged horses and armed with helmets and spears. Odin needs many brave warriors for the oncoming battle of Ragnarok, and the Valkyries scout the battlefields to choose the bravest of those who have been slain. They escort these heroes, called the Einherjar to Valhalla, Odin's hall.
The Valkyries are also Odin's messengers and when they ride forth on their errands, their armor causes the strange flickering light that is called "Aurora Borealis" (Northern Lights).

Some of the Valyries are Brynhildr, Göll, Göndul, Gudr, Gunn, Herfjoturr, Hildr, Hladgunnr, Hlokk, Hrist, Sigrdrifa, Sigrún, and Svafa.

Yeah they're Valkyries, since Norse mythology has nothing to do with Everquest 2, EQ2's versions of valkyries are winged women warriors who live in the cold northlands of Everfrost.

Here's a bit on Norrath's winged maiden's:

There are numerous orders of valkyries, all honorable and paragons of the combat arts. A valkyrie is an honorable spirit of war. Most likely, the force that gives life to the Plane of War is also used to mold these superior combatants. They are lawful beings and highly organized. They are created as elite guardians and servants to the benevolent pantheons of the planes. Planar rumors also hint that some valkyries have been known to associate or have been created by deities of evil intentions. A valkyrie is bound to the duty appointed by its pantheon and will carry out this duty without emotion and to the death. The valkyries have sometimes been sent into the mortal realms as messengers or to seek out and test those combatants who have proven themselves legendary upon the terrestrial realms.

The valkyries found upon Norrath are an order named the Order of the Icen Blade. They are an ancient order of Valkyrie spirits who claim their origins upon the Icen Plains, a vast frozen tundra located on Qisalis, the Plane of Water. E’ci, the warrior goddess of ice and member of the Triumvirate of Water, is their matron goddess and it is from her that the valkyrie spirits claim to have gained their purpose. What this purpose is on Norrath has yet to be divulged. They descended upon Everfrost sometime during the end days of the Age of Turmoil, never revealed to the Norrathians. Within a towering spire of ice they hold their trials of combat. Great Northmen heroes where once called to the ice spire to be tested. These heroes were never heard from again. What happened to these heroes... no one knows.

Xalmat wrote:I thought the Plane of Water was the Reef of Coirnav?

It's been stated elsewhere and throughout canon lore that what we've seen as "Planes" are actually merely small portions of these massive areas of existance. Think of the size and scope of Norrath within the physical plane and you may begin to realize that what we've seen as the "Plane of Hate" or the "Plane of Fire" are likely merely small portions of the greater Planes at large.

"Mortals only ever saw the smallest bits of it. Like most things planar, what mortals could actually experience was merely one facet of the plane's true nature. Which, of course, begs the question as to whether the planes were real at all, or if they were merely facades projected into the minds of mortals so that they could at least conceive of their surroundings. Then again, were the planes projections of the gods, or were the gods projections of the planes? I once got into a rather fascinating discussion on the subject with a friend of mine as we took our morning flight..."

Right from the Kingdom of Sky lore itself. Personally I find that to be a bit lame when it comes to interpreting the planes, but I guess it applies all the same.

That statement right there would explain the drastic differences in the planes from the Champions of Norrath games on the PS2 though (which isn't canonically part of the EQ timeline btw.)

Vast snow fields and mountains in the Plane of Storms?

A giant wasteland of fire and lava in for the Plane of Hate?

etc etc.

That said, I dont' see why the three gods of water can't have thier own planes themselves, and have Cornaiv rule over a "General Plane of Water"...
