I noticed this in the Kingdom of Sky lore;

ABOMINATION - The abomination is a creature born of nightmare and grotesque experimentation by the Quellithulian erudites deep within the Halls of Fate. Escaped specimens can be found throughout the Overrealm and must be avoided by all but the most daring of adventurers.

I've seen things about this Quellithulian belief before, but it seems a strange basis for a religion.

Followers of Quellious the Tranquil seek peace. They are not strict pacifists, though, and will fight to defend themselves and their loved ones. The peace they seek is an inner one. They wish to know all there is to know about themselves and the world around them. They thirst for knowledge of their true selves and strive to help others attain enlightenment. It is through the sharing of this knowledge that they believe universal peace can be obtained. If every creature fully understood itself and its neighbors there would be no need for conflict and war. Followers of this peaceful child-goddess often follow a nomadic lifestyle, constantly seeking what there is to know and hoping to find themselves along the way.

Cazic-Thule. Followers of the Faceless, fear their Lord and believe that only by causing terror in others will they be spared his vengeful wrath. Fear rules their lives and through fear they rule the lives of others. Pain, misery, violence, torture, living sacrifice - these are the tools of a Cazicite. Many lizardman tribes are devout followers of Cazic-Thule, but his number of humanoid followers grows daily, a cold shadow slowly engulfing the bright spots of Norrath in a nightmare of horror and pain.

The History of the Erudites, a more Qeynos-centric source, says nothing about religion except that "And then first to one, and then to another, Quellious appeared in dreams, speaking of the cities of men." However a kerran in Freeport tells an interesting story...<snip>Then we have an intriguing book...

The Ulteran Spires
This book is filled with all sorts of arcane formulas and complex engineering blueprints. Some of the sketches bare a striking similarity to the ruined spires found throughout the Shattered Lands. Clearly only the most intellectual persons on Norrath could ever understand this, but there are a few pages that catch your attention.We the Minds of Quellithule offer these spires to all Norrathians. Many of the lesser minds of Mechanimagica and the Arcane Sciences believe our theories presented here to be faulty. This is impossible. We highmen have long applied the arcane art of teleportation. It has long been a standard within our societies. No other people have the heightened knowledge of such arts.Refining newfound arts of teleportation and displacement we have produced these new theories that will now be the basis for the new Ulteran Spire network of Norrath. This will replace the void that has existed since the dawn of the Age of War. The absence of the Combine Spires has made a large negative impact on foreign affairs, even between long allied nations.Since our reemergence and the bloodshed of the Age of War we have seen the value of harmony at all costs. If our nations are divided Norrath shall surely fail. We must maintain the bonds we have forged and strive to build new alliances. So we offer these new spires to Norrath and know that their existence will allow all civilized nations to work towards global harmony.

- Quell'Azar of the Minds of Quellithule.

So does anyone have any insight? What kind of belief could you get by combining peace and fear, anyway?

The kind of peace you get when everybody is too scared to fight, perhaps? Assuming you're right and the two religions have fused, of course. It's possible we have a new deity here...

The two main factions of Erudites (convieniently forgetting the Deepwater Knights or whatever they were called that worshipped Prexus. Now that I think of it, Prexus has really been kind of forgotten/written-out of EQ lore the last few years. Really no mention of him in PoP or the Tome of Destiny, at least that I can remember, but that's a whole other topic...), those that followed Quellious and practised the 3 accepted schools of magic, and those that followed Cazic-Thule and practised the forbidden art of necromancy came together after years of hate, resentment and bloodshed and put aside thier differences. Supposedely once the Erudites were reunited they started recieving visions and knowledge of a great change that they were capable of through thier combined knowledge and power. So, they built a temple to Quellious AND Cazic-Thule and all went in and started meditating/evoking/conjuring and when they came out they were changed.At least, that's how I remember the story. I always really liked the Erudites lore but never really played one in EQLive for long b/c I didn't like the model they used. I did however play an Erudite Necro in EQoA and really enjoyed the lore and story they were involved in back then. I must personally say I was shocked by the reunion of the Erudites, I never thought they would be able to put aside thier differences, but it seems that doing so enabled them to achieve thier transformation.

An interesting parallel considering the whole situation with Old Paineel and The Hole. Maybe this led to a doctrine of magical deterrence?As to new dieties, I think we should stop thinking about the god's direct intervention in the world and start considering religion as a social construct ... for example Freeport's Dismal Rage have shifted from a worship of specific gods to abstract concepts such as Fear, Hate, etc. Even in Godking Anuk's city beneath the sands we see no evidence of direct intervention by the Goddess of Undeath but instead worship of Her in absentia. In this way Norrath is becoming a lot more like real life...
