Never been in EQII's permafrost, but as far as I know the story is as follows:In EQ's ancient past, before the first Rallosian war, Everfrost and Permafrost were not the frozen lands we see now. Instead they were lush lands and the home region for much of the Giant race. The Giants held onto this area while waging their wars against the gods across Norrath. Then the battle in the Rathe Mountains occured, and the Curse was set loose against the Rallos races. The goblins were struck down so hard, extremely little remains of their original civilisation. The Ogres were stupified into what we saw in EQLive, only beginning to regain their intelligence soon after the Gods turned their backs to Norrath. And the Giants, the Giants were struck almost as hard as the Goblins. The main 'pulse' of the Curse struck Permafrost, removing all traces of intelligence from those giants and actually turning them into living ice. From there, the curse spread across Antonica (the original Antonica), hitting the Hill Giants in the Karanas and the remants of the army in Rathe mountains, the Fire giants in Lavastorm and the Sand Giants in the Desert of Ro. The curse deminished with distance however, but it was still potent; it stupified the rest of the giants on Antonica. Some of the Giant leaders tried to escape the curse, leaving in ships to cross the oceans, but Prexus raised huge storms. Some of them were blown across to Kunark, some were blown back to Antonica and a few made it to Velious to join the Kromzek and Kromriff already there.Kunark proved to be just in range of the curse, hitting the Forest and Mountain giants there, but not as hard as the Antonican giants.Velious however, was out of range (or perhaps they were shielded by Zek's Avatar of War), and the giants that lived there (Kromzek and Kromriff) escaped the curse unscathed. Hence how t hose giants could continue to be the threat to the Dragons and Coldain across the centuries, and how some of them were very intelligent wizards (Lord Bob and the Wizard Velk in his lab in [Removed for Content]) and with strong leadership lines (King Tormax and the royalty line in Kael). But back to the Permafrost giants, they were struck extremely dumb, turned into living ice. It is theorized that when Lady Vox was imprisoned in Permafrost, she extended her draconic will over those giants and bent them to her control to shape her lair. (Lord Naggy on the other hand apparantly struck deals wit hthe still-dumbed down Fire Giants for them to maintain and protect his lair, but they still have some shades of their former intelligence). Most of the above I've gathered from the Lore boards on EQLive where we were talking about the giant's curse a few weeks ago. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /><div></div>

The curse seems to be lifting some sorts.Permafrost today has more intelligent giants, as well as giants constructed purely of ice. Vox is dead, however her spirit still lingers and kills all those who dare pass thru her chamber. Nagafen is in the bottom of solusek's eye, and the giants are plenty in there as well if you can manage to get to the bowels of the dungeon. If you are interested about Nagafen and Vox, there is a very lengthy quest that tells a story of how Nagafen is trying to res his dragon-mate, Vox.<div></div>

Yeah, when hte Gods turned their backs to Norrath, the curse was lifted. It was most noticeable in the Ogres at first (I think some of EQII's lore stated as such, in EQLive we're seeing it as well with some of the events that occured during the war to reclaim Grobb from the Frogs)It makes sense that if the Ogre's curse was lifted, the Giant's curse is probably also lifting slowly now as well; especially if the Kromzek/Kromriff realized the curse was gone and saw some new opportunities. (Just curious, are there any Kromzek/Kromriff giants in Permafrost now? It would certainly make sense if there were)The Goblins in EQII also come across as more intelligent than EQLive's goblins; still not Mensa members, but smart enough to be more dangerous, or at least more troublesome. It's probably going to take longer for the curse to lift off them fully though. <div></div>

Thier curse is that they're lucky they survived extinction.</p>

<div></div>The giants in Permafrost have a secret origin not yet revealed. This secret rests in a mighty artifact that hangs within one of the chambers in Permafrost.

<div>From the first time I entered and explored Permafrost in EQ2 the layout of the zone struck me as remarkably similar to Icewell Keep (ThurgB) the castle and throne of the Coldain Kings. There was a large frozen river at the entrance which is now a chasm, 3 floors reached by spiral stairs on either end of the castle, throne room at the top in the middle and the basement where the tombs of the previous Dains were laid. It tickled my imagination that maybe the giants from Kael had at some point taken Thurgadin which later smashed into Everforst if Velious had broken up. Or maybe the layout is just uncanny in similarity. :smileytongue:</div>
