<DIV>I did not play EQ1, and have been thoroughly enjoying EQ2.  I'd like to have more background on the lore and the history that spilled over from EQ1 to EQ2, but am not sure what reoutable sites I should visit in order to get the information.  Would someone be kind enough to post some sites that might be worth investigating?  I'd really appreciate it.  <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV>

<DIV>The official EQ1 site used to be chock-full of lore....I haven't looked at it in a long time, though.  Maybe start there?</DIV>

<DIV>I tried to compile a list of decent EQ1 lore resources a few months ago in a post on my server board. Sadly I forgot to keep check on it and it got pushed clean off the boards by new posts... For example, anything mentioning Innoruuk as being creator and god of the Elves (including light elves) is beta lore! <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>With regard to the EQ1 site: yes, it used to have a good amount of lore there but most is gone (I think Google even has some of the links cached still, but they lead to dead pages now <img src="/smilies/9d71f0541cff0a302a0309c5079e8dee.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> ). Still, there's information there on the various races, classes, home cities, skills, etc., so should still be useful for someone who didn't play EQ1. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I'll see what I can find. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV>

This is the compendium of War, written by my Guild in EQlive before we quit, It is written from around the time of Luclin, before Planes of Power and before the storyline started getting fairly random and the history started to change. some of it is speculation but its a very good read.http://www.1stfistoflight.com/html/1fol/everquest/eqcodex/default.htm_______________________Egil Skalagrimson25 Paladin, Oasis

just want to be clear: compendium of war is fan FICTION....its not lore....interesting to read maybe but confusing to anyone not familiar with official lore

You can actually get a fair bit of lore from the days of EQ1 talking to different NPCs around EQ2. Like Boomba, just inside the gates of West Freeport. Talk about his ancestors who sold pickles there for the last 500 years ago. Well, in EQ1 there was an ogre just inside the gates of west freeport who sold a wide variety of pickles. Dwarf pickles,Halfling pickles, Froglok pickles, Elf pickles. Holly Windstalker was a (in)famous NPC in EQ1, wandering the Qeynos Hills and killing anyone she found beating up on the poor defensless woodland creatures. (like Rabid Grizzly Bears <img src="/smilies/69934afc394145350659cd7add244ca9.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />) There are others, there seems to be more "historian" NPCs like this in Qeynos, but that's only sensible, evils would be less likely to care, or tell you if they did. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />

<DIV>I have run into quite a few of these NPCs and have picked up on some of that lore.  I have talked to the pickle guy, but I didn't know that was reference to EQ1.  That's the sort of thing I'm looking for.  As someone who has not played EQ1, I feel kind-of like I'm missing out on some of this stuff and would just like to be able to appreciate all of the experience of EQ2.  As a result, I got a copy of EQ Platinum, and I think I'm just going to have to play both games and see what it's all about.  <img src="/smilies/283a16da79f3aa23fe1025c96295f04f.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV>

Another addict in the making! :smileyvery-happy:</P> <P>Don't expect EQ1 to be anything like EQ2, is my only warning. The races, history and some of the world concepts are the main links between the two games. Mechanics-wise, they're apples and oranges.</P> <P>As your interest was piqued mainly by the lore, here's my suggestion<EM> (this is the way I'd do it if I was starting all over!): </EM>ignore adventuring, questing and tradeskilling <STRONG>completely </STRONG>at first... seriously!</P> <P>Just make a bunch of level 1 characters of different races, starting in different cities, and run around the cities and newbie zones seeing sights (ignore the deaths!). <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> That alone will fill in a lot of the blanks you feel you're currently missing out on. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> Heck, even the character creation screen will give you a good idea of the races, classes and gods, plus good/evil alignments and historic racial home towns. Qeynos and Freeport should be interesting for you to check out (though much smaller than you're used to!). Other home cities will give you a good idea of places you may see later in EQ2, such as Rivervale.</P> <P><A href="http://www.eqatlas.com/" target=_blank>www.eqatlas.com</A> is essential viewing for your tours, by the way. <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> Oh... and be sure to look at the in-box world map compared to the EQ2 map -- it should help link all the names and places (from both games) together better. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></P>

<DIV>Another thing for exploring EQ1, focus your exploring toons as rogues, trust me on this.  I played a rogue for years and there was nothing better than invisin and running around exploring the world at extremly low levels.  The only things you gotta look out for are undead, otherwise get SoW cast on ya and safe travels!  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I'm about to end my account in EQ1 and say goodbye to old norrath, but before I do, i've been running around, getting screenshots of everything that had memories for me (most of my old screenshots were lost when my last Hard Drive fried).  Suprizingly my fondest memories of that game are my earliest.  When the game was so magical and mysterious, I spent days straight...literally just walking around zones, looking at everything, usually with eyes wide and mouth agape.  :smileyhappy:  Its kinda sad though, wandering through the zones that I grew up in...no one ever goes there anymore, most don't even know they exhist.  Like the otherday, a newbie was wandering where a good zone to go lvl so I told em Blackburrow, oasis, Loio, HHK, etc, he later replied that he had searched them, but they were always empty... sigh... o well gotta move on some time... :smileysad:</DIV>

<DIV>Thanks for all the suggestions!  <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />  What's the deal with the gods?  Is this something that we will perhaps encounter later on in EQ2?  Not sure why they would have left out that alignment in this game - was it not somewhat central to EQ?</DIV>

Well, one EQ1 expansion, Planes of Power, specifically, gave mortal players access to the realms of the gods. (well, the rest of the gods, there were a few you could get to before that) And, naturally, the "bosses" of these zones were the gods themselves. To progress through that expansion's storyline you had to kill 6? or was it 7, gods including Mithanal Marr, Rallos Zek, Solusek Ro, and the Rathe, and Karana. In other zones, God you could kill just for fun includes Tunare, Bristlebane, Cazic Thule, Innoruuk, and probably a few I'm forgetting.Naturally, this upset the pantheon a bit, and leading up to the Omens of War expansion, the gods descided that they were going to abandon Norrath to its own devices, leave their planes, and stop interfering with the events of the world. As such, the people of EQ2 are somewhat less faithful than the original, being almost 500 years without active dieties. APpparently some of the gods left avatars behind to tend to their intrests in the realm. The Avatar of Hate existed in EQ1 in the Temple of Cazzic Thule in the Feerot, so I imagine any other avatars would be similar to him. I'd imagine that at some point in the future of EQ2 the developers might use it as a plot device, the return of the gods. Add another hallmark quest to increase the max level of the game.

<DIV>Interesting.  I feel like such an incredible newb.  <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />  I sincerely hope that as EQ2 progresses, Sony does the same thing that it did with EQ and makes it as rich as what EQ sounds to be.  I still haven't patched my copy of EQ - can't seem to tear myself away from EQ2 long enough, but I really appreciate all the info you guys have been giving me.  I wish I'd have played EQ and then moved into EQ2 long ago, but ah, well, what can you do when you're ignorant to online gaming?  <img src="/smilies/69934afc394145350659cd7add244ca9.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV>

<DIV>If you're a roleplayer, you're actually at an advantage, not having played EQlive. Imagine, if you will, that you were born into the Shattered world, not having experienced what the characters from EQlive experienced.  No face-to-faces with Tunare, no duking it out with the Rathe. You're a simple person, ignorant of most of that. It's easier to roleplay a simple person who has no concept of that stuff if, well, in reality you don't know about it :smileywink:. As a veteran of EQlive, sometimes it's hard for me to RP my character as the young and inexperienced lass she is. As a player, I <STRONG>remember </STRONG>the day Galeth Veredeth came back to Faydark with the kidnapped-then-rescued Firiona Vie. I stood in the castle in Felwithe and listened to the king speak.  But my character has no idea about that stuff. </DIV> <DIV><BR>EQlive was a very rich world, and there is a lot of lore out there. Some people will freak out and say, "Ahhhh, half of those lore sites are just fan fic!" Yeah, there is some fanfic and beta lore being passed around as "canon", but there is some good stuff out there too. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Oh, as a sidenote, the Everquest Altas and the EQrpg books are TREMENDOUS sources of in-game, legit lore. I'd quote some of the stuff in them, but I don't want to get spanked for it. *winces away from Faarwolf* The Freeport book has TONS of stuff about the history of Freeport (did you know it was originally a dark elven city?!) and some of the surrounding areas, too. One thing that I like about that book is that it goes over the different factions in depth. It also gives some history on some of the more famous NPCs - Opal Darkbriar, Lucan D'Lere, etc. It's cool, and a worthy read.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Arana</DIV> <DIV>Wood Elven Warden</DIV>

There were some gods you couldn't kill, actually. Quellious springs to mind, his Plane being the Plane of Tranquility, a "safe" zone (no combat, period). I'm not even sure if he was actually in zone or not...Other you couldn't kill:Zebuxoruk, the "anti-god" a mortal who attained god-hood by believe strongly enough that the god weren't gods.Luclin, Goddess of Shadow, her avatar appeared in Vex Thal (an ancient semi-ruined city on the moon Luclin) for raid events but the goddess herself never showed up.Brell Serelis, as of OoW players did not have access to the Underfoot (his Plane) so no one had killed him.I believe Erolisi Marr had never been killed, also by virtue of her plane not beign accessible.Rodect Nife prime healer, never appeared, so never killed. And most of hte sub-dieties, Terris Thule, Vazaelle, etc.

The old gods that you could see in Classic EQ were:Innoruk, the God of Fear, meet him in the Plane of Fear off of the Feerott.Cazic Thule, the God of Hate, meet him by having a wizard port you up to the Plane of Hate. (Great zone for Clerics, Pally's, SK's and Necro's to hunt in)Bristlebane, the God of Mischief in the Plane of Mischief. Zone in from a castle deep in the Temple of Vasheen or at the end of the river in the Great Divide (both on the Velious continent)Tunare, the Goddess of Nature in the Plane of Growth. Zone in from a pedastal in the Wakening Lands on Velious. Then you have the gods that came from PoP:Terris Thule, the Goddess of Nightmare (and Cazic's daughter), you reach her from within the Plane of Nightmares.Bertoxilus, the God of Disease in the Crypt of Decay (off of the Plane of Disease)Saryn, the Goddess of Torture in the Plane of TormentThe Seventh Hammer. Not really a god but they were the ones the Barbarians followed. They ruled the Plane of Justice and metted out their rulings from there.Karana, the God of Storms. He was sleeping in the Bastion of Thunder off of the Plane of Storms.Mithanial Marr, the God of Valor. His household is in the Halls of Honour off of the Plane of Valor.Vallon Zek, Talon Zek: Rallos Zek's son's. They are in the Plane of Tactics but I can't remember what they reigned over.Rallos Zek, the God of War spends his time in the Plane of Tactics as well while he has his own Plane of War renovated (translation: The devers never got Plane of War to work properly so they moved Rallos to Tactics)Solusek Ro: The God of the Sun, he hangs out in his own tower near the Plane of Fire.Ferin Ro: The God of Fire. He is in the Plane of Fire.Xegony, the Goddess of Air in the Plane of Air.The Plane of Water is ruled over by a triumverant that handle the 3 aspects of Water: Povar handles water vapor/mist, Tarow handles liquid water and E'ci handles ice (they all have the last name Marr). Their domain is the Plane of Water but you only fight their combined creation Corinav. And the Plane of Earth is ruled over by the Rathe Council of 12.Then we see Quillious briefly who rules over the Plane of Tranquility and keeps people from fighting. There are many more gods and goddesses who are not in the game yet as well, such as the Goddess of Love, Ellorosi, and my own personal favorite the God of the Underfoot, Brell.(To see any of the gods howver you need at least L46. Most you have to fight, some you can just visit if you want. By the time you are that level you should have been around long enough to sort out what's what. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />Oh and Vasheen is the creator of the Dragons and the one who left the claw marks in Velious and probably the one who left the marks that form Dranik's Scar in the Realm of Discord as well. She's mostly gone away though, but you can meet some parts of her that remained in the Plane of Sky.I think I got them all now, at least all the ones that are in the classic game now. :>

<img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />

Also, the Triumverate of Water weren't named Marr, that was Mithanial and Erolisi, the Marr Twins (hench they only have the one temple & 1 pally guild in EQ1 Freeport)IIRC the main reason people get confused about the Hammers is that there were only 6 gods actually on the council, with the 7th Hammer as bailif, but the whole mess of them were called "The 7 Hammers" which is who the Barbarians worshiped in EQ1.

------Some of the Beta lore is very interesting but you have to have an idea which is beta lore and which is "official" lore, otherwise a lot of it doesn't fit or make sense. For example, anything mentioning Innoruuk as being creator and god of the Elves (including light elves) is beta lore-----Though this isn't official lore, it is an interesting way to explain the Dark elves' view of themselves. I have problems seeing a race thinking that their god tortured their ancestors to make them. It gives their enemies a preminent spot in Dark Elf mythology and I can't see Innorruk standing for it or the Dark Elves buying it. So from a RP point of view it is very interesting. Though not necessarally "official canon"Brannwyn

EQ1 changed. Lots. People will argue over things like access to the plane of Hate (which went through at least 3 variations that I can recall, one of which entirely replaced the zone), so it'll be very hard for you to get a canonical 'EQ1 Lore'. EQ2 maps most closely to the continent of 'Antonica' in Everquest 1, though, and thats the place to go poke about - just bear in mind even that continent altered. There used to be no Jaggedpine forest, nor Hole, nor Paineel, nor Stonebrunt mountains. Nobody has mentioned Gunthak here yet, the great forgotten expansion of Legends of the Ykesha <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> Even Holly used to have a partner. Holly was a ranger who would ,as stated, kill you if you were fighting an animal, even if the animal bit you first, but she used to have a druid partner called... Corun? I forget. Anyway, one day Innoruuk got fed up with the Tunare loving going on and drove the creatures of Qeynos nuts, and a bear ate him. No more Corun <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />I think too many newbies were being slaughtered by the Peta Pair <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />The original EQ's zenith were the dragons Lady Vox and Lord Nagafen - the gods were, at release, still inviolate. The planes didn't come till later, the first ones being Fear and Hate. The plane of Sky, Veeshans plane ,has no god in it as I recall.Visit Akanon zoo while you're in EQ <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> I always loved Akanon <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> The shadowknights guild in Neriak is very impressive too, as a building, deep underground. Fallen Guk is worth exploring to see the poor light side froggies fighting against the undead who've taken their city and are pushing them further back into the swamps. Oh. And see if you can find the Faerie village in the lesser Faydark, but careful of the Dragoons. For EQ1 'lore' though... there were even in game mythical 'greats' who were sometimes seen only in beta or GM events. Mayong Mistmoore, a vampire lord seeking to challenge the gods, the Kraken of rathe lake, and the constant conflict between Tunare and Innoruuk through their chosen pawns Lanys and Firiona. Man <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> I loved EQ up till Luclin. I liked it up till POP. Then it all went so wrong ;/ EQ1 had real character. I hope EQ2 grows it too <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> that overarching sense of purpose, dynamic politics and tensions. EQ stagnated, never really fulfilling its promise as an evolving world, but the backstory in that world was so so rich and interwoven it supported the game well for years.

<DIV>I totally agree with the OP, EQ1 was awesome pre-luclin, though thats where Verrant sold out to Sony.  From what I understand, Sony couldn't continue the kidnapped Fieona Vie story line (as well as the other story arcs already going on) because Verrant kept the creative rights to those story lines (either because they wanted too much extra for them, or they just refused to sell them, not exactly sure on that one).  So sony took a different approach and created Luclin, which if you think about it, it was rather smart because they couldn't do anything with what was in place really, so how do you build off of that?  You add zones, lore, and abilities, then start a new story line.  Which is exactly what they did, Paineel and the Hole were added to explain how the Kerran got to the moon (since they really wanted to add the kitty race) and they added more lore to explain the newly added spires with the combine empire.  There were huge complains about how hard it was to get from point A to point B unless you were or were friends with a druid or wizzy.  So the Nexus was added to make things easier (save for the 15 min waits inbetween teleports, though i guess that was better than the ship rides)...on that note, anyone else get pushed off of the ship in the Ocean of Tears or Timorus Deep as the ship was crossing the zone line (or you were dueling to pass time and got knocked off)...that was a loooooonnnnnnngggggg swim, I drount so many times..sigh.  Good times...anyways, sorry got off topic for a second there.  But yea, for a first attempt luclin wasn't bad, but it didn't really go anywhere or enhance any story lines really, as when PoP came out, they started a new story line, which they are still continuing today.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Also after spending quite a load of money to buy the rights to the game, what would be the best way to make some back?  Put out an expansion...ASAP, IMHO thats partially why luclin was so buggy (and still is in many areas) as well as why all of the story lines seemed hollow, rushed and only half done.  O'well, atleast PoP was fairly well done (once they got it working!).  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Just had another memory flash, anyone remember the old emotes in the old zones?  In the Karanas: Your eyes are getting dry", "the wind whips past you" or many of the old dungeons: "a foul stench is in the air", "Treasure beyond your wildest dreams awaits you, if you dare to continue", stuff like that...  I guess LDoN sort of reintoduced that but very poorly, they were long and overly descriptive, why suddenly spam a paragraph of text (causing some LDs) when a one liner will work?</DIV>

<DIV>"Also, the Triumverate of Water weren't named Marr"</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Actually one of them is.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>It is true that "marr" is the surname for mithanial marr god of valor and erolsi marr goddess of love.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>It is also the surname for Tarew Marr, elemental god of water, 1/3 of the triumverate of water and it's leader....who is also Erolsi and Mithanial's father.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Now because I'm feeling generous and bored, I'm going to give you a brief primer of lore of eq1, here goes (note these are by THEMES, not necessarily cronological):</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>THE CREATION</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Veeshan the mother of all dragons, was sailing through the void when she uncovered an undiscovered planet.  Being the first to discover it, she claimed it as her own, and created her children, the dragons of Norrath.  To mark the planet, she raked her claws across the southern continent, making huge cavernous gashes across it (note, veeshan is HUGE, her one claw was the size of a continent).  These claw marks became known as cobalt scar on velioust</DIV> <DIV>The other gods, discovering this, decided to add their own races to the world.  Brell added the dwarves, bristlebane the halflings and gnomes, tunare the elves, mithanial marr the frogloks and barbarians (who, as an aside, later united in one society under ruler antonious bayle the first and formed the human city of qeynos...barbarians are the same, genetically, as humans, but one group comes from a harsher, less civilized enviornment, where as humans are the offshoot of the barbarian tribes that settled qeynos originally).  Cazic Thule added the Tae Ew lizard men, and the shissar etc etc.  Thus was the world populated.  Not all gods created a race, but rather existed as higher powers, such as the elemental gods, who bound all of it together.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>THE TRIALS OF ELVES</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>The elven race (before splitting into wood elf/high elf) populated an area known as Takish'Haz in what would be in EQ2, an area of the commonlands.  Solusek ro, god of flame (and son of fennin ro, elemental god of fire), being and evil S.O.B., turned his power onto them, scorching their homeland, and turning Takish'Haz into a desert....known as the Desert of Ro on EQ1, an area that doesn't REALLY exist in EQ2 but, for continuality, is in the commonlands area.  In EQ1, with the release of the Lost Dungeons of Norrath expansion, you can actually explore areas of Takish'Haz, now over run by elementals, and derranged elves.  The elves mgrated to Faydwer, a continent east of freeport, where also the dwarves and gnomes lived, and settled into two areas, Kelithan, the tree city of the wood elves, and the city of the high elves, which I forget the name.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>To add insult to injury, Innorruk god of hate, to get a dig in on his enemy, tunare, goddess of nature, kidnapped the king and queen of the elves (her creation) and, over decades, tortured them, both physically, and mentally.  This warped both their bodies, and psychies, transforming them into a good nature loving race, into the tier'dal (dark elves), physically different than elves, and filled with the hateful rage of the god of hate.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>OF DRAGONS</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>When veeshan created her brood on velious (the icy southern continent), the dragons formed their own society in worship of her.  They settled in the city they made of skyshrine, and built and elaborate temple to her, the temple of veeshan (which for its time was a VERY high level zone).  The original dragons, the "first brood" were the most powerful of the society.  Zlandicar, Klandicar, Yelniak, Sontalak, Hsraga, and others.  Yelniak was their leader.  For a time, all was good in velious, until an event happened, so big, it deserves its own heading</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>OF KERAFYM AND THE WAR OF DRAGONS</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Dragons come in two types, red, and white.  It was decreed a white and red dragon should NEVER mate, as the offspring would be extreemly powerful, TOO powerful.....well, it happened.  A red and white dragon mated (it never states specifically who, at least in eq1) and produced their offspring, a dragon named kerafym, a great prismatic dragon of incredible power.   Well, kerafym KNEW he was strong, and basically launched a civil war against yelniak, spearheaded by Jaled'Dar, another dragon.  This war raged, Jaled'Dar and his armies (this is where I'm fuzzy, I'm NOT sure if Jaled'Dar and his cronies simply wanted Kerafym to lead them over Yelniak, or if they considered Kerafym their new god, over the original veeshan, I'm inclined to believe the second, and will stick with that), versus Yelniak and the followers of Veeshan.  THe war raged until Yelniak finally managed to capture Kerafym and imprison him, he was too powerful to kill.  He was kept in eternal sleep by four dragon warders, and imprisoned in a tomb, the door sealed by the essence of the powerful first brood dragons.  In FACT, to GET to the sleeper's tomb, you need to get a key, which is given by turning in a talisman that drops off the first brood dragons that existed in game, klandicar, zlandicar, sontalak, yelniak (or a shard of hsraga's talisman which we'll get to later).  On an aside, later on, zlandicar turned feral, feasting off the corpses of other dragons, and was banished to the dragon necropolis.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>As for Jaled'Dar and his followers who waged the war, they were banished off Velious, to the tropical continent of Kunark, and settled in an area they called veeshan's peak.  This is a good segue into kunark history, so lets go there, we'll return to velious later.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>OF THE SHISSAR, IKSAR, SARNAK, TRAKANON, AND THE SATHIRS</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>On Kunark, there existed a race of humanoid snake people, the bodies of giant snakes with forearms that walked upright on their tales, covered in scales.  They were an insidious race, powerful, and cruel.  They inslaved another race of the iksar (similar to shissar, but rather a lizard race, with legs, and a tail, also covered in scales), and studied necromancy and dark magics.  They grew so powerful that they began to challenge the gods themselves.  In punishment, cazic thule (at least it's believed to be him) sent the curse of the greenmist, a dense green fog that dissolved the scales, burned the lungs, and basically destroyed almost all the shissar.  Using the last of their great magic, the Shissar teleported themselves, the last that remained, along with some iksar slaves, off of Norrath on to the moon of Luclin (we'll go back to luclin later).</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>The iksar, now free, turned out to be no better than the shissar.  A great necromancer, Venril Sathir, united the various factioned iksar tribes (for the sake of completion, those tribes were: Kylong, Nathsar, Obulus, Jarsath and Kunzar, Venril was from the Kunzar tribe, the most powerful of the 5).   As Venril Sathir aged, he turned to necromancy to perserve his life, but the ritual was stopped prematurely by his sone Rile, and with the ritual only half complete, venril was turned into a mindless undead.  An amulet, containing Venril's soul (which was supposed to be returned back to the undead form, which is what rile screwed up) was spirited away to an underground dungeoun known as charasis, by venril's loyalists, charasis is also the tomb of venril's wife druzila</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Rile Sathir shied away from necromancy, and prefered the power of a strong military, constructing a huge army, and a powerful naval fleet.  This caught the attention of the dragons exiled to kunark (remember them?) and one of the greatest, trakanon, was sent to sink the fleet.  He conjured up a huge storm and sunk most of it, and went into direct battle with Rile himself on the king's ship.  Rile was killed, but Trakanon became mortally wounded.  He flew off to the abandoned city of Sebilis, and enslaved the local froglok population.  He used his dark magic to perserve his life, as a semi dead dragon.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>With Rile dead, HIS son Atrebe Sathir, resumes control, and like his grandfother Venril, turned to necromancy and dark arts.  He used his powers to create a warrior slave race, mixing dragon and iksar to create the sarnak.  Additionally he created a winged mount, the name of which I dont know, and created a giant arial army.  He turned this on the dragons of Veeshan's Peak, and just sparked a war that would decimate both sides.  The war ended in a giant arial battle over Cabalis the iksar capital.  Atrebe battled Jaled'Dar, and they killed each other.  The corpses of the dragons fell to the ground, covering the earth, and the area became known as the field of bone.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>With no clear leader, the iksar fell into civil war, plagued both by infighting, occassional dragon strikes, and a revolt of the sarnak.  Their vast empire crumbled, and they retreated to cabalis.  Now to return to velious in the story, but first I need to explain something</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>OF THE RALLOSIAN WARS</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Rallos zek, in the creation, created several races, orcs, goblins, ogres, and giants.  Deciding to seek supremacy, he led those armies into a vast war on the world, and the gods.  The gained so much power they almost breached the home of the gods themselves.  In retaliation, the gods cursed these races into ruin, the vast empires collapses into shells of their former selves, the ogre and giant empires collapses into fractions of what they were.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>OF THE OTHER EVENTS IN VELIOUS</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>With that said, one of the giant civilizations that remained was the frost giants of velious.  The giants and dragons waged a constant war, and the king of the giants slew Hsraga (remember her?) the bride of Yelniak (remember him?).  Her talisman was shattered, and pieces of it could be found on vairous raid targets in the giant city of Kael Drakkel  King Tormak, the son of the giant ruler who killed hsraga, used her skull as his throne.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Later in this, a dwarven expidition landed on velious...or rather was shipwrecked.  Stranded far from home, with no means back (dwarves have neither wizards nor druids in eq1, so teleport spells were impossible), they formed their own society, known as the coldain dwarves.  The dwarves and giants ended up in their own war.  So the climate of it was giants against dwarves and dragons, with the dwarves and dragons being more or less indifferent to each other.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>OF THE ERUDITES</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>In qeynos, there began a sect, started by a man named erud, who preached enlightenment and intellectual pursuits.  He led an exodus from qeynos across the ocean, and settled in an area he called erudin, and those that went with him called erudites.  Seeking intellectual pursuits and magic over brute strength, they were profound magic users.  But they factionalized, with some studying the "dark arts" of necromancy.  These heritics split off, and a civil war ensued.  The good erudites turned a weapon on them of intense magic energy.  The first attempt missed, hitting a civilization of cat people known as kerrans, the energy created a rift that transported them to the moon.  The second attempt hit, and blew a hole in the earth, a deep tunnel, which destroyed the original evil settlement (though they rebuilt on the edges of the hole).</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>OF THE COMBINE EMPIRE</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>During this turmoil, there rose the combine empire, an attempt to bring together all races in one, united empire.  This combine empire spred across the land, and caused a great era of peace, but it all fell.  The leader of the combine empire, a human bard named katta, made attempts to intigrate the dark elves into the empire, which aggrevated several in the empire.  Lord Seru, a high up "paladin" who was really a purist zealot, led an assassination attempt, katta was poisoned and fell into a deep coma. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Without him, the empire split into factions, the katta loyalists wanting a overarching free society, and the Seru loyalists, wanting the empire free of the "dark races".  Seru's followers won out, and the empire shattered.  A few of katta's followers, led by his wife Lucrecia, used a powerful force of magic to bring themselves to...you guest it, the moon.  And since we've talked about the moon, let's make it a catagory.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>OF LUCLIN AND THE OUTSIDERS.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Katta's followers expected to land on the surface, but some strange dark magic misdirected their transporter spells, and landed them instead in a deep cavern.  Moreover, they couldn't get BACK.  There they split.  Some decided to not leave, remain underground and find a way back to norrath.  Others fearing that Seru would be in hot persuit, struck out on their own to escape.  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>They were right, and Seru and his armies arrived, in the same place, and in the same situation.  Those armies also split.  Some remaining behind to try to get back, others striving out to seek out Katta and his loyalists.  Those that remained behind were initially wary of each other, working only for common good.  As the generations passed, and the lines faded, the two groups began to intermingle, and intermarry, and eventually all political differences were lost.  Eventually they gave up on the idea of returning, as they began to view their underground city on luclin as their real home.  Combined together, they named their city in the combine language as "a haven from the shadows", or, simply, shadowhaven, a zone in eq1 on luclin.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>The initial combine empire loyalists who fled ended up crossing the moon, and built their home in an area called the twighlight sea, calling it Katta Collosilum, a combination of a castle city, and a colloseum for the comatose Katta.  Those loyalists of Seru, along with their leader, formed Sanctus Seru, the Seru Sanctum, the two societies were openly hostle to each other for years, and in fact, in eq1, a series of quests given by Lucrecia ultimitly culminated in the killing of Lord Seru.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>The Katta who were blasted to the moon settled their own home, called Shar Val, and maintained peaceful relations with Shadowhaven.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>The Shissar were ALSO on the moon (review shissar history if you forgotten).  They build a great temple, and surround it in a powerful magic barrier, an artificial vacuum devoid of all air, so to avoid a resurgence of the green mist.  In eq1 the area outside the temple is called the Grey, and you can't breath in it..</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>But there was another, native race on Luclin, the Akheva, and they deserve their own section</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>OF THE AKHEVA</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>The native race of Luclin, formed by the goddess Luclin, goddess of shadows, humanoid creatures with 4 arms, they were skeptical of the first new races on Luclin (the kerran).  Their leader wanted to make peace with them, and in an effort to do so, urged her people to learn the common tounge language.  The akheva, a very xenophobic race, rejected this, and another akheva known as Aten Ha Ra lead a civil war (civil wars are common in eq history).  The initial akhevan leader was forced out of the akhevan home city (vex thal) and settled in an area that was caled in eq1, the akhevan ruins (not ruins then).</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Aten Ha Ra summoned a giant storm, shattering the outpost, and making it ruins.  The first rules staff, the key to the entry way, was shattered and the pieces thrown across the moon.  This storm ravaged the land, and created an area called the Maiden's Eye, a wasteland wrecked by the magic.  THe eq1 quest for the key to vex thal consisted of gathering the 10 shards of the staff, as well as the ornamental sphere on top of it, and reforming it with a great magic power (the great power was, in game terms, a planar rift, dropped by the leader of the shissar in ssra temple, who required his OWN key, which made the vex thal key the unholy [expletive ninja'd by Faarbot] of eq1).</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>How's this relate to EQ2?  Well, after the mortals breached the planes in The Planes of Power expansion of EQ1, the gods, upset with this, withdrew from the world entirely.  Rallos Zek once again led an invasion of his creatures, the orcs, and seiged freeport.  He was aided by solusek ro (god of flame, these two have worked together) in a seige of qeynos.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Lucan, a political entity, made a pact with the paladins of freeport to ward off the invasion, and, after the success, turned against the paladins, exiling/killing
