So, I just started a new Defiler. I am playing on a server I have not played on previously, so I don't have the luxury of increasing my ability through gear.  I am currently level 15 and am getting my [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] kicked by anything higher level than me, or any groups of mobs that are blue or higher. Do I suck? What is the deal?<div></div>

Defilers are incredibly slow soloers, even at 70 with raid gear / experiance, it still takes several minutes per heroic.Youre really best in groups unfortuntely, atleast until you can get your quest armor at level 20.<div></div>

I don't even bother to solo unless I'm doing a quest its not worth my time.<div></div>

<DIV>Defilers are not the best soloers at lower Lvs :smileysad:, they just lack the damage output to kill mobs. </DIV> <DIV>U would prolly get better XP finding a Scout duo partner or Group play</DIV>

if you have the time, you can kill mobs, but it takes a long time, pre-ward>fear>debuff>DoT>Ward>DoT= time sink to kill

Solo'ing is always painful that goodness my brother is a wizard.  I just ward him and he kills whatever it is.<div></div>

Ooo, this explains why there are so few Defilers.  I'm new to EQ2 (veteran of DAoC/Shadowbane/CoH/WoW - WoW raiding upto and including Naxx) and I chose a Defiler (on Mistmoore) because of the population, it seems I might want to hold off leveling him (or doing it bit by bit) until I make a group of friends. <img src="/smilies/9d71f0541cff0a302a0309c5079e8dee.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />  I do so love the concept.

<P>I believe that mystics are slow to level as well.  I am currently betraying from Qeynos to Freeport on an alt to become a defiler and it is definately a struggle.  </P> <P>I just hope that it will be worth it in the end because I am really looking forward to becoming a deflier!</P>

<P>I made the trip from Mystic to Defiler recently and have found that the Defiler seems to have less dps than the Mystic and a bit more trouble solo. Granted I'm only level 24 so things may be different at higher levels. Had to change to Defiler because all Wood Elfs are evil at heart.</P> <P> </P> <P> </P>

<div></div>You just need to lower your expectations and update your playstyle. I have done a fair amount of soloing - though certainly not as much as a fighter class.Heroic mobs are hard - period. I'm still trying to find out how low of a green heroic I can take without getting my butt kicked. However, you can take on blue/green non-heroics and even white in the right circumstances. You really need to manage (i.e. avoid) adds. Once you hit 20 and get the first AA point, you get a pet which adds a bit of dps (but dont let the pet get aggro or its dead). When taking on multiple mobs (green/blue), the thing I try to do is keep cycling through the mobs and keep dots going on them. This is quite different from fighter class where you tend to focus on one mob at a time and punch them down. With single mobs, of course, you just turn on auto-attack to beat on them and keep all your dots/debuffs up.I've also got two sets of gear. One set is str/agi/sta so this somewhat increases my melee dmg and my avoidance. This is my melee gear. I have a second set that has sta/wis/int and is for grouping and just being a priest. You can use a shield as a defiler - get one for soloing. Also make sure you have a decent 1h weapon. And lastly, I find that I have little trouble with health but tend to burn through power pretty good. So, I make sure that I have decent food and drink AND I buy a power regen totem. This will dramatically reduce your downtime between mobs and makes soloing smoother/quicker.<div></div>

<DIV>Scoop the master for the spell "defile" as fast as you can, when you hit that level, that IS your dps. =)  With that spell I can make the parse on a raid, timing of course. =)</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Defile - the closer the target is to death the more it hits for. </DIV> <DIV>(pure bue aoe dot on yourself effecting a radius - it's almost point blank)</DIV> <DIV>approx 98 per 10% close to dead for the targets near you</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>ok so potentially it's whatever your tank pulls - (up to 9) x 98ish  [i recommend a crit potion...]</DIV> <DIV>= 882ish per target per tick.... no including criticals</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>=) nasty</DIV>

<P>Levelling a new defiler isnt so bad. my wife just started one and she has like 15 aa's already and basically im putting them into the pet line to help with the extra dps a bit but also making sure theat all her spells are either mastered or adapt three. So yes it still slow but it can be done but obviously it will go alot faster if you dont have the mobs hitting you but another person.</P> <P> </P> <P>When I leveled my 70 defiler up I mainly duo'd with a bruiser or monk or shadowknight.</P>

I have soloed my defiler about 90% of the time all the way up to 45. I really don't think it's as bad as anyone makes it out to be. I quite enjoy it. I can take on yellow and even orange 1ups(^). I can take green and blue tripple up(^^^) heroics (all but the top two levels of blue), and I have no issues with groups of mobs or adds. Even in a fight with 3 double up blue/green heroics, I can take as many as two blue/white solo adds without ever risking death, though the end of that fight is gonna see me manaless and low on health (for once). The only thing I have any real problems taking are nameds, I can't seem to finish off even a bottom level green tripple up named, at least not the 3 or 4 times I have tried it, but it's been a while. It gets nothing but easier as you level, to me, as you get several new tools to add to your arsenal. The anti healer debuff, the extra DoT self buffs, the Shielding line, pet damage/buffs/debuffs, and the group DoT's all help alot.  Except in fights with 1ups or blue tripple ups, I don't even use my debuffs, just pull, HO, DoT, Ward, Shield (if I think the fight will last a while), and chain HO's until they drop, refreshing DoT's where and when it makes sense. I don't kill things nearly as fast as I do with my warlock, certainly, it probably takes me 3 or even 4x as long to do the same type of encounter, but I have yet to take a death that wasn't due to some intentional stupidity (usually impatience) on my part. The only time I find it painful is when fighting gruops of mobs that have more than one healer in them. You basically are forced to keep capping out damage until the healers run out of power and hope you have enough left to finish everything off before you run out. A couple times in Feerrott I got in fights with Lizards with 2 or even 3 shamans in the group and ended up meleeing the last 2 mobs (out of 4) to death. <div></div>

While the Defiler is a slow soloer, it is still an excellent soloer at higer levels. For example, at 53, I am currently soloing the Teachings of Yoru and opnly have 2 of those marks to go (the ones lower that 44). I soloed the 2 44^^^s and ended up with green hp and half powe, mainly on account of our steady flow of damage due to DoTs, and power regens (Maelstrom, Forced Canni), the later being the best due to the 0 power cost, and recast the same as duration. Just level up a bit more <img src="/smilies/283a16da79f3aa23fe1025c96295f04f.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> It gets better.<div></div>
