It pretty much sucks. The pet does seem to put out just enough damage to be useful when you soloing.... but you may also get sick of recasting it. :p

I find it useful when soloing. I find it helps to turn off the "protect" modes so that it doesn't attack unless you send it in -- then I wait to send it in until I have confirmed the aggro on myself so it doesn't get itself killed. It will still die occasionally, but much less often.

Pet must always always always (repeat) be in "NOT protecting you or himself" mode. You summon him, and you press the green "peace" symbol in the pet window. Make that an habit, and you will already find his survivability to be a notch better. It will never be able to tank, but it can add a steady powerfree DPS, as well as some nice abilities (4th in the STR line for example)

-Soloing, I usually pull with a debuff or 2, then turn on autoattack and send pet. If I keep a steady output of damage or wards, I am okay.

-In groups, I can usually send it after 2 seconds into the fray. Be sure to have it always attack the same target as the tank, even if he switches target. If unsure or when dealing with a tank that constantly changes target, do your best.

-In raids, the pet will die if you don't have the 5th STR Achievement, because very few raid mobs don't have at least a medium-strenght AoE. This we cannot do much about.

Spiritual Foresight DOES work for about 85% of the AEs I've encountered in game, as far as keeping the dog alive goes. In zones like Ascent of Awakening, Lyceum and Halls of Seeing, it's touch and go. If you want to take advantage of the pet related achievements, there really is no going around the STR line.I've been thinking a lot about achievements lately, though. I've grown weary of handling the pet, and all of the responsibilities that come along with using it. After a couple of respecs I've come to the conclusion that finding the right achievement path just sucks. The 5 path system is too restrictive, and the organization of skills is very poor. AA's from EQ1 and even the talent paths in WoW are a much more desirable system IMO. The branches are pretty well defined - you really feel like you can specialize in something, without wasting many points in filler skills or things you would never use. I really wish achievements would just get a total facelift and become something a little more flexible and "build"able.Sorry for the digressive rant, my thoughts on the pet really extend to the whole system.

I have two macros related to my pet:/usea Summon Spirit Companion/usea Spiritual Foresight/pet backoff/usea Aura of Warding/usea Auro of HasteI rarely have to re-summon him with the exception of some rare AE's that are somehow "direct".
