View Full Version : Mystics and uncommon (?) aggro

<DIV>I play a lvl 36 Mystic and lately am getting the feeling that I attract a lot of aggro for no apparent reason. Perhaps there is a reason that I have missed on these forums so I apologise if this has been covered elsewhere.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I'm aware of the problems caused by wards and to a lesser extent heals, but having experienced the ward attraction the hard way have learned how to utilise my abilities for maximum benefit (I hope).</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>However, recently I seem to be attracting aggro even when I am not in an encounter and have not fired of any spells whatsoever. At first I thought it was just my imagination but a couple of things have happened that make me wonder.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Example 1 - Running through the TS run of journey is half the fun quest with guildmate. He still has postal quest outstanding; I finished it a few levels ago. Naturally the leg biters spawn but they attack me, not him. OK, maybe I was just in their range but we had to rerun the timer and it happened again. Coincidence maybe.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Example 2 - Doing Training is a shield with guildmate. We are at Grozmag and he runs off to quickly update something on the bog/bootstrutters trail guide thing. Naturally the orcs at the encampment run after him, however one of them runs straight for me. I am well out of range, have not cast anything whatsoever so why me?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Perhaps these are all coincidental, however the above 2 examples are different guildmates, and both have commented on the amount of aggro I seem to attract. Granted some of it is my own fault (running straight into grimfeather anyone?) but I just dont see how example 2 in particular could have been anything that I had done.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Example 2 guildmate suggested I might have a buff that attracts aggro and was wondering if any Mystics out there are currently experincing anything similar?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>The buffs I tend to always have up are Ursine Oracle, Runic Shield, Omen and Spirit of the Rhino -all are Adept 1 or Master 1 or 2</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Any help or advice would be appreciated.</DIV>

Ahlia this is something many of have discussed, and most believe it is derived from the use of the Runic line (i.e. Runic Shield for you). It is a mitigation buff and has a ward attached to it also. I personally believe that there is something inherently wrong with the way aggro is working -- especially considering that many others say that mobs will come to them from across the zone, when they group members are not even close to having the buff. Others are rightly concerned that once your group is aware it can be managed, and that there are other issue more important that need to be dealt with. While some would suggest dropping the buff, I would never do that, no matter the amount of aggro --- of course this is depedent on your play style. <div></div>

<DIV> If i stand there at the begining of the fight and let the tank build up some hate I can ward , debuff away to my hearts content.</DIV> <DIV>If I cast a ward before the tank aggros I can watch out. So because I know this I dont do it.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>However certain mobs do seem to go straight for the healer. Classic example happens every single time is the priate ship part of sceptre of rohep (ancient desert power). Minute the tank pulls the mob goes straight for me even if I am standing at the back hands in pockets whistling trying not to attract attention.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Can only assume its one of my concentration buffs that I have up as mentioned above. The are all adpet 3 and thats all I can think of the getting me aggro. Never ever crosses my mind that something could be broken by SOE :smileywink:.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>If I am fighting a mob I never have for the first time I am always ready with threat reducing spell.</DIV>

<DIV>In German language forum same discussion is going on. Some Mystics carried out a test. They got aggro while they didn't do anything, no buffs on and no concentration used. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Me got killed couple of times while our heritage run through Zek was on. Although tank was leading the group I got aggro and spells from mobs. And due to the level difference 1 or 2 hits were enough to kill me. A pity 'cause another friend of mine -lvl 25 scout- didnt get aggro at all and finished the race (apart from the problem that he couldn't finish the quest due to his low level).</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>edit for adding information:</DIV> <DIV>this thread discusses same topic (seems they didnt find out the reason for sure): <A href="http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=19&message.id=9244" target=_blank>http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=19&message.id=9244</A></DIV> <DIV>I dont mind getting aggro and deal with it in a group. But I want to know what the reason is.</DIV><p>Message Edited by casacki on <span class=date_text>10-24-2005</span> <span class=time_text>02:40 PM</span>

Now that would be some data I'd like to see. If someone is getting aggro with no buffs running and casting no spells at all something is broken . . . badly. Runic Talisman is definitely still causing aggro. Other Priests also have this problem . . . sort of. You see, Runic has a small Ward against physical damage. This is nice, kinda. Other Priests also have a small Ward on their mitigation buff. However, the difference is that their Ward may be against some form of non-physical damage . . . Elemental, Noxious, Arcane . . . and thus it's far less likely for their Ward to "tick" right away or [Removed for Content] the mobs off.

<div></div>Last night while grouped with a 51 Defiler ...kept getting message saying "your ward regenerated 130 points of damage." I couldn't figure out where it was coming at first, and then noticed the similar spell Icon as Runic up. I asked him what was triggering the ward, and he said that he's been getting since at least the last week or so. And I similar message for a cleric spell as well. I wonder these spell lines are messed up, but we aren't seeing similar messages for spell lines. <div></div><p>Message Edited by thedump on <span class=date_text>10-24-2005</span> <span class=time_text>08:47 AM</span>

<DIV>This was happening (albeit to a lesser extent) before the combat changes. Used to happen to me in groups in Zek all the time. Never knew why. Occassionally would happen to other classes as well, notably a few of us had come to help a lower lvl guild paladin with something in Zek, we arrived first and had agroed some snakes after he zoned in and the snakes went tearing off towards him at the zone in for no apparent reason. Obviously he was too far to have done anything.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Bugged a multitude of times. Still happening. Game mechanic working as intended?</DIV>

There is some amount of aggro you get for being significantly lower than the group (or maybe its lower than the mob being fought). What is being described above is even more odd as there was a lower level person actively fighting the mob, the mystic was using no buffs and doing nothing and still got aggro. <div></div>

<P>Thank you all for your replies and input. I have tested the runic theory (and also found the ongoing thread - didnt notice it before, sorry).</P> <P>However, while doing Everling tonight I purposely cancelled Runic Shield before entering the instance, yet throughout the entire run I continued to be the first one mobs ran to. Not every time but I would say around 80% of the time they ran to me first.</P> <P>I don't know why this would still be the case, if it is in fact the runic line that is causing the problem. Luckily I was in a guild group who very quickly picked up on how to deal with the problem and the aggro was never a real difficulty. Also the pally almost always managed to pull any mobs away from me within them landing 1, sometimes 2 hits on me.</P> <P>If it is the runic that is "broken" then I am just curious as to why I still seemed to be having difficulties. I am not whining particularly as having it happen has taught me a lot about how best to work around it. <EM> </EM>I would just be interested in finding out more.</P>

That really is odd. Ive seen it happening when someone is much lower level than the rest, when prewarding, or using runic...but not without one of those things. If it happens again, try to get the classes and levels of everyone in the group, and any other information that you can: buffs, etc. There may very well be another aggro issue besides runic. It has been kind of odd how some folks are having ALOT of problems with runic, and others are having just a little. Maybe the folks with ALOT of problems are suffering from another aggro problem stacked onto the runic problem. <div></div>

There is something there. I don't know what it is. It's not insurmountable in a group. In fact, in a group that knows what's up, it's usually not even noticeable. However, when you raid, you will most certainly notice. I have zero problems in an experience group, none at all. I don't even notice the problem most of the time.

<P>I believe that our agro is not from our spell lines or our buffs at all but from the mobs a.i. changing. They have always been aware of what classes are attacking them as you can tell from the flavor text ( Random_orc_01 says, Get the priest!). Mobs seem to be a little more aware and are going for the more crucial classes.</P> <P>I watched this with my exp group the other night. When I was grouped with the others the mobs when proximity agroed (when the tank body pulls instead of casting an ability or using an arrow/taunt) all the mobs came to me first. When I was not in group they went after the conjurer. The group make up was Conj, Mystic, Bruiser, Assas, Monk. </P> <P>If the tank agroes the mob with an ability I have no problems with agroing at all.</P> <P>*Edit: Sorry found other thread after I posted this. Will post on that thread also.</P> <P>Saramina</P> <P>57 Mystic</P> <P>Nektulos</P><p>Message Edited by Saramina1 on <span class=date_text>10-25-2005</span> <span class=time_text>10:54 AM</span>

I have a lvl 25 Mystic on Splitpaw who doesn't have Runic shield yet and she still gets all the aggro. The mobs only have to touch another group member and then they all rush to beat up on my Mystic. This is without me casting any wards and with just buffs on. There is definetly a problem with Mystic aggro somewhere. <div></div>

Waht i found with Badger is that the aggro that was built up in the mobs does not go away just because the ward is turned off. I don't know how long it takes to go away (or if it does).

Hmmm...don't know what to say to that; however, I was grouped with a higher level Mystic in my guild and we were working on the prophet for the Rahotep scepter. When you clear the madman, you either get the prophet or a group of lunatics (or madmen). While I was grouped with him, I decided to drop number of group buffs because his were higher. Each time that group would pop...bam! they were on him like white on rice. <div></div>

<P>Im at the point where I am not usuing the Runic line when I group. Multi mobs in Nek Castle were all over my mystic the moment we picked up any kind of aggro and it resulted in one full group wipe and a death or two. The other mystic in our group was exactly the same level and wasn't getting any aggro cause they weren't usuing the Runic line. </P> <P>I joked with my group that my character was wearing a new perfume called 'L'eau D'Aggro'. Kind of sexy eh?</P>
