I wanted to take a couple minutes of your time to go over what "implied targeting" is and how it affects you. If you have a chance to share this with your group mates, please please please do so!When you target a PC or a friend and you cast a detrimental spell or attack; the computer will automatically assume that you mean to attack that PC's target. If you cast a beneficial spell the computer will automatically bestow the benefit on your current target. The reverse is true also. What this means is: Your main tank pulls a trio of Treants. You target your main tank and cast a heal spell and heal your main tank (logical) then, while you are still targeting your main tank you cast a debuff you debuff the Treants.Let me repeat: If you have your main tank targeted and cast a debuff it will automatically debuff HIS TARGET. Same if you click on attack, you will attack his target. If you target an opponent and cast a heal, you will heal that opponents target (presumably your MT). This works for all of the people in your group.So...If your main tank has the discipline to keep 1 target and the group has the discipline to only target the main tank...your party will not be breaking mezzes and your party will not be pulling random agro. Enchanters will love you, clerics will keep healing you.
Message Edited by TROrion on 12-20-2004 03:45 PM

Also, I have noticed that there can be a slight difference in the update rate for the direct target, and listings in the group window. So until that issue is resolved, it is wise to always target the main tank, as the target window will be more representative of the tanks health at any given time. This can be crucial in fights where the mob can do sudden large amounts of damage that requires direct heals.Just my observations...Gailin
I am fortunate to play with a small group of people who caught on to this function early and religiously target the MT. We have used this to systematically take down large groups (for us) with little fear of death and usually in short order. As a healer this make my job so much easier only having to really focus on one group member. BoV is easy to keep on one person and I know who to debuff and very little power is wasted. Overall this is the best change they have ade to the system in my opinion.

One further tip also is that if people insist they want to target the mob to see its HP (I actually often want to know the mob's HP to see how quickly it's dying and whether it's worthwhile doing certain debuffs, or it's dying too quick for that etc.), encourage them to make an assist macro (press O, click Macros, name a macro Assist and make the command text /assist, then drag the new icon to your hotbar), and only select the mob by first choosing the MT (F2~F6) then pressing the assist key. In turn they can then select the MT again by pressing the assist key. More important for healers is that if the mob has aggroed somebody else by choosing the MT and then assisting to get their mob, then assisting the mob to get its target you can constantly see if the mob is still hitting the MT, or if it switches aggro to someone else you will know about it early on and can throw a reactive or a direct heal etc. on them.

The worst thing that usually happens is someone wants to target the mob and they use tab or F8 to do it. Sometimes that works fine, but in places like crypt of betrayal, it usually means you're likely to have a Death Scarab attacked accidentally mid fight and add on the group, which can make things quite tough sometimes.

Message Edited by Kikmaidog on 12-22-2004 10:42 AM

Or they could just hover their cursor over the critter. Its life will show above its head without having to change targets.Gailin
