View Full Version : Are Templars completely incapable of improving their melee damage?

The only beef I have with being a Templar so far is my weapons skills. I have a pretty good 1h crushing weapon I got from a quest, but I only hit for like 10-20 at a fairly slow rate. My problem is that after buying some items that gave me +STR, the added STR didn't do anything to my melee damage at all. NONE. I took ALL my armor off so I was naked, and looked at my melee damage that my weapon says I can do. Next, I put all my armor back on so my STR buffs are added and the damage it says I can do with the weapon is still the exact same.So how does this stuff work? Are we stuck to whatever our base strength is? Is it only fighters who can use +str equipment to boost their melee skill?

<DIV>I THINK that strength damage is only added in during combat - not when you just examine your weapon.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>On the other hand, Sony wants all races to be able to be any class, and stats can get fairly high, so I'm thinking the extra damage from Str is pretty small.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

<DIV>If you're looking for melee damage, you're playing the wrong class.  Our melee attacks are just combat filler and our weapons simply a source of stats.  At least at my admittedly young level of 28.  Our offensive "power" and I quote power because it's not all that powerful hehe... is in casting single target dd and dot spells.  But, in a good group, you'll never cast those spells unless you have the power to spare.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>In all, you're a very good healer.  And while soloing, a pretty good nuker.  In groups though just stick to healing hehe or if you have power throw in a dot like combative faith.</DIV>

<DIV>It doesn't seem as though we Templars get an increase in dmg output melee wise, really, no.  I am level 30 and I do between 9-24 dmg (approx) with a feysteel morningstar.  I upgraded from the skullcrusher which I was getting about 7-19 dmg/hit from.  Oh well.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>-- Nyatar  </DIV>

<DIV>For what our melee damage adds you are, in my opinion, far better to just make sure you are paying attention to healing.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>However, if you feel meleeing is a must make sure that you attack from behind so as you do not get riposted :smileytongue:</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I myself have a much better time concentrating on calling out HO's and keeping the party apprised of what is going on then concetrating on melee.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>But to each their own :smileyhappy:</DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

<DIV>Weapon damage is near the bottom of my list for increasing but it would be nice.  We do so little damage 2-5 more makes a huge difference.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Also it seems with our high AC I run out of power when soloing and can still stand toe to toe with the mob and survive.  It sure would be nice to have some more damage so I don't have to slog it out forever bashing the mob with my puny stick.  Not that a puny mace would be any better.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I always seem to be choosing to throw a nuke to shorten the time and hope I can survive or be save and throw a heal.</DIV>

<DIV>I think, as people have said, that we are just not a damage class. We're there to keep people alive. If we cause too much damage were just going to get the attention of the mobs. We get enough with heals anyway, so why do we need more? In actual fact I often don't even fight during an encounter, at least not for the first 10 or so pulls. I like te guage how much damage the group is doing and how much healing I am having to do. I can usually work out in my head how often I am going to have to bestowal the main tank. If the healing is hard and I am fighting, then I am often having to break so much to cast that it isn't worth getting invloved. If there is a good amount of damage coming from the rest of the group then my damage is also insignificant anyway. I remember a time when I was getting so invloved with kicking a gnoll to pieces that a caster in the group had gotten the attention of another gnoll and was dieing....due to me getting so involved in the fight i nearly missed that and he nearly died. From then on I thought it better to keep back until I am sure whos going to need healing, and when.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Hope all that helps someone, Bryyn Holifeet (Antonia Bayle)</DIV>

<DIV>I tend to judge the group before running in too.  I am wondering what people are talking about when they say concentrating on melee though.  I just run behind the mob and start attacking.  I never pay any more attention after that unless I have a break without anything to do then sometimes I readjust my positon.  The only thing I have to worry about is stopping my atack after the mob is down so I don't cause an add.  Rarely there will be an add and I will get agro during the fight so I will stop attacking until the tank gets it under control.  </DIV>

<DIV>think yall are missing the point of the orginal post? I think everyone knows that Templars are not a DPS class but there must be a way to increase our damae output in some form. I do not know if or how much strengh adds to damage. I do know you can use posion to up your damage at the cost of coin. I have not seen many weapons that appear to be nice for damage, I am still using whatever has the highest wis health/power stats on it. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Soooo how to up damage?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Strength I am sure does up damage but probally not worth the sacrifice</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Posion works and is useful for solo'n them quest mobs while lfg</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Better weapons? I believe that the tree brance you get from the 20 quest is something like a 6-14 damage (im probally wrong here ) I have seen a few weapons one handers in the 5-9 or so range. Any one spot good dps (well dps for a non dps class <img src="/smilies/69934afc394145350659cd7add244ca9.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />) weapons? That weapon hitting for 50 a pop would be awesome. What is that one callled?</DIV>

Yeah I think people did miss the point some. I don't play the Templar as a warrior, and I don't focus on melee since I have no combat abilities. I just run up close and turn on auto attack once the monsters have been beaten by the others for a few second. I don't do much damage per hit, but by the end of a fight 200-500 damage or so could have come from my weapon depending on the length of the fight. I don't think theres anything wrong with looking to improve on that a little bit if its possible. If the situation is under control then I'll run in to fight and speed things up a little. Or sometimes running out of energy in a hard fight will require me to get in there to try to get the thing killed before somebody dies. Or for situations when I'm alone, I'd prefer not to melee for 5 damage. But what I was really curious about was if +STR buffs actually helps our melee ability at all. If it did then I might consider getting an item that had both STR and WIS to replace my item that was really just WIS. If it doesn't help then I won't take STR into consideration when buying or questing for an item. The ONLY time I ever have anything agro on me from a heal spell or anything else is when I do them right away at the beginning of the fight. Anything well into the fight and I won't have anything coming on me. When a tank is in trouble and Im out of energy for heals, the other melee in the group using all his taunts can't get the thing off the tank lots of times. It seems far easier in this game to avoid hate as a healer than EQ1.<p>Message Edited by LeadStation on <span class=date_text>12-13-2004</span> <span class=time_text>01:38 PM</span>

<DIV>I didn't realize we could use poison.  Is that correct or was he just giving a suggestion when he said poison would up dmg?</DIV>
