Noticed this a few times now, especially last night in SS (which is deadly to me at lvl 42). Me and my tank are swimming out to give the pirates a slap, too lazy to use invis so a shark attack. Pet pulls him off and starts fighting, so I tell him to start following again. We get to the shore and the shark has given up. Sick pet straigh on the pirates, kill them and then wait to heal up. I notice the pets hp is still going down and turn round - he's run back to have another go at the shark! This has happened a few times now - have they turned the pet into a Bruisa?

Hmm. yes I do recall that happening to me. The first time it happened it troubled me quite a bit but when I asked another necro friend of mine he mentioned that just cancel the pet and resummon him/her again to fix it. I haven't noticed that problem since (since lvl 3 so knock on wood lol.

Try resummoning and shouldn't happen hopefully.

Thats happened to my 37 necro rarely but on several occaisions in his young life..killing the offending mob works as well.

I wonder though, now I think of it, if there might have been a long term debuff, dot, etc that was still on the pet after we put it back on defend-itself? That might have put the mob on the pet's hate list?

Aye, but a 42 necro running around SS kinda needs to rely on his pet

Its a bug for sure whatever level you are, i get the same thing happen to me at 70, its even worse if u are about to fight a named, got into posistion, then your pets is dead and u have [Removed for Content] loads of mobs coming after to you, if you tell your pet to back off it shoud BACK OFF whats the point of being a necromancer, comander of the undead if we cant even control our own pets, plz for the love of god SOE screw these stupid probelms you really do seem proud to fix on live updates (easy not always the way) and for once fix those things that are more important to the players, But then again trying to get for once a simple answer from a dev that these pet problems are being looked at and then replying on this board is worse odds than winning the lottery

I have ran into something similar, but it was a "back off" issue. If you send your pet to attack something, before it engages you tell it to back off, and attack another mob. Once that other mob is dead, it will go back after the first mob. I dont think this is the same problem you described though. Also too, try running your pet in peace mode, see if that helps.

From what I remember of the mechanics of the this problem as explained to me by a Dev in beta was this:

I will use the OP as an example.

You and pet are swimming for the pirate island. Shark attacks and damages you. 2 things happen. You are on the sharks hate list, and the pet engages to protect you. You keep swimming, telling the pet to backoff. He disengages and returns to you. You get the broken encounter message when you both leave the water as the shark cannot pursue.

You engage the pirate, this reactivates the pet (and here is the important bit, its hate list). You and your pet stomp the pirate, the pet checks his hate list, remembers the shark and off he goes. 1 of 2 things causes this. The pets hate list was notr cleared correctly by the back off command (usually because it took more damage on the way back to you). The other possibilty is the shark hate list does not clear, it considers the encounter still active, which triggers the pet to protect.

I personally think its the former. The damage the pet takes on returning to you does not get cleared, only the damage up to the point you issue the backoff command. As soon as its hate list is reactivated away it goes. I checked my theory ages ago by doing the following. Ran past a mob, let it hit me, pet engages, then I backed the pet off and outran the encounter. I then told the protect me. No movement from the pet. Told it to protect itself. Off it went making a beeline towards its former target.

The only other proff I can offer of my theory is this. Get someone else to attack a mob. Send the pet, then back it off. Get out of range of the encounter and get the other person to disengage without killing the mob, Reactivate the pet (and its hate list) Nothing will happen. The pet has not taken any damage so no hate to the target mob.

As always this is just conjecture on my part but based on some information I was given long ago. The permanent solution. Dismiss the pet and summon another.

Sark.

if the shark had a dot on the pet when you " turned him back on" and recieved damage, he will go back to the shark.

Audabon wrote:

if the shark had a dot on the pet when you " turned him back on" and recieved damage, he will go back to the shark.

Can't have been that, the pirates were 4 lvls above me so was long old fight. Not likely to have been a DoT that long. Hate list issue sounds more likely. Thing is I haven't pld a conj since LU24 as I did betrayal straight after, but I don't remeber this happening before, and my conj was my first ever toon so I've put some hours in. Is it maybe a necro pet only issue or something they have done to the pet agro/hate since LU24?

I play both a Necro and a Conjuror and I've seen this on both of them. It is annoying, the worst I've had was in Feerrott as a conjuror. I would start to send my Tellurian Soldier in for a battle, decide at the last second not to and go after a group walking my way instead. My pet has not touched the old target as it's still standing there without a care in the world. After I defeat the group, immediately my pet runs back to old target and proceeds to attempt suicide. I barely kept him alive and got out of there. It's almost as if he remembers what targets I tell him to attack and just runs down the list without stopping. Maybe that's the way it's supposed to be but I found it odd since I never engaged the first mob.

To test go into an area full of grey mobs and tab, pet attack as fast as you can. You will be switching targets faster than your pet can get to them. However once you have cycled thru all mobs in the area sit back and watch as your pet runs from one mob after the next til he has killed every one you told it to attack. The pets have a good memory.
