Well, maybe they get the smaller shield as they level because it suits the more 'hardcore' battle style. So they are able have more advanced tactics in movement, and don't really need a big bulky shield anymore because now they can bob and weave.A bigger shield is prone to being handled less comfortably maybe? In that there are many places that physically a larger shield will breakdown and/or bend where as a smaller shield is a more focused point of impact which also works better with the better movement aspect.Ya know.. kinda like the kite/tower shield would be all bent up on the edges and warped and stress cracked but a small shield wouldn't.
