View Full Version : When does root actually work?

<DIV>Just curious about our root line.  I admit I don't use it for the usual kiting and soloing of Heroics and such.  Mostly I use it if I accidently draw aggro, or there is an add to a fight.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Anyway, none of our root line 'Chains of ...' ever work.  The stuns do, and the snare does but not the roots.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I know it breaks virtually on any dmg, and so I have to remember not to cast a DoT before and have it break the root after I cast that by some DoT 8s later.  Perhaps its some logical bug in pet defense (I get hit, its on protect me, I cast root right away, .5s later the pet hits the mob and breaks my root)</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Anyway I've made it to 47, and I literally got a root to cast and work probably like 5 times total.</DIV> <DIV><BR>What am I doing wrong? </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Does it only work on greens/blues or something?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

<DIV>I use root all the time, soloing and in groups. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>You get an unwanted add cast fear then root its like a ghetto mez.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Even in groups of heroic mobs you can take 2 mobs out of the fight right at the beginning just with root and fear.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I think your problem is coming from someone hitting the mob after you cast root on it.  Basically ANY dmg done is going to break the root. So just keep that pet backoff button handy.</DIV>

<DIV>root works great.  It is a bit more robust to damage than snare in my experience (although root is master 1 and snare is adept3).  On an add I usually cast fear followed by root.  The time it takes root to cast generally puts the feared mob a safe distance away.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>no pet, no dogs, no stench and root will stick and stay a long long time.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>GS</DIV>

Also, watch AoE's like Seism or AoE lifetap. They will break your root all the time.  I learned this the hard way. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />

Fear + root = 1 less mob to worry about. I use it religiously soloing and in group. I have Master 1 and it very rarely breaks before the full duration unless the group is beating on the mobs. And the 9 seconds of snared fear is good for recasting if you have timing issues.

Thx for the advice, fellow Necros. The more I think about it, it probably is my pet that is killing the roots. Like most others (I imagine) I always have my pet on "Defend me", and because I only really use root on adds or when I draw aggo (combined with the realtively lenghty cast time) pet probably targets and starts attacking the mob as I'm casting and breaks root shortly after. The fear and THEN root would help since if I can avoid that inital hit on my char, pet will stay where I want him.  (or at the very least I would know my pet had switched targes when he goes to chase down the 'fear-ed' mob. <div></div>

Another good use of root...If your pet can handle ^^ single mobs, then you can solo heroic encounters with 2 ^^ mobs.1. Root Mob A2. Put pet on Mob B, along with all of your dumbfire and DoTs... Keep pet healed but it doesn't need to be in great shape when the mob dies. When I do this, Mob A needs maybe 1 refresh on the root. But as long as you don't hit it with anything, you should be ok, and if you see if wanderin off reroot it before the fear part of your root wears off.3. Once you kill Mob B, root Mob A one more time. Hit your pet with your power regen spell, then dismiss it. Recall and buff your new one. Around this time your root will be wearing off from Mob A.4. Send in Pet, while casting Stun on Mob A. 90% of the time, the duration of stun will give your new pet time to get good agro on the mob. Follow up with Dumbfire pets, then DoTs, the nuke and heal as needed. With Warrior Pet at Adept 3 and Defensive stance Adept 3, this works for me vs white or lower groups unless I really do somthing dumb or get uncontrolled adds.

<P>Do yourself a favor.  Turn off "Protect me" on your pet.   Leave "protect yourself" on.  That way, when your pet is tanking 2 mobs, after one dies, he will "protect himself" and start on the next one. </P> <P>But with "Protect Me" off, you have more control over how to handle an add.   If you need to run, mobs will chase you a a LOT farther if you or pet have done any damage to them.  But if you never atk them, they give up fast.</P> <P>And of course, since your pet won't come along and hit the mob, your root/snare/fears will stick much better.</P> <P>You can always tell your pet to atk the mob afterwards if you want.  With "protect yourself" on and the pet's normal tendancy to grab agro from more than one mob in a group, you should only need to tell the pet to attack once per group of mobs -- the rest will usually hit the pet at least once so he will fight them.</P>

<P>Better your root lv the better it will land on mobs, I rarely have a resist when usint it even on named mobs ^^^ .</P> <P>BTW my ad3 root has 75pct chance to fear the mob when the root fades and he master I(gahh I want this bad !) is 100pct chance, yes 100pct, to fear the mob on termination of root .</P> <P>Some old master spells bellow lv 51 are still desaired for lv 60 ppl <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></P> <P> </P> <P>Allowen</P> <P>lv60 necromancer</P> <P>Mistmoore server.</P>

Also remember that the Defensive Stances include a lifedrain-on-being-hit part... so if you root and the enemy is close to your pet and hits the pet (not the pet hitting it) it gets damaged, and that already might break the root.

<div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div>Heh, wow someone took my sig and rededited it to put their name in it. (I know because I created it about 3 years ago for another forum). I'm flattered. Gotta love MST3k, I must own about 30 of their episodes that I downloaded from newsgroups or taped from the television. "Do you know what playing is Trumpy?" "Yes, it's where I break you in half." <div></div><p>Message Edited by Dniper on <span class=date_text>10-15-2005</span> <span class=time_text>11:41 PM</span>

<div></div>Naa, it doesn't bug me. I've made plenty of sigs and stuff for people I've known over the MMO years anway. It's cool to see other people liking my crap. Curious about the sig archive though if you remember where you saw it. PS sorry to hi-jack the thread a little. <div></div><p>Message Edited by Dniper on <span class=date_text>10-17-2005</span> <span class=time_text>12:13 AM</span>

Root works well on other summoner classes as well, rooting their pet takes away most the trouble associated with the caster. As others have mentioned, I only use root on groups, and usually only on duo groups.  The reason being that if it's 3+, by the time my pet agroes one, and I root the other, the third and fourth almost always beeline for me.   The only time I don't have to worry about that is when it' a blue or white enounter.  If it's yellow, forget doing a 3+ ^^ group.   Also I noticed the zombie pet doesn't group taunt, it seems like it's a single target taunt it uses, which is why it's so hard for him to pull agro sometimes.  I've yet to see him group taunt and pull all 3 mobs at once. <div></div>

<P>I had the same issue - my root simply didn't work.  I'm a Kerran with an almost negative amount of Intelligence, and I'm wondering if there's any correlation which sets us apart. (yes, I know - a Kerran necro ?? but they did advertise any race could be any class without negative impact)</P> <P>I think this was one of the reasons I had quit a while ago, not the defining one, but rather the proverbial straw...</P> <P>Anyway, with this latest patch I decided to come back after what I hope is a now stable environment as when it launched, it was rather the suck.  There was zero solo content, all classes we either broken or horribly unbalanced (hence the reason they couldn't have PvP as that unbalance would shine through like the light of God), groups had to essentially be perfectly balanced, most people were in debt 98 percent of the time, grouping with friends was impossible as the people who spent more time were penalized when they grouped with their less-than elite friends and the number one reason, it wasn't fun.</P> <P>Thanks in advance to those allowing me to rant, and hopefully I won't get too flamed by the others.</P> <P> </P> <P><signature not added due to a lack of import></P> <P>Message Edited by Gwidad on <SPAN class=date_text>10-18-2005</SPAN> <SPAN class=time_text>12:49 PM</SPAN></P><p>Message Edited by Gwidad on <span class=date_text>10-18-2005</span> <span class=time_text>12:49 PM</span>

<DIV>Ghetto mez (fear and root) has saved my static group several times.  At one point before LU13, Our Templar and myself were able to duo the splitpaw heroic arena using this on the opponents that came in groups.  works wonders</DIV>
