As of the Update on 9/20 we have to do at least 1 point of damage. There are some other threads discussing this patch:

http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=30&message.id=11047

http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=30&message.id=11057

You NEED to hit it with a spell or it won't award experience. You used to be able to just let your pet kill alone and get exp, but that was recently changed. But most blue/white mobs your pet couldn't take down on its own anyways, so that's not a concern in most cases, as your pet would die if you just "let it go".

That depends somewhat on your pets level: I have an adept III UA, and he can solo fairies and turtles in EL (they have V but he can get the normal ones also.) He ends up with about 30% health, and I cast one spell, but they are 2-4 levels above him.
