Currently I have a lvl 26 necro and I am very frustrated with the necro class., here are some points that I want fixed and I will give some ideas. -My tank pet has no taunt? I cast my pet buffs and I will gain agro way to fast as if my pet has no agro. If I have a tanking pet I want my pet to use a taunt skill. I want to be able to type in /pettaunt_on and /pettaunt_off. I want my pet to have GROUP AE taunts. I zoned into split paw, I was going through to get to the split paw den and I had to fight many group mobs. The problem? I send in my pet and he will fight the one mob while I am getting my butt handed to me by the other 3 NPC's. Why have a tank pet when he cant keep agro or gain agro? -My root spell does just about nothing for me. I can cast the spell and if it lands about 1/3 times and when it does, 80% of the time the spell breaks in about 1 second and is nearly worthless to me. Other times when it does work it lasts for a lil bit, maybe 5 seconds, as you can see this can be a really big problem when I am figintg 3 mobs at once while my pet is fighting another mob. My idea to fix this, make the roots stronger, make them land more and make them stronger against direct damage dots. These are what has been and continue to get me frustrated even after I gave my necro a 6 month break. -

I'm also a 26 necro and have no problem keepin groups on my pet. You just have to work a bit harder. Here is what I do:

1- Make sure you buff before you fight, buffing in the middle of a fight is just asking for aggro.

2-Target the closest mob of the group, click on pet attack and immediately target the next mob in the group, as soon as the pet hits the first mob have him attack the second mob. This should have at least 2 of the mobs on your pet.

3-Once the pet engages the first 2 mobs, make sure you are within 10 meters or so of him and cast Boon of the Lifeless. This increases the hate toward your pet by 15%, usually all the mobs will then turn on your pet, if they don't, immediately cast it again. This will be your equivalent of a group taunt for your pet.

3-Let your pet continue to build hate and slowly begin to assist him on his target, don't bother with aoe spells since you'll only aggro the other mobs.

4-Once you being throwing spells other mobs may still turn on you and you can either try to cast BoL a couple more times in the hopes they turn back on your pet or you can stun them and try to burn them down.

And just some other tidbits. Your stun is your best friend, not your root. The stun keeps them from doing anything for a few seconds, doesnt' seem to generate as much hate as the root, and seems to be far more reliable. Oh, and once it sticks, it's stuck. It doesn't really break. The only time I regularly use my root is on a pull. I'll target one mob, begin casting root, switch targets and have my pet attack then switch targets again. By this time the 1st mob is rooted, the 2nd mob is aggro'd on my pet and the 3rd mob is starting to charge me, I then have the pet attack the charging mob. Once he gets the attention of that mob I then have him attack the mob that is rooted. This allows him to gain aggro from all 3 mobs without any having made it to me and I then usually cast BoL on him just to bump up his hate.

Some mobs are tuffer then others too, and things go screwy but that's how ya do it. I do, however, wish our bindings worked just a little better. I'm not asking for wizard or warlock stregnth roots, cus that would be unbalanced, as we have pets. But just kick it up a notch, and that would do the trick.

-Vanir (49 Necromancer)

Message Edited by KaptanX on 07-15-2005 11:53 AM

Yah, I support more taunt for pets (see my seperate posting), but I can't support stronger roots. Stronger roots changes the dynamcis of fighting considerably as you can damage a mob with say DoTs without ever taking damage, completely negating melee. Or by sending the pet in for limited periods of time, then withdrawing him as he becomes damaged to heal, only to send him back in. I already use these tactics to a limited extent, but if roots were any stronger these tactics would become much more viable - and notice that success with these tactics has very little to do with how "tough" a mob is.

As for the tactic described above of switching all mobs onto the pet. I agree this works when you are fighting mobs that really can't hurt the pet, but can hurt you. But this tactic falls apart when the pet requires any sort of meaningful healing. Without AE taunt, the mobs will come running back to you in short time if you have to heal your pet. Well the poster may thank you for telling him about this tactic, I don't think we should consider this a complete substitute for pets getting some sort of AE taunt (in other words, this is still on my whish list, along with a much stronger taunt).
