View Full Version : Very disapointed

I don't make a habit of reading fan sites and online guides but I suppose that from now on I will. This simply takes the cake in how disapointed I've been in a MMOG product to date. :-/ My character finally reached level 20 tonight and obtained his class title of "Necromancer". I expected to finally - finally - be playing a necro class. I don't expect something straight out of EQ1, or anything like it for that matter, but I expect a necro class. I get a new pet and an illusion spell that does nothing practical, and that's it. You finally get to the class that you want to play and have worked so hard toward and you get NO class abilities except for a pet and an illussion? This is mind boggingly disapointing. At level 20 I still have to rely on old mage style spells. Apparently I have to wait until 29 to get a single class specific attack? What a let down - I'm at a loss of words to express how incredibly disapointed I am in this. In this product. In this company. In whomever is running this. I've known short sightedness and a lack of creativity in the years that I've been playing this style of game but it's been a long time since I've been this disapointed in a MMOG product. After all the pretty graphics and all the great voice acting, you get down to the actual game and this is what you're left with. What a joke. :-

It's disappointing. Don't feel bad though. Here's a list of class specific spells we get in the 20's.

Lvl 22) Blight - Single target DoT with an AoE nuke (I've seen it hit a single target 3 times in the first cast)

Lvl 23) Swarm of Rats - Summons a pack of rats to fight with you. Basically a dumb fire pet, use it on harder mobs. It has a long recast time.

Lvl 25) Grisly Mark - A power rot. The lvl 30 training upgrade has a proc'ing dot attached to it.

Lvl 29) Pest. Blast - A DD with disease damage. (I only use it to start HO's)

They're all class specific, these are just the offensive ones we get. The dot's won't be upgraded for quite a while. I still use all of the dots I have, including static pulse. Might as well when I have unlimited power.

the lack of imagination used in this game is rather disappointing especially the art work-whew its uninspired at best. you really have to mouse over another player just to see what class that player is thats just not the way it should be imo. soe used the old cookie cutter a lil to much in this one but, theres nothing available right now that i'd rather play although theres some good looking games on the way.

One of the difficulties of the 'net is it's hard to tell if someone's being sarcastic, or not. No offense intended but I don't know if the second response was intended with a sarcastic tone. My guess would be no but I find that I am often wrong. :p Although I wasn't a fan of the art style at first (most especially the hair, which is still horrible) I actually don't have any beefs with it. I think that on the surface they have a fairly good thing going. Decent visuals, decent music (no serious complaints from me at least), surprisingly well done voice acting. Though I received a proverbial punch in the gut from the game... due mostly because I didn't research the class progression or I'd not have given the game a secon chance ... I still don't to go around saying that nothing about it is good. It's unfortunately - in my view - the actual game that's terribly, terribly lacking. It's like building a house and you have the base and general skeleton of what's going to be an incredible place but then you slap a roof on it and call it finished. The classes themselves are so.. ... not there. :smileyindifferent: That sounds a bit odd I'm sure. It's like you start to play a Warrior but you're forced to use a bow for every one of your attacks. You're forced to do this for 20 levels, all the while receiving bow specific attacks. Then at 20, once your character finally achieves the title of Warrior, you receive a short sword and a chop attack but otherwise you're forced to continue relying on the bow and the bow specific attacks. You're not playing a warrior at all. You're playing a ranger, at best, that eventually gets a sword attack. The title of "Warrior", especially for those who wish to play that class, is rather a slap in the face (metaphorically speaking of course). That's exactly what happened here. My character, for 20 levels, is forced to rely on the attacks of a completely different class. Then at 20 he receives the class title but receives on pathetic little attack and otherwise must continue to rely on the weapons of the other class. As I suggested in my first post, I really don't know how anyone looked at this system and thought that it would be good, fun, or otherwise well received by a large majority of players. It is, as I previously mentioned, absurd. All in my opinion, of course, but I have quite a strong opinion on this subject. With all of the money, effort, and talent that was poured into EQ2 they somehow forgot the part that everyone plays. Oi. It's just one big puddle of "bleh". I won't be taking the character beyond level 20. Or any other character for that matter. I do not personally understand how someone can pay monthly for a system that forces them to wait such a long ammount of time "before the fun starts". Others obviously disagree with my point of view and, despite our strong disagreement on the subject, that's perfectly fine... well, mostly. I wish that others wouldn't tolerate it because it only makes developers continue doing it and it's bad for the whole industry but ... eh that's an entirely different soap box. What makes the whole thing worse is that they're working on their second expansion. This just shows me, as a consume, that they don't actually care about their existing product. If they did then they would darn well fix it instead of putting out new wedgets that plugs into the existing terribly broken base. Well, I suppose I could go on about it all but such is the way of the soap box. This is all my opinion, of course. A very strong opinion and one which would take quite a miracle of sorts to change. :p But still an opinion. If your view differs and you love the game, the class, and how the entire system works well, then, that's spiffy. I don't intend for my post to come across otherwise. ~Mysk edit: That was a really stupid typo. It's gone now. :p

Message Edited by Mysk on 05-31-2005 09:31 PM

I can see where you're coming from. Not every class has such a huge gap in "feeling" as the necromancer does. Eventually the necromancer starts feeling more like one. Best way to look at it is that when you make the choice to become something (archtype, class, subclass) is that you're at the beginning of your training to be what you picked. You start by picking the mage archetype and get some mage skills. When you pick you class (summoner in this case) you get your pet to start off with but you won't have learned much else yet..you're only starting to be a summoner, so you have to rely on your generic training as a mage to get by. Then when you specialize (ie choose your subclass) to necromancer, you get a necro-specific pet (which unfortunately is not very effective) but you still have a lot to learn about being a necromancer. Gradually as you get more and more experience you grow into a full-blown necromancer. Of course if you set out to be a necromancer from the point of creation and see the first 20 levels (which needn't take that long anyway) as an annoying obstacle, then when you reach 20 expecting to finally be a full necromancer will leave you desillusioned. I myself already started to feel more of a necromancer when I was about lvl 24 when I had my necro-tank pet, the rats and the Blight spell. But in the end noone can tell you how to feel about something.

So did you complain when you achieved 'summoner' and still had to rely on pathetic 'mage' spells? You JUST achieved necromancer. Don’t expect your epic and ability to raise the dead on a platter.

I can sort of understand where you are coming from though. There "could" be some things in there at the lower levels to spice up being a necro WITHOUT unbalancing the game.

Necro robes would be a top choice. Maybe your feelings of not being unique stem from "other" factors in the game that don’t make a class distinguished. Surely an undead pet rising from the ground to do your bidding was not enough.

Again, you JUST "claimed the title"....don't expect you've "earned" other things.

Read that previous paragraph again. Aside from the sarcasm you might consider those "other" factors that can and will make your game unique. ...No other class can truly LOL (Laugh out Loud)...we can in skelly form. heheheh. Meaningless to you apparently though. Try playing your class instead of playing your spell.

....Personally though I hoped to have feign death early on (for roleplaying purposes though). Oh well, not until T5....I haven’t "earned" the right for my get out of jail free card. I suppose I will have to do with all my power at 36th level as best I can until I get there. (and i've enjoyed every level since 20th~!)

Think about it...every level you earn a spell now is a CLASS spell. (well I think so anyway).

~Nomicon on Oasis

"Dead or Alive you're coming with me" !!

Message Edited by Snan on 06-01-2005 09:17 AM
