View Full Version : Air Pet Soloing

hello all im now 49 and i have never soloed with the air pet so i would like to know how its done. My airey stalker is adpet 3 along with most of my other spells and the stances are adpet 3 aswell

ive read other people saying that they do this kind of thing but having tried this my self i can not see it to be very viable as i cannot take heroic that are 3-4 lvls above me as some other conjurors have said they do i sturggle to take one that are 3-4 lvls bellow me with the air pet. some have said that they do this in offensive stance when i have tried this the pet dies very quickly indeed. i only have one stun harden adpet 3 and then there is quagmire to root this i find breaks alot. Are people lying about doing this i have fould that using the air pet to do down arrow or even con mobs works ok MOSTLEY but heroics are a differnet matter if there is a proven method for doing this pls let me know.

shattered earth! vehement stone<-dunno what it called earlier lvls. the air pet is also the best pet choice against that carpet 3 named mob which nukes for 20k of dmg, possible to solo(if u dont mind serval deahts ). sooo no, nobody s lying lvl 50 blazing precences, when its fixed again atm broken is a verry nice DPS boots.

There are a variety of different techniques. Choosing which to use depends to a certain extent upon your level and which spells you have. Another factor is the type of mob that you're going up against.

There are three basic techniques I'd say:

1) Fast Kill.

Key part here is choosing your content well. Essentially, you choose something that is easy enough to kill so that your air pet, with your help, can kill it so quickly that it hardly gets a chance to do damage. There's two major subdivisions:

i) solo grouped encounters (usually down arrow):

Here you're just firing off the pet at fairly low solo grouped encounters. The air pet kills them very quickly and so takes little damage. You're not usually involved too much in this type of battle. The goal is usually to gain fast, easy XP as you can rack up quite a bit of XP over time without really needing to think about it. This technique can often be used for other purposes though such as quickly clearing harvesting areas or for some quest steps.

ii) Green single Heroics:

This is more usually a 40+ air pet tactic. You really need Vehement Stone to absorb a few hits on the pet. The idea is that you'd send the pet in against a single green heroic. The absorb should take a couple of hits giving you some time to cast your Aqueous Hunters, then your stun and stifle should give you some time to cast pyrotechnics and a DoT - by which time the super-damage of the air pet takes down the mob pretty much. You maybe need to chuck a quick heal in toward the end.

This tactic works much better once you have Blazing Presence at level 50 which ups the air pet damage massively in a short burst. Depending upon length of fight and ability of the air pet to hold aggro, you might consider using Blazing Presence after your stifle/stun because it also hits reactively on taking damage.

2) Kiting / Root 'n Run:

The basic idea here is to take aggro yourself, while letting the air pet hit the mob but not get hit. In order to ensure that you don't get killed you hold the mobs at a distance with either your root or with the snare from root/Frigid Wind. If the mob catches up with you then you're likely to die. Both of these really only work with melee mobs. Any mobs with range attacks will give you great difficulty. You will also need a decent amount of space - somewhere to move back to that won't pull extra aggro from other mobs.

These techniques can be used against up to white ^^^ heroics at times. The space is difficult to find in many situations though and it doesn't work well against casting mobs unless you can take a good few hits. Root 'n Run tends to be very slow in terms of killing because you have to lose so much of your own DPS and there's more running than casting. The risks are also high because your root only needs to resist and you can be in some trouble. Frigid Wind kiting is less risky and faster - but you have to be level 55+ to get the spell.

i) Root 'n Run:

Use furthest distance possible to cast your swarm pets and then send in your air pet. Timing of these is something you learn. Swarm pets dying should get you aggro quickly enough and the mob should come after you with the air pet still hitting him. As soon as he is in range root him. Even if the root breaks immediately, the root will leave a ca 30% snare on the mob. You run away from the mob using his snare to keep him away while the air pet still hits him and you may throw in the odd nuke.

Sooner or later your air pet will take aggro and die. When this happens root the mob then recast and rebuff the pet and send him in. Run back to get the extra space again and keep going as before.

Your own casting is often limited in this technique. After the initial cast of swarm pets, you cannot really use swarm pets or DoTs during the root 'n run itself. The difficulty is that if the air pet goes down while one of them is still running, then you probably won't have time to cancel them before setting the root you'll need to hold in order to recast your pet. Some like to have a single DoT or Swarm running that they can cancel quickly enough to let the root stick... but it adds extra risk.

ii) Frigid Wind Kiting:

When you hit level 55 you get a DoT/Snare that snares for 75% and lasts for 45 seconds. This is pretty much the perfect kiting tool. This will work basically like Root 'n Run above, but because the snare is so great and is unbreakable, you lay down your full DPS as far as you can. So you'll cast then fall back, then cast and fall back, then cast and fallback - always staying out of the mobs range but still laying down damage.

This technique is the best one because you hold aggro well from an off stance air pet and the pet dies less. If the pet does die though, you can still cancel the DoT and root the mob to recast the pet. You'll find because of the size of the snare, you have plenty of time to cancel everything before rooting to recast the pet. N.B. Cancel the Firigid Wind last hehe.... Alternatively, you can just continue kiting without the pet, casting and moving back etc... the decision here is whether you have enough DPS to finish the job without the pet or whether you need the pet to do it.

3) Self-Tanking

Self-Tanking is an option for easy mobs. Pets have no mitigation other than your buffs and with the air pet in offensive stance he's not strong at all. At mid- to high-levels, the conjuror is often better able to stand up to some hits than the air pet in offense. Also, when doing grouped mobs in particular, the air pet will hold aggro very badly and you may find yourself taking aggro for the fight. The fight is usually over quickly though, so if you choose your content well you can stay standing while the pet is killing the mobs.

Essentially, you take aggro and lay down full DPS. Use your stifles, stuns and knockbacks as often as possible. If the pet takes aggro you do everything you can to take aggro back - which can include telling the pet to back-off for a second or two. The last thing you want is for the pet to go down.

If you're going to self-tank at all, you should grab some Resist buffing potions and some healing potions. You will also find cure potions useful other than cure arcane which you have as a spell of course. Basically, you're going to heal yourself and cure yourself with priority over everything else if necessary.

This is a classic Harclave tactic of course - but there is occasionally some other content that this works for. At lower levels you'll tend to be too weak to make a difference, but at higher levels your mitigation and resists can make it worth doing. Choosing the right content is key. It'll be when the pet is just not quite standing up well enough.

As others have said, the air pet isn't at his best right now. The last update seems to have dramatically dropped his damage. The missing 'on hit' procs are part of this but it also seems to be partly about the new abilities and the way the pet has been balanced. You should still be able to find mobs that are worth Air Pet soloing though and you should still be able to practice your techniques against easier mobs. The ability to choose which content is worth trying is a key thing to learn if you're wanting to do this a lot.

X

Message Edited by XtremSummons on 12-22-2005 02:08 AM

To the OP, when you hit 50 you will see a world of difference with aery since you will have Blazing Presence.

Soloing with Aery gets a lot easier at 50 with Blazing Presence (don't think I'd even bother without this spell), then again at 55 with Frigid Winds, and once you get Elemental Vestment at 58 you can pretty much cut through most anything.
