View Full Version : Pet Ranged Command

Since nobody else has mentioned I thought I'd let everyone know that the new pet commands did come through with the game update yesterday. After you charm your caster or ranged pets you can now do a <b>/pet ranged</b> command and it will stay back by you rather than rushing up to melee. I'm loving it so far. There may be a couple other new commands I don't know yet but that is the big one in my book. You will need to give the command each time you charm or recharm. <div></div>
unfortunately, it's not working for every pet I already tested.<div></div>

After using the /pet ranged command did you get a message stating the pet would attack from a distance? (Can't recall the exact message I'd receive but that was the point.) </div>
it just says that the pet don't accept to attack far from the mob or in melee. so just the default behaviour.<div></div>

I tested on two (I know not many) and they both worked great. You are charming a caster correct? 1) Charm pet that uses/has ranged2) /pet rangedmessage comes up "Your pet will keep it's distance and use ranged attacks"3) target mob and send pet to attack...pet stays in place using ranged spells (for the types I charmed)...you need to root, mez, or stun, the mob in order to keep it from rushing pet.Worked beautifully for me both with Servant of Mistmore in NT and Froglok Wizard in TT. </div>

<DIV>The greatest change to pets I've ever experienced. I however keep wanting to yo-yo, forcing my mouse finger down and just let that corpse candle fire like a cannon without limitation. Definately a fantastic change long since due.</DIV>

The only quirk I've found with it so far is that you have to be aware of line of sight issues for the pet. It seems that the pet basically takes your command to attack at range literally and will root itself on the spot regardless of whether it can see the mob. I had the frog wizard whip out his staff and act tough while standing there doing nothing until I figured out to back it off, move to a new position with LOS and then hit attack again. <div></div>

Very nice change though, had lots of fun with a coercer pet today.</div>

<P>It works but ... kinda of odd...</P> <P>First of all - pet must be in no selfdefense no master defense mode</P> <P>Second thing kinda funny - on a the no arrow up this command work perfect ... on heroic .... usually work but required sometime reissue command to asure that pet actually DO stay ranged... on named heroic? haha - no way pet WILL go in melee range (yestoday I intensively tested that within Bonemire)</P>

Excellent changes with the elevation fix and /pet ranged.

I've also noticed that sometimes the pet just "forgets" that you told it to stay ranged, and will run in to melee. Nothing happened that would seem to cause it, the thing just kind of forgot.<div></div>

<DIV>I've noticed on cloud trips in Bonemire that my candle would revert to the default "Melee" command without my prompting, requiring I re-issue the command at every landing. Not a huge issue but it should persist throughout the charm/summon duration of the pet.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I've found even with mobs that contain one long recast CA/Spell (percieved melee pets) that they will still stand at range and fire them whenever possible which is kind of nice even it if is a melee based pet.</DIV> <P><SPAN class=time_text></SPAN> </P><p>Message Edited by Kardgar on <span class=date_text>02-02-2007</span> <span class=time_text>02:31 PM</span>

Ah, maybe I took a cloud trip and that reset him. That's entirely possible.Really they just need to update the pet control window to reflect the changes, so you can see if your pet is set to ranged or not.<div></div>

It is also possible that the ranged/melee thing gets reset every time a pet checks to see if it can break charm.

I'm over here knocking on wood as other than the line of sight issue I've been fairly bug free. I've had the command stay up full charm duration. (Level 60 atm so using dominate). I've had defend me and defend self set with no probs. I've also had both of those off without troubles. They do stay put though so if I get an add the pet won't back away in order to be at ranged. I have to control the mob, back off pet, reposition, then attack again which will keep the pet at a distance. 3ups and single ups made no difference to me either. Too bad it's behaving buggy for lots of peeps. </div>

I just charmed a lamia in OoB and it worked perfectly.Heroic ^^^ mob.. yellow to me even. Typed /pet ranged and it started attacking with it's spells at range.. it actually kept up with the mob and moved around the room to stay at range too. The mob moved away from us and the lamia pet ran up and to the side keeping a specific distance away.. looked well out of range of AE's actually.Very nice ability.. now if they can only take off that uncharmable crap on most mobs in most instances now. Heard it was a bug being looked into tho, so I have hopes still.<div></div>

It was definitely casting pets. It might have been LoS possibly. Recast timer seems more likely it.<div></div>

<DIV>I made a /pet ranged and /pet melee macro and put em on an extra hotbar, it helps for quick changes when your needs/pet change a lot.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I've used this on both melee and caster pets and both worked fine.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I have noticed that if a pet in ranged mode is within melee distance of the target, he will still autoattack. I think of /pet ranged as a root command to the pet that tells him to stay put as long as he is within spell range of his target.</DIV>

I've noticed that the DPS generated with /pet ranged is significantly lower (eg. 60%) of /pet melee, even with mage pets. If your pet is a throwaway one for grinding XP, then /pet melee is more efficient. Of course for heroics, ranged pet attack is cowardly but safe.

If I have a healer pet charmed then I'm much less likely to use ranged as they often seem to have a smaller number of nukes plus they can heal themselves. If I have a wizard or pure caster I want ranged on every time. I normally try to find the best pet in an area and stick with it rather than constantly cycling through less effective pets. Should clarify that I'm referring to solo. In groups it shouldn't matter unless the best pets are few and far between and you don't have a chance to replace it easily...then I'd still use ranged. I think this command is more important for us as coercers than any of the other classes that use pets because we don't have the ability to just create a new one on the spot unless we are willing to possibly settle for a sub-par pet from whatever happens to be nearby.

<p>I absolutely love this command.</p><p>IT has its quirks, but it took away a lot of the micro management the coercers suffered from when pet soloing. Whee! </p><p>Lub!</p>
