View Full Version : Charm spell effects make my PC crawl

Hey everyone,

I have been playing eq2 since launch and have been having fun with my new coercer, however everytime I charm a mob the visual effects choke the heck out of my PC. The PC is decently decked out and I run in high performance and that is the only spell that chokes me up.

I tried to set the spell particles to extremly near so that the close effects wouldn't show in an attempt to disable the blinding and machine choking effect. Is there anything I can do to improve this without disabling all spell effects since this is the only one that chokes me.

Thanks.

Vodroc,

Thats strange. My box is hurtin' (3 years old or so...) and I have not known any class' spells being more brutal on my performance vs any other class... Now, do I suffer from a random suck-fest with everything going to Hades in a handbasket for no discernible reason? ummm... yeah.

It does this to me as well, but if I am in third person mode, the slowdown is much less noticeable. So, what I do is always make sure to scroll out as far as possible and not to scroll back in at all until the effect is completed.

I was wondering if that would help but didn't give it a chance last night. Amazing that I can go on raids with these graphic settings but if I charm a mob my computer chokes. I wonder if there isn't something amiss with the graphics.

For those who are curious about my machine, athlon 64 3200+, 1 gig gaming ram, 7600gt video card with 512 megs of ram, 2x sata 150 drives in a stripe so decently performing machine with the exception of this one effect.

I have a 3200+, 2GB RAM, x800XL Video Card and I can play solo/group comfortably on balanced but on raids i still drop it all the way to minimal.

My CPU does slow down a little when that spell effect is going off.

Another thing I hate is that the spell effect visual lasts too long. I've charmed something and started running and because I am blinded have almost ran into aggro mobs. Now, most times that I charm I am in a nice safe environment where there is just me and the mob I want to charm. However, sometimes when the mob I want is close to others, I want to charm and run to a safe spot before I get aggro. Can the effect be shortened, please?

Rythen

I think it's totally stupid the effect affects us that way anyway. It should "dazzle" the target should it not? But ya it needs to be toned way down and it shouldn't hit us at all, good post OP.

Message Edited by WasFycksir on 01-28-2007 02:31 PM

Well 3rd person perspective does allow me to play without being blinded and having my pc choke at all, amazingly I run perfectly smooth during the effect in 3rd person.

The problem with that though is personally I hate playing in 3rd person view and always have preferred first person perspective. Oh well I guess it's one of the downsides to a great class.

I prefer 1st person too. I think it stems from too much Doom/Quake/Tribes and flight sim games :smileyhappy:

Can't recall if this is default or a setting I changed but my camera is tied to the wheel on my mouse. I zoom in/out all the time as needed. Whether you like that control or something different you could probably just zoom out for charm, wait for effect to finish then back in to 1st person since it fits your playstyle. /shrug Something to consider if you aren't doing it already.

I like 3rd person cuz i look sweet when im fighting =p... i do look at myself in store windows when I walk by too... I wish I had 3rd person veiw all the time~~ =))

Scroll is default setup for going first to 3rd person view, and while that suggestion could work it doesn't help when I need to re-charm my pet mid fight because all hell just broke loose.

My coercer is only 18 so far so charm isn't quite all that reliable yet. Subj is getting close to max and at 20 I plan on crafting the ad3 to help keep them charmed.

/bump

This issue has not been updated in quite some time. This effect still brings my PC to it's knees, even though it has a 256MB video card. I did recently submit a petition, and the response was that it is a known issue... well, apparently over a year has gone by. When does a known issue become a fix?

A little tidbit from some testing things out with the game and two different computers that may shed a little light on the subject. First, my home computer has an AMD 64 3500+ with 2 gigs ram and a 7800gt 256 meg g-card. My work computer has an Intel Core2Duo E6400 with 1 gig of ram and a 7600gt 256 meg g-card.I set them both up at work and noticed that my work machine could run "high quality" graphics mode very smooth, even in town, near the broker. My home computer on balances got very laggy and I had to turn to "high performace" to get it to respond the same as my work computer. I found it odd and ran 3dmark06 to see where the differences were that affected this so much.My home computer with more ram and the better g-card scored a 3680 overall. The graphics tests actually scored much better than the work machine due to the 7800gt, so that made sense to me, then I compared the cpu test that it runs and there is where all the difference was. My 3500+ scored a 354 and the Core2Due scored right around 1980. My work machine scored an overall of about 5200 due to this one factor. This has led me to understand that Eq2 and several other games that are taughted as heavy gpu users, are actually more weighted towards the cpu. That's the only thing that makes sense in the results of the tests I did. Therefore, what I'm trying to say is that a 3200+ is on the low end today of what is needed to get the "Wow" factor in modern games. Also, I'm really surprised you report doing so well with 512 megs of ram. When we started playing Eq2, our comp choked with 512 megs. We ended up adding a gig stick to that. That comp is still doing ok, but I'm hoping to build new for both of us soon. Maybe one a Core2 and one a Phenom just to see which is really best...hehe.
