View Full Version : Yet another question about charming -- sorry
<DIV>A question about tactics: My understanding is that every time your pet takes damage, there is a percentage chance (say X) that the charm will break. Three questions: </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>1) Is this a cumulative effect and that as the pet is pummeled it's odds of breaking per hit increases, or does each time it takes damage (some factor greater than X), the same percentage check is made (always X)?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>2) Does the amout of damage per hit make any difference on the chances of breaking occuring, i.e, does X become larger if the amout of damage per hit is larger?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>3) What is the role of time on breaking at charm (other than the normal time for the spell to expire)? Clearly it has some effect since I have lost a charm while just staring at the sunset (or something equally ridiculous)?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>The reason I ask is that this has some effect on my tactics. After a fight, and my pet is in the yellow, should I just patiently wait for it to lick its wounds and be a PETA-kind of person until it is healthy and ready to rumble, knowing that it is the same chance regardless of a charm breaking independent of past actions. I usually time it so it is red, break charm, and kill my former pet. Exp is exp, whether it was a mob your pet was beating on, or if it was your former pet, you allowed to weaken.</P> <P>But as far as percentage breaking when it takes damage, from what I understand is it does it check to break the charm when it takes damage, and also does the same check every 30 sec. So yes, if your pet takes damage from mulitples, there is a greater chance it will drop, because it is rolling it's check many more times. But this is from what I have observed.</P>
Thanks. Like you mention, if the pet is in the orange or red, then I just go ahead and slaughter it, to the horror of pet lovers everywhere. I was just curious about what to do when the pet is not too banged up after a fight.

I had charmed an inquisitor pet earlier today and was chaining through mobs up and down the river in Loping Plains and the charm lasted 19.5 of the 20 minutes, breaking on the final 30 second check but never on all the damage that it took. It took some pretty big hits in there, so if higher dmg means greater break chance then I got very lucky. I've never noticed charm break just on big hits, so I don't think it works that way, though. It's part of what makes the class so exciting (playing a coercer is like juggling live hand grenades, after all. . . . ). When I "lost" my pet this morning the 1st time it was as we were running to a safe spot so that once the charm expired I could just mez and recharm. It just expired a bit earlier than I expected was all. . . . . I lost it 2 more times later, 1st time "just running around" a couple of minutes later, and later on in combat. Fortunately I had its target rooted and was targeting through my pet, so it was just a matter of mezzing it, re-charming it, then sic'ing it back on the target.</FONT></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>The reason I ask is that this has some effect on my tactics. A nice warden or inquisitor pet will tend to keep itself "perma-yellow" and so those I don't worry much about at all. If it happens to die. . oh well, but usually they tend to be more like a permanent pet. Scout or fighter pets, I just send in until they're ready to die too. They're all over the place, after all. But a good priest pet. . . those I like to keep around. Sometimes, if there's a good wizard pet, but they aren't readily available, I'll let it heal up between fights, but generally a lot of mobs of the same type are in the same area, so it's usually not too big a concern.</FONT></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Eclypso Darkfriend</DIV><BR> <HR> </BLOCKQUOTE><BR>
