Strange question. Does anyone solo without charm?

I love grouping with my coercer but don't like the tediousness at lvl 27 of charming recharming, set up, etc. I don't like pet classes but I love the dominating of others with my coercer. I like playing classes that help others but I have limited playtime and I don't really enjoy the healing dynamic on my 22 Inq or 18 Defiler, plus they solo very slowly. I actually enjoy soloing with my 20 troubadour the most but grouping its hands down my Coercer.

1. Is soloing without charm viable?

2. Are there any items that can ward me or increase my mitigation. (Part of my dislike is feeling like I am sooooo fragile and I die alot if I lose control)

3. This is my favorite class but I dread soloing with him an really have not had a lot of success getting into groups for some reason. When I solo I like to get a litte melee in, but I want to hang back and dominate in groups.

It's definitely viable - we can root and nuke, it's just very tedious as we can't benefit from our reactive damage (unless you want to tank) and our damage output without a pet is sub-par. We can even solo triple-ups without a pet; once again, it's just very, very, very much slower.Honestly, if you don't like Charm, but like the enchanter playstyle, and really want to solo; I'd recommend betrayal to Illusionist. With master charm and the right pet, the Coercer is the strongest soloing class in the game. But if you're not using charm, you're either playing like a watered down Illusionist (mez/stun/nukes but no pet and unused reactives instead of procs), or a watered down Wizard (roots and then "nuking" - and a sad sort of nuking that is), and you'd be better off playing one of those two.

Of course, you can play a charmless coercer in groups just fine, although the right charmed pet adds a huge amount to a group as well.

ugh, I think watching paint dry would be more fun than soloing without a pet, and take just about as long. You need to learn what pets are best to charm. Find master charm if possible or at least adept 3. Learn to use stuns you have more stuns than mez's... Coercer is the most powerful soloing classes IMO.

Understood. I feel "naked" when I enter a new area or dangerous one w/o a pet and hate having to get one to be viable. Its a mindset. I may feel that way because my charm is of such a short duration now and breaks a bit. Sometimes I don't want the tediousness of the coercer. I don't like being dependent on the pet to survive or solo but I understand about the dps. I can do wonders in a group (when i can get one) with a charmed pet and noone has regretted grouping with me. I am dps on wheels.

I keep coming back to my coercer because after playing him, every other class seems.......inferior. I compare situations with my troub, Inq, Def with what I would have done on my coercer. How I could have helped the groups more (btw I easily get groups with my healers), how i could have prevented the wipe, etc.

I really think its the lack of melee and tissue paper for armor.

A lot of times in groups I don't try to always have a pet, but use charm as a tool for tieing up mobs in the encounter group. If I don't want a left-over pet I try to pit it against something that will kill it about the same time my group is on the same enemy. I also tend to go pet-less until I spot a pet I really want to spend effort on, tho it's a bit tedious to explain why you don't have a pet and don't want one right this minute to group members, who basically see you as a permutation on a necromancer/conjuror. Once they understand that you can pick a pet to charm they want to be helpful by making sure you always have one. That said, I agree that if you don't like the amount of work it takes to play a coercer, your best option is to roll another kind of mage. It's sometimes surprising that a class you thought you would never like becomes your favorite. All of the classes are designed to be fun to play, but some fit better than others and are more satisfying depending on your gaming style. I don't know about others but I find playing my Coercer needs regular practice and I don't think I would enjoy her as a class for occasional play simply because there is so much that needs to be second nature. On days when I just don't want to spend the energy I pull out my necro and cast her tank pet.I notice you didn't mention SK. I recently rolled a pally despite much eye-rolling on the part of my husband. It's a great class for those who want to help the group in a wide variety of ways. I think a lot of the whining is due to the fact that folks roll one to get a free horse at level 20, thinking they will be a big MT knight. I you want melee abitity, nice armor and healing/wards/buffs and debuffs this class has all of that. Just make up your own mind and don't listen to anyone else.Every other class IS inferior... mwahahaha

Message Edited by Sonaht on 11-30-2006 07:59 AM

Message Edited by Sonaht on 11-30-2006 08:06 AM

yeah we CAN solo without a pet but its realy kinda pointless, takes forever and you lose half of our abilities, if you dont like having to recharm then get a lower level melee pet since they stay almost full duration every time and you can get the benefits of our reactives, really though it sounds like you would be happier with an illusionist though, they have the same crowd control for groups but solo they have a perma pet that just casts your abilities.

personally I find nothing more fun than charming a blue con caster and mowing down tons of other blues, or just for the challenge of it charming a yellow or OJ con caster and wiping the floor with even cons, sure there are lots of breaks and bad situations but it has made me pay more attention to crowd control which in turn makes me quicker and more sure to react in groups. Honestly we have a very high deaths to kills ratio but despite that I have gained more levels and much faster solo than I ever did with any of my other toons including my necro who died very rarely when solo on his way to the level cap. really enchanters are pet classes when solo, they have the option to go petless in groups and in fact are mostly better that way but solo they are pet reliant.

In some cases you *have* to solo without charm, mainly in instances that require you to progress by killing off the whole zone, the final mob being the most difficult. Well, I just use myself as a meatshield to set off the reactives, it works.

It's not as quick, but entirely possible.
