This question enters my head after seeing a post in the Combat Discusion forum section. A post from a Coercer stated that he basically never used charm at all when soloing.Do any of the Coercers here solo without ever using charm? Now I am not talking about groups, raids or PvP....just plain old soloing.I use a charmed mob 95% of the time when soloing, maybe 25% of the time in group and never in a raid situation. (Not that I have raided that much to begin with. lol)Charm is why I killed my lvl 26 Illusionist and started a Coercer.I am just wondering how many of us are out there that never use it all. I can see where a lvl 70 in raid guild may not have allot of use for charm but that is not the type of use I am talking about.SvenghaliLevel 52 Coercer

There are situations where I don't use charm while soloing. Inside lockout or fast-respawn instances when fighting some nameds, for example. If the fight has a chance to go south in a hurry, I don't want the added element of a chance to lose charm at a bad moment and lose a lot of work.In general, though, I almost always have a pet, even if it's just a useless autoattack pet, it's something over nothing.<div></div>

While soloing I will take a few encounters - typically after a charm has broken - and solo them sans charmed pet, just to keep from becoming dependent on my pet for survivability. If I've been grinding a while, it is very strange to start up a fight without sending the pet in first, but I believe the practice is worth it.  I'm sure it looks strange, to see a mage meleeing with his wand - and stranger still to see 300+ points of damage to the mob as my Syb gets triggered. Of course I only do this at the end of the fight, to set off the Syb that I cast out of habit. Rook-nuke, stun-nuke, stun-nuke - aww heck, lets move this along!<p>Message Edited by Nolomite on <span class=date_text>09-06-2006</span> <span class=time_text>01:58 PM</span>

Only time I don't have a pet charmed when I'm soloing is if I'm grey farming for quests. The pet will get aggro from mobs which wouldn't normally aggro me. Easier to kill them myself. If I'm soloing something green or higher, I always have a pet. <div></div>

I also do not keep a charmed pet if I'm sneaking around a zone invis. When--not if, when--the pet breaks charm, it will break invis. This only had to happen once at a really bad place to teach me the lesson.<div></div>

Yeah , I agree with all the above. I also don't always have a pet charmed at all times. The post I was reading seem to indicate that the Coercer who poseted NEVER used a pet while soloing and I was wondering if any other Coercers soloed this "never, ever use a pet" method.

<DIV>Ah, you mean <A href="http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=combat&message.id=113607" target=_blank>this little gem</A>?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Well, he said i his post a few things that could influence his attitude about charming:</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>1. He's only level 19, doesn't even have a decent charm yet.</DIV> <DIV>2. He admitted himself that he power leveled his character, so his skills suck... so charm probably breaks on him every minute and a half.</DIV> <DIV>3. He didn't mention anything about the quality level of charm other than adept 3 or master, but also didn't mention what kind of mobs he was charming. Granted, this wasn't the primary reason for the post (it was about roots), but if he's been using adept 3 charm on melee using pets, or charming a ^^^ and having it break on him... well that could definately cause issues as well.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>So yeah, in that situation, i could see how charm might not seem so hot. But that's entirely a problem with his character and playstyle, not the spell.</DIV>

I know I've sort of "adopted" a lil baby coercer on AB, who sends me cross server tells and lets me know about his progress and asks me questions and stuff. I remember him and I having a long talk about charm, and the merits, and I admitted to him that prior to lvl 20, finding a good pet was pretty rough. At 20 you could charm the spiders in Nek and they were good enough to complete the writs there (which I did for most of my exp through 25 when I started grouping more regularly and charming less often).</P> <P>He finally got a master level charm last night, and sent me a tell to tell me what a difference it made. Due to my tips on what mobs to use and his own observations, he was able to change his soloing and charming methods to work better for him. It definately gets better with age, as after level 60, I rarely grouped or soloed without a pet.</P>

<DIV>I always have  a pet charmed when soloing, I have Master lvl charm so the dps difference between me and just about any pet is quite a bit.</DIV>

I always charm for solo - sometimes anything thats lying around will do just to get the reactives off.....

Being that this is the first "pet" class I've played, I actually had a bit of a revelation yesterday while out leveling my harvesting skills. I grabbed a warlock orb in TS, and started sending it off to go attack some nearby mob while I harvested. As long as the mob does not aggro you, you can keep harvesting. The ability to get some small amount of exp while harvesting was nice, I think I'll be using that technique elsewhere.<div></div>
