I did conjuror since release day, and yes, it was great fun. I recently betrayed him to necro, but thats another story. I rolled a coercer because i enjoy the pet classes and coercer/illusionist was that from what id read. I did coercer because they have a lot more flexibility and a lot more options with their charm. need more dps? charm a warlock type mob and bam, you have a lot more dps. debuf? do a brigand type. The summoner classes are masters of their domain with the heals, and a dispensable pet, but i also enjoy coercer. I like the options i have with it.

As a coercer...

You will be asked to join groups for your regen and buffing abilities, as well as crowd control (not so much mez, but the stunning, stifling, etc). You will be asked to join raids (since LU24) for your regen, and your deaggro abilities, and the very rare occasion when mez or charm will work on epic encounters.

Soloing can work very, very well... however it takes a LOT of concentration and skill, and as high a charm as you can get. With the right pets, and chaining your stuns or roots, you can take down fairly strong creatures, very quickly.

As a conjuror...

You will be asked to join groups for your damage capabilities. For raids, you will be wanted for your mitigation group buff (once in a while), your ability to Call Hero, your damage capability, and to summon mana regen items for the raid. If you choose a necro instead, raid usage will switch to rezing, feign death to prevent wipes, and summoning mana regen items.

Soloing also works fairly well. Better than most. Compared to a coercer with the right pet? Not as good... however coercer's are highly dependant on what's around them, whereas the conjuror will have the same ability to solo no matter where they go.

So your choices are between high regen, crowd control, and a higher level of skill required, over more straight up damage.

Both have their uses, and are highly sought after on raids.

Raidi, Can you post the same solo, group and raid info for Wizards? I'm flipping back and forth between choosing Coercer or Wizard (both at level 10 so far). I was looking at Conjurer also. My worry with the Coercer is that DPS (Wizard, Conjurer, Scout etc) seems to normally be taken in groups over CC at early and mid levels (I have a 34 Brigand). Also, I would guess that any group would take 2 or 3 Wizards or Conjurers/Necros . But I doubt they would take 2 or 3 Coercers. I do want to be able to find groups easily without having to roll a healer or tank.

I've only ever run into the "we already have a coercer in our group" issue once.. in my entire gaming career. There just aren't that many of us, lol.

For wizards... I haven't had as much experience with them (i have a 50 warlock I can use for comparison sake), but this is how I see it...

For groups you'd be sought after for straight up DPS. For raids you'll be sought after for caster DPS (sometimes more or less needed than melee DPS). Solo play, not as good as either the conjuror or coercer. Only choice is to root and nuke. If things go wrong, at least the wizard can evac though (at higher levels).

Mostly, wizards are wanted for their DPS. The little utility they bring is overshadowed by other classes, so really you are damage, damage, damage.

The difference in play is basically if you don't mind slightly lesser soloing, and the straightforwardness of nuke, nuke, nuke, then wizard is a good choice. Hey.. someone has to play the class I put my deaggro on, lol. It's fun to see the big numbers roll by too.. there's that factor.

I don't know much about wizards, but I do know that with even just a decent pet, a well played coercer can do great damage as well. Like it was said before, Coercers are heavily dependant on what's around them. There are places where other classes won't even come close to touching you, and other places where you might even wonder if getting a pet is even worth the trouble (and it usually is). As to soloing, I don't know anyone that solos as well as my character. I was relegated to certain areas for long periods of time because that's where the pets were though. I spent the majority of my 62-70 just in Bonemire because the corpse candles/flames just tear through anything, so it wasn't that exciting. And as to having two coercers, don't worry about it, it's probably not going to happen much. Coercers are the least played characters in the game and I rarely even saw another coercer LFG in the same level range as me until I got to 70.To me the reason I love and hate my Coercer is that they are very, very situational. There are times when you'll think playing a Coercer is the greatest thing ever, and other times where you'll wanna quit groups just because you are basically a mana bot in the big scheme of things. If you can deal with that inconsistency then it might be the class for you.

Well I didn't think it was possible, but I was in HoF last night, and lost my pet just before getting to Katalkana, and had to turn into buff mode and go all out reactives for my only damage.

I pulled aggro.

Just to set the scene, we also had a wizard and ranger (granted I had my 23% hate reduction on them), and we had a tank that I've played with a lot, who's set up as raid tank and never has problems with holding aggro. I had my hate boost on him as well.

And yet, somehow my reactives did enough to pull aggro right near the end. I was keeping all three reactives up whenever possible, stacking both debuffs (waiting for the dot one to finish for the big hit and then recasting), the dot, stroke, ego.

I didn't even use Sonic, cuz I didn't want to get too close to his AoE.

Those reactives were doing 1500 a pop though, and I have no clue what the power -> damage spell was doing, so it might have been that. But honestly, that's the first time I've pulled damage aggro from that strong a group.

Earlier in the zone, I was using Infiltrators and Centurions and with them I was out parsing the wizard and ranger combined... although when they do their nukes, there's just not a lot left for the others to do damage. Makes that zone fly by, finished in an hour or so.

You know what's fun? Pulling that room with all the baby drakes, all at once, and let the Centurion do his aoe. Kills 75% in one shot and nearly kills the rest. Funny to see 200,000+ DPS on the parser, lol.

Message Edited by Raidi Sovin'faile on 07-03-2006 11:18 PM

Reading everything you guys write about the coercer and what you are capable of I am envious . I like to play the class but am of two minds because of the requirement to getting your master charm which is probably an impossible thing for me. I have a necro and it seems safer to play since an adept three pet is about all I will need.

However I cannot shake off the feeling that I will be missing out on one of the best experiences in this game if I do not play a coercer. Hence I am totally in a quandary. I can manage about one more toon. I cannot play the ranger, fury, bruiser and necromancer and coercer......I have to choose. The dirge I have decided to drop if I play a caster class as I am not having that much fun with the dirge as I am with this new coercer.

I suppose I will have to manage with adept IIIs until should all the stars allign and I get a charm master drop. I will not be cheated of playing this class because of my fear of the availability of masters so I am taking the plunge and playing it. I guess at least I know that if I find that masters are indeed so very important than I will cross that bridge when I come to it ..until then I shall try to play the class.

It is odd that after so many classes I have tried the one I thought I would never try is now making me want to play the game so bad. It has revitalized the game for me when I was losing interest.

Message Edited by aryel on 07-13-2006 08:47 PM

The only time it will hurt badly to not have a Master Charm, is soloing. In groups, 75-90% of what you bring is still effective without even using charm at all. Sometimes, it's not even worth it depending on the encounters. Raiding has limited charm usage, but even then it's not required to have a master, since it's used mainly as a form of crowd control... not DPS... and the Master will really only help in increasing the DPS.

The reason folks are so crazy over "must get a master!" is because we are all used to soloing, and soloing very well, with that master. To not have it means to not be able to solo the same things we could with it.

Coercer is about control... and when you solo, you are in total control, so it's the epitome of the theme of the class. Hence why it's "so important" to have a master 1 in it. Without it we'd have to give up some control and start grouping more. :smileywink:

However, unless you intend to solo for most of your playing time, you will not be too handicapped by not having a master charm. Grouping.. it'd be nice to have, but not the end of the world if you don't.
