View Full Version : Charm - can someone explain how it currently works?
In reading old posts, it seems that if charm breaks during a fight, the group get NO xp. Is that still true? I guess charm currently lasts 30seconds? Comments appreciated. Thanks, Mal <div></div>
<DIV> <DIV>Hey there. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Charming pets with "Beguile" (the spell name), lasts for 36 seconds. It doesn't effect epic targets, as the spell description states, but you can charm epic encounters as long as they are one ups (^) or single solos (no ^^ or ^^^) that come in groups... even though they are marked as epic encounters. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> However, usually in a raid, this is frowned upon as it will gain you serious aggro and usually you will die and cause the entire raid to lose the Clarity you have just cast on everyone. <img src="/smilies/69934afc394145350659cd7add244ca9.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Beguile hasn't broken any encounters for me, I use it a lot when I solo, especially when I have mass killing to do like on old grey mob quests. However, it obviously comes in handy for the most obvious reasons! If you are already pulling a group of 3 or more, then making a pet is no biggie... What I mean by grey mobs is when you "borrow" a solo mob around the area to attack another encounter, just keep in mind that after the charm wears off, that pet turns on you next. He doesn't just go away back to what he was doing before you borrowed him. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Currently there is no way to "refresh" the spell as of now during the encounter... so beware. I usually prefer to mez or stun rather than make something my pet, so that I don't have to worry about my current charmed pet and have to control it after the spell wears off, unless I am completely crowd controlled and ready to take on the "add" and deal with it after it turns back to normal aggro again.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>You can recast the spell every 8 seconds so you could make as many pets as you want... and you don't get several pet windows, just one pet window, so they all listen to the same commands. Again, just keep in mind that your pet will come right after YOU when the spell wears off, so beware not to make too many pets to save yourself some aggro if you are borrowing solo pets from a nearby area (not already in the encounter you are fighting in). <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Oh, as I said you can't re-cast the spell on the same target to refresh it. If you recast the spell while targetting your current pet, to refresh the spell, it will usually charm THEIR target, just as if you were casting through a tank assisting. So anything they are attacking for you, will also turn into your pet (if it's not a target like stated above ^^ or ^^^ targets since it won't work on them).</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>SO... even though you have the power to charm, becareful! lol... I have gotten into a few scary positions with all the mezzing and pet making going on. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> Mez wears off, this guy comes after me, pet spell wears off, that guy comes after me... trying to keep the other one stunned while re-mezzing... ugh it can get messy. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> BUT FUN!</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>On a side note, I'd really love this spell a lot more and find it much more useful to us Coercers, if the pet lasted a little longer than 36 seconds. I would think a whole minute would be sufficient... if not more! That way we don't have to worry about that aggro coming back on us so fast... after all, we aren't DPS characters that can wipe everything out in 36 seconds, so by the time the pet turns on us, we are usually in trouble anyway (if everything has not gone so smoothly or something doesn't land). <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Good luck and use the force wisely, Luke! <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /><BR>Ecise, level 50 High Elf Coercer, Najena</DIV></DIV>
Julzy, Thanks very much for the reply. So the "broken" encounter I guess is when a pet charm breaks while attacking another mob/group of mobs, and the result is no loot (and maybe no xp)? Wasnt sure about this. But you are saying that you have never experienced it. So I am not too worried. When you say there is no way to "refresh" during combat, are you saying I cant recharm a mob that breaks? What about a different Coercer charming the mob? Or can you just not cast it on aggroed mobs? I only two-box. Ive only played about three weeks, and then my playtime is very limited. Ive got a couple sorcerers to 15th, and they nuke and level pretty nicely by chaining a couple mobs, and double nuking them one at a time. But I do have an itch to play a Mage with more CC and power regen, having played an EQ Enchanter. Since they are a DPS class, as a Mage, and soon to be getting some type of increase in damage, Im ready to give them a shot. But I am basically good at heart, and the NPCs yell at me too often in FP. Plus all the Shady quests out there... Im betraying to Qeynos. Disneyland is more my style. I ask about Charm because Illusionists are suppose to be getting it, and you guys are the only ones that know what it like. So hopefully soon both Coercer and Illusionist will be getting nice upgrades to damage, and I can happily play Ratonga Illusionists. Thanks, Mal <div></div>

At a time beguile didn't work at all. Then SoE "fixed" it, but when used in a fight, you had big chances that the encounter you were fighting became NO-LOOT. Normaly, according to what i read, this has been fixed. Still charmed mob kept group buffs when charm wears off, and debuffing it would debuff group, i don't know if it's still like that now. What he meant about the inability to "refresh" the spell, is that as long as the mob is charmed, you can't recast charm on it (to keep it permanently charmed). You'll have to wait that the charm wears off before casting it again. And as mob's hate list is reseted when charmed and tank can't taunt it while charmed, he'll go after you when charm wears off, no matter how many taunts the tank had cast on it before you charmed it. Still if you're vigilant enough, you can recharm it just after it's decharmed, or stun then recharm. I never saw beguile in action (i would have loved too <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />), maybe i'll be able to see it one day.</span><div></div>

<DIV>Still keeps group buffs and still debuffs you if you try to dispell them group buffs on the mob.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I still only use charm for fun.</DIV>
Ahh. Not as bad as I thought. Keeping resist buffs does hurt I imagine. Fixing the NO-LOOT bit sounds good. Being able to recharm, even if I have to wait for a break to recast, beats no recharming. I am currently running a couple Sorcerers, but with the Combat Revamp coming along, and Enchanters getting some big boosts (I hope). Use to play an Enchanter in EQ, but given the abysmal damage output and CCing being much less important, I went Sorcerer. I think I might roll up a couple Enchanters for the revamp. Thanks guys. Very helpful information. Mal <div></div>
