View Full Version : Gear - how important is it really?

One day last week I went through Nizara with my all fabled illusionist, the following day I repeated the exercise with my newly dinged lvl 70 coercer, dressed in rags, both did equaly well. Since then I have taken Maliccia, the evil one, through Deathtoll, Halls of Seeing, Labs, Lyceum and a few other raid zones with no problems whatsoever. Huge difference in repair bills, little difference in performance (except for those proc items) - I think Imma ditch all that expensive fabled junk :smileytongue:

Mages don't really require gear to do their job as long as it has high enough INT. Gear for a mage is just fluff, a bonus.

I can honestly say, I have never noticed much of a difference on a raid whether I am naked or have everything on, except for maybe some procing items. Even resist stuff doesn't make much difference if you stay where your supposed too. Its really hard for me to use a repair kit knowing that.

I could think of allot of theoritcal crap that makes gear important too us, but I would just be fooling myself.

*STAY OUT OF THE WHELPS!*

Mihos

I agree gear is fluff for a mage. The most important part of a mage to me is spell upgrades. I would rather spend all my money on a master then a nice item. The only increase I see with items is effects that give you power or increased spell crits etc. But still not that big of a difference.

There are a few items that I find that would be really good for the extra proc DPS, but I doubt it will make a huge difference.

This prompts me to ask a question that I keep forgetting to ask: I've seen a certain fabled chalice type item that adds 15% DPS to magic spells. I've seen it on the broker a few times, but never purchased it. I was curious about it's effectiveness. Does it add 15% across the board to all magic spells? Does it stack with AA crits? How about stacking with the volatile magic AA? It seems on paper like a decent item, but I haven't read much on it.

Zebsen

DPS is like Attack Speed, except it bumps up the raw damage of melee/auto-attack instead of lowering the delay. And it comes off the princes, but damnit, I could have gotten you to buy our next one if I had gone and said it worked!

I read the item a few times when I saw Ishbu selling it. The first time I read it, I thought it was a DPS % improvement as you state it works. The next time, I swore I read it as a boost on all spell damage. /shrug. Must be faulty Lasics or a bad batch of beer.

As for talking me into buying it, 40ish plat is a bit too much to spend without realizing what it does. And you overestimate the amount of plat in my bank, lol.

Thanks for the info though.

Zeb

gear is mostly fluff.....the only things u gotta worry about are spell procs and INT. Power pool matters also, but only really if u use volatile magic, cuz with a higer powe pool its much easier to stay under 30% (and u can depend on mana flow more too).

It matters quite a bit in pvp, tho not as much as for melees who gain much more mitigation from high end gear. Still, resists are important there, and taking even one extra hit to kill (more mit/stam) can be the difference between getting healed up or eating dirt.

Message Edited by Melmoth1820 on 08-09-2006 10:39 PM

I couldnt agree more with most people in this thread that fabled gear fora caster is overrated. The only thing that it may bring to the table is mana regen or a proc. Otherwise you are better off spending your money on master as these dont need repair. I am glad to see there are more people thinking like this.-Acelia Lurking 70 Wizard of Nektulos

masters are most important i find then i find the proc items like fitzpizzle proc item (secondary ranged) and sash item from nizarra (wrist) those makes a bit difference dps and were items when i saw it first i was like oh i would really like those, other proc items are jewelry also but for not bad although it`s very minimal increase (still is an increase) mage cloth gear with procs instead of FT i haven`t found any that are kinda like now that is awesome and i need like the fitz or the wrist item for nizarra but i`m not also in a top raiding guild. but `i have to agree that it`s sad that fabled legendary treasured cloth doesn`t make a difference imo on pve

Gear only matters for HP and damage. HP lets you live through mistakes more, and damage lets you cut down the opportunities for mistakes to happen. Thus obviously, if no one makes a mistake, you can fly through zones nude with impunity.

Ft gear is probably the most important for us really due to the extremely poor cost vs damage of our spells.

Fizbang

P.s this is only to a certain extent cause once you get your aa maxed agilit and int you have to take a little off or you willr egen to a silly extent and its a pain in the [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] to sprint around like a mad man to keep it below 30%.

YES! in PvP It matters!

I can tank a good scout for a bit with my fabled/legendary. at 20, i had a blue scout unleash all he had on me for 5 seconds, was till in green. why? how? Legendary made a huge diff.

Resists arent a big deal in PvE, but the stat increases are. lvl 30 gear compared to my lvl 32 legend and 30 fabled almost dbls my INT, and gives me @$$loads of mitigation. I like mit due to the fact i'll melee a mob from behind if it isn't using AoE's.

I had tested it previously when trying out various ways to maintain my power level for Volatile Magic and must have done so incorrectly.
