View Full Version : Scout class/Illusionit duo?

Been thinking about duoing with a friend's new Illusionist. I'm really interested in trying out a scout since i've never played one. Just curious, which of the scout classes (Qeynos faction) would best complimant an illusionist's skills and why?

thanks for the help

That is a good question. And I keep seeing this question pop up on different class forums....maybe a similar name involved here... anyway

Opinions will vary ALOT on this question.

I personally would go for a ranger simply for the fact they can do massive dmg at a distance. Between our roots you should be able to duo just about anything.

Message Edited by Barobrain on 05-09-2006 02:41 PM

Just duoed my 25 illusionist with a 25 ranger last night actually. We were killing things rather easily, and we both maintained a constant mana level, so very little down time. I found that I had to resummon my persona after every fight, but wasnt a big deal (We were fighting up to 22^^ heroic groups

). I'm curious how it would go with a Troub as we could have two charms going at once...

Try with a troubador, their spells and your root are a great combination.

My wife plays a Swashy, and I let the personae tank so she can backstab. We work on one mob at a time, mezzing any extras. Works ok, if things go bad I use a long stun, she backs off and I can mez while we sort it out, or evac. Worked a lot better before they nerfed rogue hate transfer on pets though, still kind of peeved about that.

Actually, if we add in a healer we can do some pretty tough fights like this.

Troub and Illusionist used to be awesome because of proc DPS before the nerf to spell procs, but not sure how good it would be now. Both classes had their DPS nerfed in the same update, none of my primary DPS spells (Havoc, Beam) proc anything any more. (Havoc never, Beam, not enough to worry about).

Message Edited by Belizarius on 05-09-2006 05:50 PM

I've been duo'ing with a Ranger recently too and must say we make a great team. Root/Stun + Ranged attacks/spells are a very powerful combination, my pet can tank if root breaks and grouped heroic encounters are whittled down one-at-a-time (while the others are mezzed and patiently waiting their turn in to-be-killed queue :smileywink: ) but still very quickly with our impressive combined DPS; especially with the Ranger hasted.

I love having a Bard in full groups but have not duo'ed with one -- yet.

I would def say a swashy or brigand. They both do a LOT of dmg, can tank, have taunts and brig i believe has a heal if im correct. The amount of utility you would have if you had either of those classes would b ridiculous and you could probably kill forever.. Ranger would be good with the range and massive dmg and Troub would help you out wit INT and proc dps, so both very viable choices... But if i had a choice i would choose a brigand..Darkillusion Chronleaves70 Illusionist KithicorProud Member of Spite"Blaze Chronic"

Cool! Thanks for all of the info Think I am gonna try out a Swashy and a Ranger to level 10 and see which I prefer. Just two more questions. Does Swashy AoE break Illusionist Mez? Was under the impression a lot of swashy dps comes from AoE. Second, Can the Illusionist persona actually hold agro, thus enabling the Ranger to be affective with arrows?

Thanks again for the help!!!!

Your main advantage will be stun/root. Say it does go after the ranger, you quickly stun it and then root. Rinse repeat. I think also the ranger can put down his trap which also roots in front of the mob so that when it does go after him it will root. So with enough practice and smart strats a ranger/illus can be a deadly combo.

Also, your pet has a REALLY nice root you can probably send him in until he roots make sure he doesn't get within melee and then send him back. Stack your root on top. And while you have the mob locked down mr ranger is doing 700-1k DPS.

Message Edited by Barobrain on 05-10-2006 09:17 AM

Yeah, I'd say if it's gonna be a strict duo, ranger would allow you to take on the toughest stuff using the tactic Barobrain mentioned. If you had a healer for a trio, swashy would be nice as a sort of light tank/dps. (Swashbucklers are good, but would be tough to get in all their melee damage without a healer. Ranger wouldn't have that problem.) If you were going to be full-grouping a lot, troubador would be really nice, especially in a group with a tank, healer, and two other mages. With just an illusionist+troubador, it would be some work to get things killed. Probably fun, though, and you would certainly have quite an array of tricks at your disposal.

We find that if my wife gives the personae a few seconds to build aggro, it's usually not an issue, especially if we're using the pet to pull. I rarely bother with root, just stun or stifle and dismay. Swashies still have pretty good aggro reduction buffs and an emergency evade, and can also debuff the mob's attack. She can steal aggro if she needs to, but should she do so the mob is so heavily debuffed that it doesn't hurt much anyway, plus she can Lie Low and return aggro to the pet. Works for us.

I can imagine that with a Ranger, you might need to use root spells more.

At high levels, Swashies also get a very decent ranged CA (Hail of Steel), they can pull about 15k damage over 30 seconds with that.

Message Edited by Belizarius on 05-10-2006 05:21 PM

Best bet would actually be a troub.

Since they ar INT based scouts and have many caster buffs, that would be your best bet. Your buffs will compliment each other.

True you may not have the extreme dps a pred or swashy can bring, but you'll notice a good balance for both of you as you both are utility. with a troub you should maintain constant mana levels as well. watch your INT go hand in hand with your buffs and a constant stream dps stream from both of you. plus you will both have some cc ability.

A dirge would not be as good just cuz they are melee buffers.

The troub also has a short duration buff that lasts around 30 seconds that makes it so everything you cast has a 100% chance for a proc. That will increase your DPS significantly.

I duo frequently with a Dirge. Our in combat power regen stacks, and my pets usually can keep aggro if he uses his aggro reducers... if he gets below half life I root, he backs up, I cancel my DoTs, and mez. Then we just wait for our power / health and go at it again. even if I have to summon a new pet mid fight, we can usually duo ^^^ mobs that are a level or two over us. it's great xp. :smileytongue:
