I'm going to post this here because no one seems to check archetype or class forums I have a dilemma. I started a baby mage basically to mess around with. just want something with good soloability and fun, but not too very challenging So the question comes down to: Illusionist Wizard Conjuror I know you wouldn't be playing the class if you didn't like it, but how was early lvls for soloing? Good? bad? tough to learn? I've been looking around the forum, and it seems that while the class is fun, its not easy to solo with, and its a challenging class to master. While I don't mind working at a class, this toon is to be for fun only. No pressure to lvl, no worries about whether i group or not. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well, with charm at early levels and then personae afterwards, soloing as an illusionist is light years beyond where it was at release. Hopefully a lower-level illusionist will be able to chime in with how things are now, but I know it's better than it was. Are we great soloers? No, we won't be able to solo white/blue heroics or anything, but with a variety of stuns, stifles, dots, and nukes, we can go against solo mobs with a reasonable amount of speed, downtime, and risk. I'd certainly rather solo as an illusionist than a templar, for example. However, if you're really looking for something fun and enjoyable, especially at soloing, you really can't go wrong with a conjuror at the moment. And there's no big surprise that there are a ton of conjuror and necro alts being made nowadays. Personally, if I were making a "just for fun" alt right now, and I wanted a mage, I would pick conjuror, not illusionist.

Message Edited by Impetus on 12-06-2005 07:40 PM

If you want something not too challenging, then 'chanter is the wrong class to pick. I'd guess most of us chose it because we wanted to play a more challenging class.

If you mainly expect to solo, then a summoner is probably the way to go.

Sorceror should also be fairly easy to play.

Welp.. i'm at about 4-5 days on my account now and my Illusionist is 26, as well as 30ish Sage.

I'd say not too bad.. seeing as how i've solo'd all of it.

An illusionist can solo any non-epic mob in the game that isnt immune or highly resistant to mental damage. But, they cant solo anything with a single up arrow or higher without lots of time and effort.

Also, if you are looking for a 'just for fun' class, this is definately the wrong class to pick. An enchanter (both illu and coercer) is easy to play, but extremely hard to master. In any fight youll need to stay on your toes and properly react to what comes at you......youll need to know the cast/recast/duration of all your spells, find different combinations of chains between them, and quickly pick the best one to use in different situations. Its pretty easy to mezz stuff, but what do you do when more stuff comes and u cant mezz anything else cuz the recast on your mezzes is too long? How do you switch between stuns and mezzes to safely hold more mobs still than your mezzes alone could for long enough for the group to stay alive? Even though these cases arent very frequent, youll still have to learn to make prenty of judgements on what your group can or can't take based on your knowledge of their classes and the mobs.

Anyway chances are that if this is just some alt u wanna play to kill time and dont really care about being real good at it, then this really isnt the class for you. If you want to create your own challenges trying to take on very hard mobs solo, or if you want a class that will pretty much force you to really really learn the game, and you are ready to put hours and hours into it to really become good, then this class is really your best bet. Groups look at enchanters the way they look at tanks in a sense....if you are really good at playing the class (which takes alot of effort in both cases) then groups will start to trust that you will keep them from debt. If you just wanna slack all the time and not worry about much more than how much DPS you can put out without grabbing aggro, then I highly recommend something else.

I pretty much agree with all the above posters... this is NOT the class for your 'fun time'.

Kailen - 60 Illusionist Faydark

While I do agree that an Illusionist is a challenging class to play. I have planty of "fun" with mine!

An Illusionist is NOT to be taken lightly, you will die, alot. But once you figure it out it becomes quite satisfying.

I actually ("crosses fingers and hopes the devs don't read this") think the Illusionist cals is quite powerful when properly played, even solo.

Simply realize you are not designed to deal massive damage and you are designed to "control" your encounter and you will be alright.

Just my 1/2 cp
