In the Quick tips and tricks thread, I suggested if we boost the subjugation skill by 5, it would mean resist checks for our spells would be as if we were a level higher. Strewth is under the impression this is no longer true. Has anyone got any data on this to resolve the question.

I know that when lev 56, but with +25 subjugation skill from a troubie buff and items, I was able to mez some lev 65's without too many resists. It certainly felt like the resist rate was as if I were 61, and not 56. But it's only one experience. Has anyone else had other experience to answer the question one way or the other?

Elleii, 58 Illusionist, Antonia Bayle

PS I include a copy of my original post below:

Boost your subjugation skill

Warlocks and Troubadours have great buffs which boost your casting skills. A level 59 Dirge I grouped with boosted mine by 41. That meant that, when calculatiing resists against high level mobs, my effective level was over 4 more than my actual level (5 points per level). With items, my effective level was 5 higher.

Get items to boost subjugation. There aren't many, many are high level, but they are for sale sometimes on the broker. There are others which can be obtained through quests, and of course rare drops. These include:

Stein of Lies (+2 subjugation) - I have constantly used this in preference to the seemingly more powerful Stein of Mogguk HQ item because of the subjugation bonus. I bought mine off the Broker.

Prismatic Rod of the Scale (+2 subjugation, plus massive other benefits) - reward from the huge tier 5 epicX4 series of quests that end in the Deception quest. You'll need a good guild or guild alliance to get this.

Orb of Madness (+5 subjugation) - a drop off Spirits of the Lost. Good luck, I haven't got it yet.

Empyreal Bracelet (+4 subjugation) - from Silent City. Again I don't have yet. Good luck.

There are items to boost your Disrpution (damage) and Ordination (debuff), but neither matter as much. We do a lot of damage indirectly without resists, and have only one debuff spell. But Subjugation affects our most powerful spells: stun, mez, stifle and construct. With boosted subjugation, a lower level Illusionist can save their high level group mates in the worst of situations versus heroic mobs.

[Edit: Strewth has submitted a post saying the effect of increased subjugation is less than I believed. He may be right, and thanks for the comment Strewth. I'll open up a thread to ask that question, rather than move off-topic into a discussion here]

It definitely used to be try. I do not know if it is still true but if it is I don't believe it is extremely significant.

Basically, we don't really know. Here's a thread in the warlock forum about this. (Their concentration buff increases casting skills instead of intelligence, like most other mages do.) Link to warlock thread In that thread Lockeye makes several posts. Here's the first one he made. Now, Moorgard earlier made a post about a similar topic. Here's the post. It's here where he says that skill buffs no longer give you a higher effective level. Also in that post, he says that the skill buffs matter more against lower level opponents, and matter less against higher level opponents. I have a feeling Moorgard is incorrect. I think that the buff does get the full effect against opponents lower than you (like everything), but that it doesn't make much of a difference in that case, since you're rarely resisted anyway. Moorgard says "the buffs will matter less against oranges and reds" - but I think what he means is that the buffs aren't as strong against oranges and reds. However, it will matter more against oranges and reds, since that's where you're most often resisted. Hope those links helped some. I'll be very interested to test the change when it gets here. (That is, the change to our Fleeting Thoughts line.)

Message Edited by Impetus on 11-29-2005 08:55 PM
