If you have a good solo Technique, please post it here. I like to solo during down time of LFG and when I only have a short time to play. I would like to see different techniques to improve my exp per hour efficiency.

Here is mine at level 27. Have been using on 31's in EL for about .5 per kill. 7-10% per hour targets permitting. Not as good as solo with my Pally but at least the bar moves.

I start with a root. Then triple dot. Then start HO, cast nuke 1, and re-root. Then finish HO.

At this point if he is still rooted I repeat.

If he breaks, my root has not reset so I run a bit and Mez on the fly, this breaks almost immediately, but I get .5 to 3 secs of a break which is enough to get out of his mele range.

If it is the .5 sec I kite him until the dots wear off, Mez on the fly again and repeat the root rot cycle. Kiting works surprisingly well with an Illusionist.

If it is the 3 sec I root him again or stun if the root is still not up. then repeat root rot.

Alternately, if he breaks and I don't have room to run I stun him, pull back and repeat.

I have heard of a nuke/mez strat but unsure how it works, tried a couple variations but no real success. Anyone know that one?

Sounds like your using roughly the same strategy i did while in your level range. Kind of a root'n'rot'n'sometimes'kite strat :smileyvery-happy:

(Edit: As Oghier points out below -- i forgot to mention that root'n'rot is only viable while Binding Light still functions, which is on MoB's up to level 38. Every root we recieve later on has a 3 second cast time and is unreasonable for any kind of use as a root'n'rot/kite strat)

Mezz/Nuke strategy is very simple, and you've probably done it. Basically:

stand at very edge of speechless casting distance (which is very far)

Pull w/ speechless

Either cast speechless again (if you have 4 secs till MoB is to you) or wait till MoB is in root range and than do your 2nd speechless

After 2nd speechless has worn off (generally MoB is drained) mezz the MoB

I understand speechless does not tick as heavily as it used to due to DoT resistance changes across the board --- so draining the MoB before engaging may be unpractical now.

Mezz/Nuke from here on.

Move to edge of nuke casting range

wait for mezz to recycle

Initiate HO

Nuke

immediately after casting the nuke begin to backpedal away from MoB

immediately after casting the nuke, while backpedaling mezz the MoB.

repeat until MoB's out of health

This strategy sucks for exp gain, and root'n'rot/kite is much faster. The only time mezz/nuke really is a viable solo solution is if you're attempting to tackle MoB's that would otherwise be to strong for you alone -- but you need them for a quest. Some illusionist's reported being able to solo yellow ^^ MoB's using this strategy...yet it took upwards of 30 minutes. I personally successfully solo'd a blue ^^ MoB using this strat....though w/ how long it took i never tried it again.

Draining the MoB beforehand is neccessary for attempting MoB's which would otherwise be to strong for you....as w/ one resisted mezz 90% of your hp could be gone in a few seconds from a blue ^^ MoB....if that same blue MoB is out of power, you can last a few more seconds. If you do get a resist - fall back on stun's/roots/running around till mezz refreshes.

One thing that does make this strategy move along slightly faster is grouping w/ a wizz/warlock. Virtually everything's the same....just use the wizz/warlock's nukes in place of your own. Though even w/ a much larger nuke added to the equation it's still generally not worth the time.

Message Edited by Dainger on 04-18-2005 04:15 PM

That means it took me 3.5 mins to kill one grey solo mob where i hardly got any resists.

I tried same on grey ^^ afterwards. I got a lot of resists and finally gave up after 10-12 mins when the mob was still at 50%.

Its doable if you are a very patient person (i am not :smileywink: ).
Once Binding Light is obsolete, you have to tank anything you're going to solo. The tough bit about this is, we're not very good tanks Here is what I am doing now (at 47th):

1) Speechless from maximum range

2) Drain Will (Stun). Between this and the Speechless, the mob will be down to about 10 - 20% of its power.

3) Another Speechles. You can skip this, if you are confidant the mob's opening specials won't hit you too badly

4) Wither Hope

5) Lobotomize

6) Gloom (the debuffs from Gloom and Wither Hope do stack)

7) Work HO's with Phantasmal Charge and Scorching Beam until it's dead.

Here are some hints:

- Make an HO Macro Key for soloing, with three lines. Line 1 is /useability Arcane Augur. Line 2 is /useability Phantasmal Charge. Line 3 is /useability Scorching Beam. These are cap sensitive. Note, the macro key will not fire off all three lines -- you have to tap it again to get line 3, the second nuke, to fire. I just tap it incessantly when doing HO's. Due to the quick refresh time on Phantasmal Charge, you can string them together quickly. If Arcane Storm comes up, refresh a DoT.

- If you can find a master version of Phantasmal Charge, jump all over it. As often as we use this low-level spell to work HO's, it is my favorite master spell (I also have Lobotomize, Gloom, and Phantasmal Grandeur masters)

- Try to hunt caster critters, and avoid berserker-based ones at all costs. If you are fighting tough melee critters, a Dismay can help, too.

- Most of the solo critters in the Feerrott are *severe* undercons. I was getting slaughtered by blue- and green-con evols and huuptics there. The solo critters in Everfrost are much easier to handle (when you get to that level range).

- Your constructs are a great DPS boost, which will unfortunately only be available every third or so fight. I save them for tougher critters. Always cast Wither Hope (or Nightmare) first, to reduce the chance of the Construct being wholly resisted.

- You may have stocked up on INT gear for raids. Have a lot of STA and AGI gear ready for solos/ small groups. An extra pair of dolls is fairly cheap, and you can now switch foods as well.

- It is *incredibly* expensive for a fighter to gather a full set of rare-crafted armour. It is not so expensive for us -- figwarts go for a lot less than ebon. Of course, fancy robes don't help as much as ebony vanguard, but they will still help you tank better than most 'treasured' level stuff.

Finally, a word about Root and Rot. I gave up on using Root as a solo tool once Binding Light wore out. Lock Mind and Terrifying Vision both have three-second cast times, and I find that they usually break before their recast time is even up. Speechless & Nightmare produce a LOT of little root-breaking dings. I will admit not to have experimentd much with Root and Rot for a few levels. If anyone is having great luck using Terrifying Vision + DoT's, please speak up I hope to hear I'm wrong about this technique, because I have no idea how else we're going to solo once Speechless becomes obsolete.

Message Edited by Oghier on 04-18-2005 03:29 PM

If you have a lot of room its a better imo to cast your two Dots ( lobotomize first as it as the longer range) and then basically run in a large circle until the dot wears off then remez and repeat. You can also mez mid kite to gain a couple extra inches on the mob if you need it. It works best on lower conned mobs. and you need quite a bit of room to do it, or you'll get hit rounding corners and stuff.

On "solo" mobs, I just tank them. I pull with Speechless, run a little (optional) and Capture Mind. Depending on the room I have I could use root to finish draining power and cast Dismay. Or chain with another speechless and enter melee while casting. A drained/dismayed solo mob does not hurt that much. Then with DoTs up and using HOs including stuns (Drain Will) the mob is dead before I am. Of course I don't try this on 59+ mobs, only blue/green 58-.

I've posted my method on the boards before, but I figured I'd repost in this thread for posterity. It's quite similar to some of the other techniques posted... perhaps because it works! At levels 36 & 37, I have had great success soloing in the Feerrott. I can take on any of the solo yard trash (lvls 36 - 3 near the entrance to the zone (including Bitter Blooms, Lizards, Damselflies, Huuptic Fetchers) I start the fight by draining the mob's power: Speechless (from a distance) Blinding Light (as soon as the mob is close enough to cast) - BL has a faster cast time than Lock Mind, and at 37 is still as, if not more effective than LM Speechless (to finish the power drain) Then I start draining the mob's health: :smileywink: Tormenting Visions Nightmare Koldhagon's Bolt of Lethargy Cerebral Spasm (I usually only cast this if Blinding Light is still holding) * If Blinding Light breaks before or during the DoT layering, casting Uncertainty helps prevent Interruptions while you get through them At some point, Blinding Light will break. That's ok! With the mob's power drained you should be able to tank well enough to kill the mob and still have a good amount of health left. From here on out, just cycle HO's till the mob is dead. I very rarely die like this (most of my deaths are from group breeze aggro and newbie mistakes). It's also really efficient. Kills are pretty quick... in the short time it takes for Uncertainty's timer to refresh after the fight, you'll be able to heal to full and find another target. I can get anywhere from 10-15% experience/hour using this method. And if you get into any real trouble you can always mez and run!

Message Edited by MillsFairchild on 04-25-2005 08:40 AM

Alrighty, here's my strat. I am currently pulling 16-22% per hour xp off of manticores (Sattars) in Feerott at level 37 (just dinged 3. 1) Lock Mind to pull 2) Speechless 3) If break, (binding light, start HO, then speechless), if not, Nightmare (5% chance for all damage to provide extra) 4) If break, (binding light, start HO, then speechless,) if not, DOT 2 5) Binding light (if not already done) 6) Start HO (if not already done) 7) Speechless (if not already done) If mob breaks during this or any additional, do quick stun first then the longer stun after HO goes off 9) Nuke 1 10) If one of the two dots didn't go off, hit it 11) Finish Nuke if not already done 12) If time until HO goes off, hit dot if it's expiring, if not Nuke 13) Repeat HO and steps 9-12. Stun when possible (if the mob is actually hitting you). This might be a bit confusing, but it's basically *drain everything first, throw dots in speechless downtime, then HO HO and HO again if needed*. It works exceptionally well on things 2-3 levels higher than me, and I usually only take 2-4 hits. After a fight, I'm ready for another in less than 10 seconds. If my power is a lot lower than my health, I just use the convert spell to make them even. Power and health regen % about the same rate b/c health is lower than power and power has Breeze buff up.

Message Edited by MoonglumX on 04-25-2005 12:31 PM

While I'd rather group when I can, a lot of times it just doesn't make sense. And instead of just bumming around rearranging my apartment again, I'd rather be out picking up 15% and a few drops for the hour that I can hope on.

Well, as no-one's mentioned my soloing strategy I'll throw it in here. Similiar to Mezz/Nuke, but mainly using HO's-

Capture Mind

Start HO

Aneurysm (AD III lvl, mezzes most mobs with less than High Mental resists 80% of the time on completion)

If Arcane Strike then-

Phantasmal Charge? (Not sure of name, the late 20's fast casting nuke anyway)

OR if Arcane Storm

Bewildering Cascade/Uncertainty

Backpedal a little, Capture mind, repeat as needed.

Can get most mobs down into the yellow/orange in about 3 cycles, and then it's time to DoT it to the finish. (Use all DoTs I have, Nightmare/Terrifying Visions/Koldhagens Gloom upgrade/Cerebral Spasm to help proc Nightmare)

I'm lvl 40 and the only time this strategy struggled was just before I got Aneurysm, when Psychic Assailant wasn't mezzing reliably as it was very green. I can take solo yellows with almost no risk, and it really doesn't take all that long.

My tip- Upgrade Aneurysm to Adept III as a No2 priority after Illusory Shroud. Not a great deal of use in groups, but soloing it's a godsend.

At level 49, almost 50, I'm not really soloing anything higher than a blue, or maybe a white. But usually blues, for writs or just some solo xp. Here's the technique I use, and it works very well for me. Might not for you. First, especially since I'm usually soloing in Lavastorm, I find a safe spot. Standing up on those big spike things usually works. Then, I find my mob. Lead off with Speechless, because I rarely fight anything 48+ solo. As soon as it's close enough, I fire off Drain Will. The power nuke helps in my power draining, and the stun lets me... Fire off Mind Drain and then Speechless again immedietly after. By the time I'm done casting Speechless again, the mob has woken up, but it's now stifled and by the time the stifle wears off, it's drained of power. If the mob's still hitting me too much for comfort, I slap a Dismay on there too, but usually that's not needed. Now the DoTs. Lobotomize and Wither Hope, as well as Construct of Logic if it's up. Fire up an HO, and either trigger it with Phantasmal Charge (grey, but still useful due to short casting time and low power usage) or Scorching Beam (DoT effect is good), and hope for a lighting icon. Alternate ending HOs with Prismatic Strife or Aneurysm, or Wither Hope if the star icon comes up. Or Lobotomize on the rare fireball icon. Usually I don't even have to refresh my DoTs, and things die a lot faster when my pet's up. All of my spells are Adept I, although a few are AppIV. Of course I have Insight up, and I have good food to make my downtimes shorter. I've also recently aquired an imbued linen robe, a T5 rare crafted imbued chest piece for mages. The healing proc helps, and sometimes I don't even need the food to lessen downtime. And for amusement, but also useful -- my techique for running away from that too-tough mob. Let's say you're running through an area, and some ++ starts beating on you. Since Capture Mind is uninterruptible, just cast it while running -- assuming your current target was clear, the offending mob should have been auto-targeted. Run away, mez while running. Then type /y to break the encounter, and at this point I usually invis... because who wants to pick up something else while running away? Oh yeah, make sure you get far enough away. I've had mobs come running after me once mez wore off, and that didn't turn out too well. I call it my 'enchanter runs like scared little chicken' survival technique.

I have 2 that I use depending on the mob/mobs I'm fighting. I am currently 44 very near 45 and deal with single target yellows with ease in everfrost. I'm pretty sure I could orange with this technique if I could find enough running room I might have to wander out to terrors area and give it a try. The other is for blue and green 1 down arrow groups that I kill in Feerrott alot.

Single target works like this.

Cast Speechless from max range and backpedal till it's very near completing or done then while continuing to backpedal or running away capture mind

Speechless again from max range immedeatly followed by

mespha's torturing visions (lobotomize/torturous visions they all share the speechless range so they start casting right away and who knows the damage decrease might actually work on the mob.

I immedeatly follow up with wither hope Adept III and 9 times out of 10 it's finished casting and koldhagon's bolt of lethargy is on it's way before the mob reaches me followed by Cerebral Spasm Adept III

I then Immedeatly trigger and HO with Drain Will Complete the HO in 1 of 2 ways

First way - Single target HO (Arcane Fury) - I finish the HO with Scorching Beam quickly re-apply Wither Hope and start up another HO triggered by Phantasmal Splendor doesn't matter which one it turns out to be at this point mob is very nearly dead just finish the second HO

Second way - AoE HO (Arcane Storm) - Finish the HO with Wither Hope as it should be ready to be recast and here I might try a lock mind on a yellow on blue or lower just trigger another HO. If the lock mind sticks I back off and trigger another HO with Phantasmal and finiesh off the mob more or less.

In any event, 90% of the time I finish off yellows with more than 3/4 power and 3/4 health. I can usually chain maybe 2 or 3 straight yellows back to back doing this. This of course requires you pay attention to where you are and what mobs are around you. Adds can ruin your whole day for sure.

1 down arrow groups:

I wouldn't recommend trying anything above blue on these but ya never know /shrug Mostly I work greens and blues with this.

This is much more fluid and you can change up a lot depending on the group size or how things are going.

generally speaking I'm working the lizard groups and most of the time they are groups of 3

Speechless from mid range

while it is casting retarget to another mob in the group

as soon as new mob is in range start backpedalling while casting capture mind

stop and retarget to last mob cast convincing regalia and target oringal mob

Wither Hope then speechless again then the rest of the DoT's and scorching beam that should be enough to drop a low blue and certainly a green just make sure to capture mind the mob that you convincing regaliad earlier then repeat the speechless DoT routine on the remaining 2 while keeping the one not dot'd mezed. They simply dont hit hard enough to drop you too much and as long as you keep them stifled/drained they won't cast and a lot are casters. I've managed to drop a couple non down arrow/heroic groups doing this as well it's all about keeping the specials out of play and working on casters is a big benefit to us.

I am level 45 and my strat is similar but different from the ones here. This one is devised for close quarters(aka no running room), and you do tank a bit, but nothing should be too hard.

1) Pull with Speechless

2) while it is running to you, cast wither Hope (this lowers the resists and lets Speechless drain more, sometimes necessary for some enraged solo mobs)

3)Koldran's Bolt of Lethargy, Tormenting Visions

4) HO

5) Scorching Beam

6) Nuke/Stun

7) By now if the mob's hp is higher than 25%, I will recast Wither Hope, but in most curcimstances, it is not necessary.

Either let it die from the dots to conserve mana, or cast more nukes, shouldn't take more than one or two.

9) Death for the mob.

During the whole fight I do not move from where I started combat. I should also note that when I solo, my gear is centered towards AGI/STA/HP and less for mana, since you only need the regen, not a huge power pool for solo fights(also using imbued T5 pants/robe). Using this method I kill level 45 solos fairly easy and am still over 75% hp and mana per fight.

Senyen Faradhi

Befallen

Chaos
