View Full Version : Upgrade AE Root?
I am a 52 warlock with an Adept1 Bony Grasp. Should I upgrade it to Adept3? I could just wait and use the 54 Skeletal Grasp... Is that really any better than Bony Grasp? Based on pre-CU experience, I am suspicious our roots don't improve at any level or upgrade. But I am eager to hear otherwise.

I waited.. I would suggest waiting and just upgrading Skeletal Grasp when you get it. I went straight from Adept I Bony Grasp to Adept 3 Skeletal Grasp and the difference I noticed was minimal. I've killed harpies in PoF almost exclusively since DoF release. With Ad1 Bony Grasp, I would often get resists on cast.. like 2 harpies would be rooted and one would resist right off the bat. Not every time, not even really a majority of the time, but definitly annoying and noticable.

With Adept 3 Skeletal Grasp, I hardly ever get resisted on the cast. I can't even remember a time that I did except maybe with the named Harpies that pop every once in awhile. It breaks just as easily as Bony Grasp ever did though as soon as I cast the first AoE.

All-in-all I would recommend waiting for Skeletal rather than upgrading Bony.. but whether or not I would upgrade Skeletal if you're not swimming in T6 rares is a different story.

Ask yourself this -- solo or group more? If solo, then roots and stuns are the first spells that should be upgraded. If group, then dps comes first.

Personally I would wait if you plan on grouping a lot until you can scribe skeletal grasp; if you are going to solo AE mobs or heroics as your primary way of achieving xp...you might as well upgrade bony grasp.

T6 rares are pretty cheap and common if you can harvest during non-peak hours, so I've been upgrading every spell as I level.

It seems there is little difference now between level upgrades other than longer durations etc for roots since they removed the mob level caps from them. Upgrading to adept 3 from adept 1 regardless of what root it is should (in theory) allow your root to last longer to near full duration listed on its delve so it does not break early (provided no damage is being done, chance to break as far as I know is not changed by upgrades). In beta the value change to resist chances was listed on delve descriptions and was around an extra 20% from adept 1 to 3 however that number could have changed when they totally redid the resist system near the end to how it is more like now. They removed the values when they put new system in so its hard to say that the values are still the same as before but in patch notes it was listed that spell qualities would still be a factor in resists (however not the only factor so its hard to say how much upgrading now is really measurable but its noticable) so there is a benefit to upgrading them as high as possible (in theory at least) but whether or not you want to wait for the next level version of the spell and upgrade that one instead is up to you.
