View Full Version : Soloing 40+
Okay, so today I will be 40, and I understand that we get the spell Bony Grasp. This spell, as I understand it, changes our soloing techniques a lot. So I have a few questions I will need answered.

Should I continue to solo solo mobs? Or focus more onto group mobs?

Where should I start going to maximize the AOE effect of bony grasp?

What's the basic spell chain at 40? (Right now I opened with BSS, shlap a frozen manacles on, one quick debuff, nil distortion, and finish with another BSS.)

With this spell, should I be soloing heroic mobs now?

I think I have more that I left out, but these questions would greatly help me. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Soloing heroics is a lot of effort for little reward really. Bony Grasp helps but it's by no means a sure thing. The best xp for me recently was duoing with a Wizard in Everfrost. We'd alternate unbreakable roots and pretty much chain kill the ^^ snow leopards. I'd suggest grabbing a Wizard with Ring of Cold (or a Warlock if you don't mind not being able to use certain spells) and try that. If you really want to solo go to Splitpaw and do each solo instance in turn. If the instances lock you out for extended period just kill in the upper tunnels. Solo groups with multiple mobs in each are the best solo xp I found. Spell order? Whatever does the most damage in the smallest amount of time, it's not like aggro is an issue. If you're trying to solo a heroic and need to overlap FM with BG make sure you don't have any DoT's running when the time comes. I always found soloing terribly boring though but if xp is all you want then go for it.

1. The answer to this one depends on the purpose. Fastest xp or loot/quest? If it's fastest xp you are better off just solo'ing solo mobs. The grouped mobs in Feerrott are nice (if you want to utilize) bony grasp (non-heroic). Once I hit 42 and went to EF, I found the spider cave to be amazing xp (and loot.) By 43 I decided to start experimenting with Bony Grasp on heroic mobs (I'd solo first floor of PF) -- it was not as good xp or loot as spider cave or anyother spot with a large and fast respawn of "solo" mobs.

2. Only place I can think of off the top of my head was Feerrott that I used the AoE effect of Bony Grasp when solo'ing. Well, the lava crawlers in LS too.

3. If it's a solo mob, I open with Tara's Necrotic Nebula or Deter, start HO and Nil Distortion, BSS, Noxious Bolt -- it's dead before it can hit me. Both my ND and NB are masters so . . . I'm not sure if that'll work for lower versions -- you might have to put flashfreeze in the mix if that doesn't kill them.

4. I wouldn't unless you need to (ie. solo camps are taken or it's for quests.) The thing is you can solo heroic mobs pretty easily with Bony Grasp, but you can easily die too with just 1 or 2 resists of stuns or frozen manacles after BG's timer expires.

Feerrott from 37-43 then EF/PF/MM or Splitpaw 43-47 is what I am doing TBH. Splitpaw seems to have a better chance for master chests though, I guess, although I have not seen one.

I have to disagree with the previous posters about soloing heroic mobs. I found post level 40 that soloing heroic mobs was much better XP/time than solo mobs. It may just depend of how well equiped you are (I had a master nil distortion and adept 3 damage spells) and your temperament. You can't go toe-to-toe with heroic mobs so if your roots/stuns gets resisted you have to break the encounter and try again; dying negates any XP advantage you might gain. I spent level 40 to 43 soloing in the NE quadrant of the enchanted lands, just west of where the docks to LS use to be. I did try solo mobs from time to time but the XP definitely seemed slower. Some of that may be due to the fact that finding a constant supply of solo mobs can be difficult; the situation may be better in SP.

It does depend. All my nukes were master1 at 42 (all worthy of being on hotbar anyway) and keeping spiders cleared in EF gave me about 15g/hr and a significant amount more xp than solo'ing the first floor of PF. Even when I was 46 spiders were still better xp than PF.

But when I duo'd with my necro friend in PF the xp was obviously greater than solo'ing spiders. heh

Where is the best place to solo 47-50 besides Splitpaw?

Thanks for the responses! It helps a lot. Now, I noticed many of you said The Ferrott is good exp. Which mobs exactly did you kill? Also, what if the mobs are far away from each other? Bony Grasp roots in AOE.

Best place I found to solo 47+ was the groups of giants outside of perma, There are enough iants theer to keep you buys, adn sicne they aer at most Sigle up arrows you can survive a hit or 8 if you get a bad chain of resists. When you kill all those mobsmove out into teh cave asn slaughter all the giant solo mobs who have no HP.

About 44 I started killing the giants outside Solusek's Eye. I think I got over 2% each when I had vitality, and it might have been almost 3%. It wasn't that hard, you just had get ready to run if you got a resist on one of your roots. Luckily, you were close enough to the portal across Lavastorm, or to the SE door. As for my method, I think it went something like this (keep in mind this was a long time ago, so don't call me on a spell that I didn't have at 44 ): Bony Grasp Curse of Emptiness Chaotic Maelstrom HO Starter Nil Distortion BSS HVB Dark Pyre Ice Spike Dark Distortion HVB Aura of Darkness Nil Distortion Deter Frozen Manacles Wait about 10 seconds, Bony Grasp should be back up, and you're good to go for round two. Usually took me 3 rounds to take down one of those giants. Having +disruption and/or +subjugation skill equipment really, really helps here. Another thing that helps is to get a UI mod that shows your maintained spells with the timer next to them in some fashion. Bony Grasp always breaks early, but I don't think I've seen it break any earlier than 12 seconds left. Just watch the timer and make sure you have Aura of Darkness being cast by then, and the thing will never move. If it does, start running .

I started doing the same, Korpo. I'm level 44 and I'm killing the Tundra Terrors in Everfrost.

After succesfully soloing a few, there's no doubt in my mind after the combat revamp we're not going to be able to anymore. Farm the ^^'s whilst you can!

IMHO i'd find a warlock/wizard friend that plays similar times to you - i found duoing a lot more fun/rewarding

Agreed, duoing with another sorc probably triples your exp gain over time.
