View Full Version : Need help understanding what devastation is doing on raid mobs... no message, no damage

I'm usually playing my brigand on raids, but I needed to fill in with poison resists the other night in the froglok raid CT instance. Aside from the Zek instance, this is the first time I've attacked raid mobs with my Warlock, so I expected to see a few surprises on resists and such.

What I know now: Most of the ^^^ mobs seemed to be very resistant to poison. I could land maybe half my nukes, but even with debuffs on, Master 1 Nil hit for 500-650 max, the others for 200s. I think that's just how they designed these mobs, and this is pretty much what wizards have to put up with on most mobs. No biggie.

BUT, what I don't get: On several of the mobs (varanak, named lizards, named golems ^^^) I would cast devastation, get the little blue "rush of poison" message, NO resist message.... but NO DAMAGE.

What is going on here? I tried moving close to the mob, thinking it might be a range thing. The spell certainly works on epics (though the final effect does not) as it hit epics all night. It just acts very strangely on some of the names.

Any ideas?

Thats the same type of message we, Wizards, get on Ice Immune mobs. What does this mean? It means that no ammount of debuffing will allow you to hit that mob. I'm sorry to say, but the mob you were fighting was either Poison or Disease Immune.

Except that it's not immune, and there is no immune message. It gives the normal blue "you blast with poison" or whatever, that you get on a successful hit... the only thing missing is the damage counters that follow. Other mobs that are either immune or highly resistant just resist devastation, and I get the normal "you try to ... but .... resists."

The same mobs were taking 200-650 damage from poison nukes. I thought I remembered devastation being disease based, but re-examining last night it says poison. In addition, our debuff which IS disease based (chaotic maelstrom) landed (occasionally). So neither mob was completely immune to poison or disease.

So it's not a full resist to the element, at least... perhaps to that "type" or tier of spell? I don't know.

Message Edited by Aralys on 06-20-2005 12:39 PM

I know its not saying resists or is saying "Immune". We get this with Ice Comet ALOT on raid mobs. There is no damage number, no Immune message, and only a combat spam message saying that "You call down an Ice Comet upon ~insert mob's name here~". No resist message or anything.

Now... the question would be, can you see that the mob is losing any Health when the Devastation hits? I've tried to see this with Ice Comet, but on the raid mobs, they have so much health, and there are so many people pounding away that you cant tell if it is your damage, or if it is someone else's.

And for some reason, I have had Westfend's Ice Spear land and do damage on mobs that are supposedly Ice Immune. This doesnt jive with my issue with Ice Comet.

This sounds exactly like the issue that Wizards are having.

This happens on the Frog raid for chanters as well, against Sfyzk the Mad. It "strikes" but does no mental damage. Most mobs are Immune to 1-type, and Resistant to the next.

Thats; exactly right. On Devestation on highly poison resistant mobs it casts, it ticks, but does no damage. I had that happen on a non-raid mob...Tarnis, the FBSS mob in Feerott.

Kinda sucks debuffing for almost 2000 and having your trusty 2000+ damage Nil Distortion doing ALMOST 400 and BSS doing less than 100...argh I never felt so useless. I mean face it, w/o our nukes we have no utility. Our mana dump sucks...125 every 17 sec...ick, and our power drain is ever worse....276 every 3 min...I guess the mana recharge of about 200 over 1 min is supposed to help....

Thank the Overlord for Ice flame or I woulda been doing less damage than since before I was level 23...

Nice damage is cool but being completely one-dimensional at times does suck.

But what, exactly, are you saying the mob is immune to? Poison nukes hit. One poison dot hits. Devastation, an ae poison dot, has this issue 100% of the time on certain mobs. Obviously it's not poison immunity, or disease immunity, since Chaotic lands.

I'm not trying to argue that it's clearly not affecting it... but what immunity would you say this is? To AE spells? To level 50 spells? Because it isn't immunity to poison. I'm wondering if this is just a bug with certain spells, or if they hard-coded immunity to certain powerful spells as a line-item.
