Updated: September 14th 2005... </b></font>Atdan started a thread <a href="http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=24&message.id=6982" target="_blank">here</a>, which answers a lot of common questions that people spam these boards with. Please post things I haven't covered or things you think aren't correct in this thread and I'll edit them into the top post. Also if anyone has any information on how to get this thing stickied it'd be appreciated. Links to screenshots/threads would be nice too. <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>New: Current Issues</b></font> ... <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>New: So what changed?</b></font> This has been discussed to death in several forums. Pretty much every spell is now different and you will have to adapt. The best thing to do is just read your spell descriptions, practice and figure out how best to fight now. <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>What adept 3's should I get made (because once clearly isn't enough)?</b></font> Well since you didn't read this FAQ and just made a new post about it anyway kindly go and stand in the corner, <b>in shame</b>. For everyone else try scrolling down a bit. There's a handy colour coded list. <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>What is the Warlock?</b></font> <strike> Warlocks are a damage class with a minor in utility. We do one thing really well and that's front loaded damage. I personally consider myself to be most useful when you need to remove adds from a large encounter before focusing on the named. On long drawn out fights I tend to have aggro issues and my dps can suffer from having to slack off a bit. We can only wear very light armour so our mitigation is about as bad as it can possibly be.</strike> Our primary source of damage is now area effect damage spells. With the combat update our single target damage has been reduced. While we can use encounter AEs as single target spells it isn't as efficient. It is clear that Sony want us to be AE specialists. <strike> Our primary source of damage is single target direct damage spells. We do however have a decent line of AEs (Absolutions) and some DoTs (Steal Breath / Dark Emanations).</strike> <strike> Our utility comes in the form of straight up power pool increase, out of combat power regen, power transfers (can't say I've ever needed to use mine), resist buffs (mostly poison, some magic), a long duration stun and proc buffs (3 combat, 2 reactive).</strike> Our utility comes in the form of two group buffs and three single target buffs. The Seal line of buffs reduce resists on spells by raising the effective casting level of the group. The other group buff increases max group power as well as poison and disease. Our three single target buffs are a single target poison damage DoT melee proc, a reactive AE proc and a reactive power tap/regen over time. We are (possibly) in demand for groups but we can also solo very well (easier 23+) when grouping is not an option. As an example if you check out the Splitpaw Saga board you will see Warlocks are one of the few classes not whining about not being able to solo it. <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>Can I be a Warlock? What about Qeynos? Ogres? Trolls? etc.</b></font> Certainly. Any character can be a Warlock regardless of race or starting city. Let me repeat that. People from Qeynos CAN be Warlocks. There is no need to betray to Freeport. Certain races may be at a slight disadvantage to begin with since they have a lower starting intelligence. However there is a lot of gear to increase this stat and things even out as better gear becomes available to you. <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>What is the best reason to pick to the Warlock class?</b></font> Style <i>baby</i>. <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>Is there a Warlock channel?</b></font> Yes its <b>highkeep.warlockchannel</b>. <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>Warlock vs. <font color="#ff9900">Wizard</font>?</b></font> New: As of the combat update Warlocks focus on AE damage and Wizards focus on single target. Copied from Atdan's post: "<span></span>Well it depends on your play style. Research the classes further and pick which one you think you’ll have the most fun with". <strike> My personal opinion is it basically comes down to what colour you want your nukes to be. Big firey and orange or clouds of green and purple gas. There are other differences too but there are tons of threads discussing them and this FAQ isn't going to devolve into one of those. Lets face it, either way you're going to end up a dress wearing pansy.</strike> <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>What do Warlock spell effects look like?</b></font> <font color="#99ff00"> Dark Distortion</font> line causes a ball of green fluff to fly towards the mob. Both you and the mob are then engulfed in a cloud of green gas. <font color="#9933cc"> Suffocating Breath</font> line causes a ball of purple fluff to fly towards the mob. The mob is then covered in a kind of purpley. <font color="#cc99ff"> Noxious Bolt line</font> causes a ball of purple energy/electricity to arc towards the mob. The mob is then engulfed in a cloud of purple gas. <font color="#99ffff"> Ice Flame</font> causes a bunch of icy spears to fly towards the mob impaling it. The mob is then covered in bright white fire. <font color="#ff0000">Devastation</font> floaty skulls fly to the mobs it hits streaming purple fluff behind them. When the DoT runs out each mob gets hit with a rather large floaty glowy orange hammer. <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>Look! I solo'd this awesome Epicx20 space bat angel dragon!!!!111</b></font> No. Just no. <b>Don't post it</b>. No one wants to see. Just go away. <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>I'm grouping with another Warlock and it says my spells can't take effect?! (FIXED)</b></font> As of the combat update all DoT damage stacks regardless of whether two people cast the same spell at the same time. <strike> In Everquest II DoTs and other detrimental effects of the same type, applied to mobs by players (from spells, combat arts or whatever), do not stack. Only the spell from the higher level character will land. This means if someone else is already running something like Steal Breath on a mob then you won't be able to use your Steal Breath until the other one runs out. This is especially problematic with the must have level 30 training selection Belengere's Sapping Salvo. This spell has a DoT component (lasts roughly as long as the BSS recast timer) and this prevents more than one Warlock in the same group/raid from using the spell at the same time.</strike> <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>How do my different AE lines work? </b></font> Warlocks get four types of AE spell... - Negative Absolution --> Null Absolution --> Nil Absolution = Awesome <strike>Decent</strike> AE Damage + <strike>Dispell + (Null and Nil have DoT component)</strike>. These AEs have max of 5 targets and are all on separate timers. - Putrid Cloud --> Grievous Blast --> Dark Nebula = Single target stun + Good <strike>terrible </strike>AE damage. - Suffocating Cloud --> Abysmal Fury = PBAE (situational) + Interupt + Decent <strike>terrible</strike> AE damage over time (initial + 3 ticks every second). - Devastation = Very short duration AE DoT over a period of 6 seconds. Massive damage. Max 5 targets. Stuns targets when DoT ends. <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>Why is Freeze/Flashfreeze getting resisted all the time?! Useless!</b></font> Stop. Press L. Scroll down to Subjugation. Check how far it is off the current max? Yeah that's right. Low subjugation for your level means spells using that skill (stuns, roots etc.) will get resisted a lot. Cast your roots and stuns as often as possible in order to work this skill up. <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>What do I do with Nil Crystals? Where did they come from?</b></font> A whole bunch of spells now use Nil Crystals. When a mob dies under the effect of certain spells (Curse of Darkness being the first at level 25) you are granted a Nil Crystal. These are temporary and you can have up to 50 in a stack. They are used for casting two kinds of spells. <strike> The first is the Abhorrent Gift line, which starts at level 32. This is a 10 minute group buff that increases the max power pool of the group by quite a bit. This spell does not consume the Nil Crystals. You just need one in your inventory.</strike> The second is Netheros, which you receive at level 48. This summons a dumb fire pet that lasts for a short while. This spell does consume a Nil Crystal every time it is cast. <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>Int, Power and Damage?</b></font> Int now affects spell damage. The effects aren't exactly staggering... <strike> Contrary to what the manual says Int does not affect your damage... yet. The whole spell system is currently under going a massive rebuild and we can expect this to go live sometime around the release of the first expansion. Int affecting damage is supposed to be included in this. For now having over 200 int gives diminishing amounts of power returns so once you reach that point getting more raw power is a better option.</strike> <font color="#ccff00"><b><font size="3">Upgrading my invis spells? Why?</font></b></font> <strike> </strike>Invis spells no longer upgrade.<strike> Thanks Fepple for reminding me about this. Invis spells work on a level basis. They have a max mob level, which you can pass by without detection. By upgrading your invis spells you increase the max level of mob that you can invis past. This is useful for shard runs, exploring or whatever else you think you may need invis for.</strike> <font color="#ccff00"><b><font size="3">What's the deal with roots?</font></b></font> I won't talk about Ethereal Bindings or it's training upgrade here. Those spells are quickly replaced. What it comes down to is this. Warlocks get three lines of roots... <strike> <font color="#ffff00"> Frozen Manacles</font>: You get this at level 19 and it's your staple root. 2 second cast time and 9 second refresh. If you're quick you can land this before Freeze/Flashfreeze runs out. In my experience it has approx 20% chance to hold if you land a damage spell. It's useful for soloing non-heroic mobs and also for bridging the gap between Bony Grasps. You will still use this at 50.</strike> <strike><font color="#ffff00"> Paralysing Fear</font>: You get this at level 33 and it's a shadow of it's former self. Originally this spells worked by rooting the mob. When this root broke (by damage or running out) the mob would be feared every single time for a significant period of time. This combined with other FM and stuns could be used to solo heroic mobs. However this was nerfed. Big time. Now it works as follows. PF roots the mob. You damage the mob. The root breaks and the mob has a spell applied to it. This spell lasts about 8 seconds and during that time if you nuke the mob again it has a small chance to be feared. If it happens to fire this fear will break instantly if the mob takes any other damage. In short this is for parking mobs only. You can use it bridge the gap between Bony Grasps but only if you're 100% sure there are no DoTs on the mob. It also has a significantly longer cast time than FM.</strike> <strike><font color="#ffff00"> Bony Grasp</font>: The holy grail of roots. This root works as follows. Four second cast time, 36 second duration and 45 second recast timer. It will root the target and ANY mob surrounding it regardless of whether they are part of the same encounter. This can be annoying but here's the good part. NOTHING can break Bony Grasp. If it's not resisted that mob is stuck there for 36 seconds and you can do whatever the hell you like it during that time. Some would call this overpowered. I call it useful. This is very useful while soloing in the new Splitpaw zone and can also be used to prevent yourself from drawing aggro in a group situation.</strike> <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>Training Options?</b></font> <strike> You get a choice of four class specific abilities at levels 10, 20, 30 and 40. <font color="#ffff00"> Level 10...</font> - Shielding Upgrade: Keeps growing forever like Magi's Shielding and has better stats - Best choice simply because it lasts so long. - Root Upgrade: - DoT Upgrade: Fire based upgrade to Static Pulse. Not a bad choice but again it won't last that long. - AE Upgrade: Oh god no. Early AEs are horrible damage for the aggro they generate. <font color="#ffff00"> Level 20...</font> - Blaze Upgrade: Not bad but probably also pointless once you're running Dark Distortion and Ice Spike together. - Melee Proc Upgrade: Not bad but only half the damage of Venomous Runes you get shortly after. - Painful Meditation Upgrade: Not bad but Painful Meditation Adept 3 is better. - Tongue Twist Upgrade: The added damage is negligible and the level cap is only one or two higher. Has a cool floaty skull graphic though. <font color="#ffff00"> Level 30... </font> - It is highly recommended that you pick <b>Belengere's Sapping Salvo</b> here. Dark Distortion Adept 3 may be better to start with but the lifetap, power drain, DoT effect and fully grown superior damage make this a very good choice. - Another possibility is the Negative Absolution upgrade. This gives an AE interupt <b>that works on epic mobs</b>, dispells 81 levels of buffs and does ~300 damage when mastered. It also has a very short cast time at only 1 second. <font color="#ffff00"> Level 40...</font> - Aura of Darkness Upgrade: 10.7 second stun. Very, very good. - Noxious Bolt Upgrade: Some people like this. Noxious Bolt Master 1 is superior (but obviously rare). Also once they fix Soul Flay this is probably going to be a bad choice.</strike> <font color="#ccff00"><b><font size="3">What are my fun spells and where do I get them?</font></b></font> We get 6 fun spells at levels 20, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50. These consist of 3 illusions (can be cast on ourselves, other group members or group members pets) and 3 familiars (pets that follow you around but don't do anything else). Some people have managed to get the familiars to tank for them by using mob AE attacks to trigger a defensive response. Personally I've managed to get a pet to aggro a mob but it doesn't actually attack or hold aggro or anything. These spells are purchased from the spell vendor for the appropriate tier (the guys in the caster guilds that sell App2's that no one ever bothers with). In Freeport these guys are located in the Academy Of Arcane Scientists. In Qeynos they are sold from scribes in the Arbos Tree in Eldarr Grove (lvl 20) and the scribe next to Accountant Fowler in QH (lvl 30). 20: Toad illusion - Kraylith's Curse Of The Toad. 30: Toad familiar - Kraylith's Minor Familiar. 35: Bat illusion - Yreth's Bat Vexation. 40: Bat familiar - Yreth's Flying Friend (may just be called Bat Familiar). 45: Rat illusion - Erqu's Hex Of The Rat. 50: Raven familiar - Erqu's Emissary (may just be called Raven Familiar). Fun tip: Get the Zygomid pet shroom from the Splitpaw AP and use your illusions on it. You can make the tiniest rat/bat/toad in the world! <font color="#ccff00" size="3"><b>What forms does Netheros take?</b></font> Netheros is now always a Nightblood. <strike> App1: An air based pulsating blob. Adept1: A land based pulsating blob. Has tentacles. Adept 3: A big black wolf. Master 1: A Nightblood.</strike> <font color="#ccff00"><b><font size="3">Must have Adept 3's and a few what were they thinkings!</font></b></font> <font color="#66cc00"> Swampbane wrote the following...
