View Full Version : Oh that Aggro

Hi warlocks, I've been a monk, an illusionist (that one's retired for sure) and a guardian, and I know the aggro issue from the tanking side pretty well. So now i've ventured into the realm of the big nukers and dpsers and now have a 23 warlock with an adept III Dark Distortion. Needless to say, I've found out the hard way just how much of an aggro magnet I am. I complete an HO with DD doing 400+ points plus the HO damage and viola! I've got 3 or 4 new found friends by my side! So, my humble entreaty to you is to help me manage this aggro. I know tanking, and I know to hold off the big nuke until the tank has had time to build up some hate. I usually wait until I see his second taunt skill go off. However, one thing that seems to bring the aggro on real real fast under any circumstances is an HO AOE finished by me (since I'm the one who has to finish it). Is there any way to deal with this? Most of the time now, when the AOE HO comes up I just leave it, because I know what'll happen. <div></div>
Avoid completing HOs. Period. Other classes can finish off most of them and you don't need the extra aggro. Regardless of any of the advice anyone has given on these boards I still consistently steal aggro around 20% on a ^^ xp mob. I've taken to just using my 10 second stun (as a preventative measure rather than a reaction to getting aggro) at this point and carrying on. It doesn't always help. <div></div>

<div></div>Yea, just dont go overboard with the nukes. What I do is nuke after the mob has reached 90% life and the tank has taunted (sometimes they dont /shrug). I usually do 1 HO after the mob reaches at leash 50% life and I have not done more then 30% damage to get it that far. However sometimes aggro will still happen because of some dumb bug with group mobs. Once ya start grouping more though you will get a better feel for the hate generation ability that we can do really well. <P>Take the time to put in the debuffs while the tank is getting agg. The poison debuffs as well as the str/int debuff seem to have very little hate value... I can even cast them on a mob on the pull and they won't run for me. Get your first big hit in then layer in some smaller hits, while keeping frozen whorl going. Once its around 50% go for gonzo and have stun ready to give a break if the mob turns to you. </P> <P>Avoid completing HO's unless the mob is near dead, as stated above. Avoid using AE spells early. And if it's a newer tank, politely, gently suggest they could use their group buffs during battle to drastically improve their aggro-holding ability. Most tanks in 20s (and too many in 40s sadly ) don't do this. Just be gentle about it, and use tells to let them know how they can help you. </P>

<DIV>Im currently lvl 34 and I hardly ever use ANY AoE's except with a select few tanks I know. Reason being is I just cant seem to find a tank that uses their AE aggro correclty. When I DO use it, i wait till the first mob in the encounter is down to 40% or so in health, that usually gives the MT enough time to drop a few taunts. If I end up peeling off a few mobs in the encounter after I AE, I know the tank isnt doing their AE taunt job so I just dont both with AEs anymore while in that group.</DIV>
