View Full Version : Why does Protoflame suck?

I took out my 60 wizard for fun today since we were raiding lockjaw for our alt raid that we do every week. It was a 2 min fight since no one was on. I did 590 DPS and was hoping I could do a bit better. I was beat by a 60 brigand who did 604 DPS and a 70 assassin who did 1169 DPS.

Iooking through my logs I can't help but notice that my DPS would have been better had I not casted protoflame. Of the 2 mins he was up he only landed 1 attack for 186 DMG. [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn]? Why are they nerfing him in the next patch as he made up a mere 1% of my DMG?

What level was the creature you were fighting? I find it really hard to believe he would only land one hit on a mob that was under orange.

I have no clue why it would only land one hit, whenever I use protoflame/protoferno it hits continuously, every couple sec, even on orange mobs he hits fairly regularly. It is possible that you were not close enough to read all of the hits it landed. This is a useful spell especially on raid mobs....IMO it does not suck.

Can someone tell me how to post parses from ACT on to these forums? It is something that I always wanted to know how to do and would help for some to see my point.

After further testing it seems its not just raid mobs he is having trouble hitting but anything above green. I tested him agaisnted a yellow Djiin in poets palace in which me a tank and a healer purposely dragged out the fight to see his potential. He did better than he did againsted lockjaw but not much better.

Againsted a lvl 62 Djiin he swung (or whatever he does lol) a total of 13 times and landed a total of 6 times. Still about a 40-50% hit ratio.

If someone could explain to me how to post a parse on to this forum that would help cause I really would like to know what is wrong with this spell.

Beghard wrote:What lvl is your spell............................duh

Protoflame scales with the caster, so in his case the pet is lvl60. Other than that spell levels have no effect on anything really.

Protoflame is a spell, just like ball of lava or ice nova. The better the quality of the spell (i.e. adept1, adept3, master etc..) the less chance of it being resisted. I have a master 1 Proto Inferno and that little ball of lovable flame does wonders for my DPS

Whiterussian

70 Wizard

Evolution, Splitpaw

Atm he is only adept III since he is an alt and most of my money/DKP is spent of my berserker.

his hits can vary greatly

also at lvl 60 you have protoflame, not protoferno if im not mistaken.

I have protoferno m2 and he hits about 70% of the time on yellow con mobs/epics. Of course if they are fire resistant or fire immune he doesn't do squat and dont bother casting him.

also you need to debuff heat in order to increase his dmg as his mele is fire based.

Protoferno isn't bad at all...because I had all the other master 1 choices (and iceshield is only 50 pts of difference between M1 and M2) I respeced to Protoferno, and it helps a bit. On mobs without good heat debuffs, like in HoS, it was hitting repeatedly for 500-750 dmg. So it works just fine. In the labs it hits for significantly less, around 300-500. Depends on the mob, but it lasts for 45s and doesn't take much time to cast, its an efficient spell, which is exactly what wizards need to maintain good sustained dps.
Message Edited by ShreddedWheat on 06-13-2006 12:00 PM

Out of the entire lockjaw raid he only doing 186 DMG which is hardly even worth casting.

When I tested it again againsted a djiin in poets palace he still only had a 48% ish hit ratio. He does just fine againsted blues and greens and even whites however yellows and above seem to make him miss like 3/4 of the time.

Maybe protoferno is better I dunno, but I talked to the wizards who play the class as their main in my guild. They are lvl 70 and saying they have never had a problem like this and that it is a wonderful spell...I just don't see it.

Part of it is that protoflame sucks...protoferno is definitely an improvement in every regard.

Message Edited by ShreddedWheat on 06-13-2006 12:21 PM
