Hail!

Thanks for your reply. My best friend is frozen manicles, however since this only roots one npc; if your fighting a group, say Giants for arguements sake; the others can then get close enough to pound me! (Unless im missing something)

For the most part im fine, its just normally grouped npcs that have a tendancy to get close enough, or if FM fails or is resisted

I sure hope its not my playing style.....though I am open to suggestions:

My standard form of attack is FM, Heroic Oppertunity - Ice Spike (adept III), then either Ball of Fire (adept I) or finger of frost, then a combo of Ice spike, ball of fire or breath of the tyrant - that nukes most things.

Is that good, bad or indifferent?

Thanks

K

You should never hit the auto attack button unless you are standing behind the mob. Because of reposte you will take more damage than it is worth. Even when you are in a group if you are running around behind a mob so you can hit auto attack you are wasting nuke time.

That said... make sure your gear keeps up with your level. Makes a big difference.

Also... If you are being hit you have 2 options...

1.Stand toe to toe and nuke like mad hoping you get the mobs hp down in time. Dangerous...

2.Stun, root, step back, debuff, nuke. Safer... Frustrating sometimes when root consistantly breaks, but still safer...

It is good to be a wizard...

Autoattack!!!

Lol not used that since i was about level erm 2!

I'm fine as long as they dont get close, its once they get close i get knocked-about. I spent a fortune last night making sure everything was upgraded, made some difference.

I'm going to try a few different techniques tonight and see if that makes any difference, though standing toe-to-toe wont be one of them!

thx

K

Hail!

Morning/Afternoon/Evening!

Well after a very long evening and some very close calls; I can now safely say I think I have solved my punchbag problem. In my efforts to solve my problem I advanced to level 25 and recieved Boreal. And as if someone was smiling down on me I then got a drop of Adept I to increase it.

Actually come to think of it I think I will post a new post about Boreal.

Thanks for your insight everyone, was very helpful.

Krollin

Smirking more like it. Boreal is one of those spells with such limited use that it's better to just leave it in your spell book giving you space for a more useful button on your toolbar (something like fishing, or summon lager)

As for strategies, I always found it better to be flexible. Rooting and backing away would seem to be safer, and if the mob has a lot of xp still, then it's really your only choice. But, there is a point where it is safer to stand your ground and nuke down the mob when root breaks. Usually determined by the fact that you will get hit twice for rooting (once during casting, once as you back away), and by the density of aggro mobs in the area. If there are a lot, continually avoiding adds just slows you down and usually means an extra hit or two. So basically, it's better to stand toe to toe if the mob is less 2 nukes away from death.

And besides, you are going to get swung at everyonce in a while (even if it is just running to a dungeon). It's a good idea to make sure that your defense remains close to max at all times. The occasional toe to toe will help you stay safer in the long run, as long as you don't start thinking of yourself as a tank that is

edit: I forgot to mention in the getting hit while using the root strategy: It depends on where you're fighting. If you can always maintain enough room between you and the mob so that you can reroot before it gets to you, then it doesn't really apply).

Message Edited by Tarkadal on 08-17-2005 10:08 AM

Only time I ever melee anything is when I am really bored, it is green/grey, just about dead and I know it can't hurt me much. When I get bored with hitting the mob for 25-50 HP a pop I kill it with a fast nuke. Always remember the following... Distance is a Wizards best friend. This is one of the most important things to remember. Invent your own verses to "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" and imagine Marilyn Monroe singing em. They can't hit you if they can't see you. Invis is your second best friend. Happiness is a good stun. When that root breaks there is nothing like stopping a mob cold for 8 seconds, in that time you can reroot and regroup. Or run! You wear a dress and you hit like a girl so just don't do it. You will not impress anyone with your "l33t melee skillz". Get a Horse asap, the fastest you can afford! Why? Because you are wearing a dress, run like a 7 year old girl with a broken ankle, you have 5HP and being able to outrun mobs when you are solo is a good thing. If you draw aggro in a group/raid setting do NOT run like the aforementioned 7 year old girl with a broken ankle while screaming 'GET IT OFF ME!!!111" Nothing ticks of melee and healers more then someone doing that-the melee can't reestablish aggro to get it off you and the healers can't hit you because you are out of range. Stand there and take your beating like a grownup. Learn how to control aggro and what to do if you do draw it. As far as aggro goes you always want to be #2, not #1.

That will knock about 2pp off a Misty Mustang. If you don't want to do that the good ol' Totem of the Wolf comes in real handy and they are fairly cheap. I keep 5 in my bags at all times even tho I have an Elddarian Charger, they come in real handy in dungeons where you can't cast a horse. You can outrun most stuff with that on tho the barking does get annoying.

Krollin, Couple other things... Stuns are probably one of your best weapons, they can save your hide in a solo setting and save a group from wiping. Personally I try to get all my stuns at adept 3 or better if possible, that way I know they are more then likely going to stick. Most Wizards it seems sorta forget they have them. -If your root is about to drop hit the mob with a stun right as it is dropping. That will keep him (if the stun sticks) at about the same distance he was from you. If your root is about to drop and hasn't recycled yet stun the mob, back up to just outside of casting range. Root should be recycled by the time mob gets in range so you can root him and avoid getting hit. -In a group setting always try to reserve one stun in case you draw aggro. If you do just stun the mob and move back. By the time stun wears off the mob is mad at the tank again and you are out of melee range. -If the tank is looking like he is going to die before the healer can land a heal on him stun the mob. A stunned mob does no damage and gives healer precious time to land the heal. People are most grateful when you save them from a possible wipe in a dungeon. -If a healer draws heal aggro you can save them by stunning the mob, too. Gives the tank a chance to reestablish aggro and for healer to move. Added benefit of this is that healers do appreciate this and will look "kindly" on you. Remember that every group is different. When playing with new people take it easy the first couple of mobs until you get the feel for just how far you can push it without overaggroing. Big nukes do not impress anyone when they have to rez you after each mob. This is the "Try not to die" rule.

Message Edited by Ennis on 08-18-2005 06:09 AM
