Ok heres my take on the Wizard and experiences and the spells so far. It might help other wizards in using and picking spells but also some things that I think need to be changed that really wouldnt require a whole lot of work.Static Pulse + Tayils searing orb (upgrade)Handy at lower levels when you can use it and run around till they die. For some reason even level 40 stuff doesnt seems to resist it, although hitting them for 8 damage is hardly worth it. Still little damage is better than none.Lightningt burstAlso for some reasons seems to work on level 40 stuff. A good early spell (can you get this at adept?) I still keep it on hotbar as its quick to use to finish HO'sMagis ShieldingUseable at all levels and never goes grey. No problems with this spell.Arcane BindingsLooks cool and a seems to hold. Very useful early on when running away.Arcane AugurYou need this at any level very usefulCure ArcaneOnly seen it work once or twice. Are there higher levels of this available or do we get a replacement later? I am quite keen on group buffs and stuff but havent seen this at adept.Gift of the magiIncreases power pool mainly, useful early on when you cant fill up all your concentration slots.Storm of lightningVery impressive looking spell that doesnt seem to get resisted too much at higher levels. Doesnt hit for much damage but if you have enough enemies I still think even at higher levels its worth casting.Dispell ArcaneHoping it will become more useful later. Only needed to use this a few times not seen any upgrades. I have used it to remove enemy wards in Stormhold but havent really found many other creatures to use it on yet.Burning RadianceSince they changed the spell time from 3 mins to 15 this has been worth casting even at higher levels.Vivid SealLooks good and protects from heat. What early on attacks with heat though? cant think of much.See InvisibilityIm sure this has some use but its replaced later with snow filled steps. Are there invisible enemies?BlazeFinally a good low level nuke, very handy and looks cool.Painfull MeditationVery handy in fights and im glad its not on the same timer as discretionary flowFreezing whorlStacks up will with static pulse for extra damageConflagrationOk here it starts to go a bit wrong. There is hardly any sort of animation for this spell and I have tried full settings. It just seems kind of lazy. All they need to do is put the animation for blaze over each character. Needs a shorter cast time. I only used this early on mainly to pull enemies. If it had a shorter cast time im sure higher level people would still use it.Ice SpikeExcellent even at high levels. Lots of adepts available for this also. For the new player its well worth getting at adept 1.Freeze + Lingering frostIn my opinion probably the best looking spell I have so far. I reccoment the upgrade daenors lingering frost. Very powerful and is a good temporary root.Tounge Twist.Has helped once or twice with casting enemies.IncinerateAnother DOT this is quite good with whorl and pulse stacked on as well. Has a cool burning effect as well.Summon shadowsUseful for getting those shards back. Doesnt seem to be much point in upgrading this though.AccordLooks good and helps buff your team.Frozen Manacles. An updated root. Good animation but I find it gets resisted too easily.Chilling WindA good group dot. I would love to see some more adepts for this, I have only come accross 1. Anyone know adept damage?Breath of the TyrantHandy to use with blaze but I find its still just too weak and even ice spike seems to do more damage which you get about 5 levels earlier. T'Lys Minor familiarWizard fluff spell at level 20 which you can get in Queynos harbour. A lot of people think its worthless but the cat has saved me lots of time from enemy aggro. Especially when running away. I would like it if the controls did more than follow and stay though. I want a cat hiss button to aggro enemies! :o)Lightning FlashPretty handy for finishing a HO and does respectable group damage.Ball of FireA serious nuke. Should be able to buy an adept one. From what I hear adept 3 isnt worth the money and Ice spear is adept 2 level with ice anyway which you can get soon. I think the damage is fine with this but, ball of fire? looks more like a furry orange football. It needs to be made bigger or more threatning.Snow filled stepsLooks pretty and lets your team see invis and boosts levelsAmplificationVery useful. Gives a noticeable boostBorealHandy for adds although it breaks too easily and I didnt notice much difference from app 2 to adept 1FlametoungeUseful if you have a quick hitting group as it deals extra damage of up to 69 but only a 5% chance to do so? needs a higher percentage I think everything else with it I think is fine. Looks very cool as well. Blazing IntimitationGood nuke and a temporary bind. I notice recently they have put some basic form of animation in but theres still not much there and before there was nothing at all! Surely they can "borrow" a few animations from different casting classes for this?Plasmatic PulseOnly useful for quickly finishing a HO pretty much useless damage wise.Essence harvestVery useful for getting power back although I would like to see the adept one recieve a little more and prehaps 2 seconds less stun for the wizard.PyreHappy with this at adept 1 especially larger groups even if it is just the ball of fire animation several times.Icy CoilGot this at adept one. There isnt much of a coil to it is there? why not have the animation as it is but also add the frozen manacles animation over it (the coil effect).Westfends Ice spearOne of the spells you choose. Basically ball of fire adept 2 but uses cold instead of heat and white breath of the tyrant effetcs...yawwwn. Could be used as it is but with the accord animation as well on the enemy?BenumbReplacement for touge twist. But I never got much use out of tounge twist before getting this. Same animation as wellDistorted visionsInvisibility replace. I have heard that "upgrading" to adept one is actually worse. You use more power and move slower.Surge of FlamesVery usefull for aiding the healer.Masters strikesDo they grow much with levels? They always seem to hit fairly low. Better than nothing I suppose.Ok so a bit of a rant on my experiences to level 32. I am very happy with the game so far and enjoy playing my class but I am finding it harder to solo later on in levels. I know I complained a lot about the spells but your supposed to be a wizard! some of them look like indoor fireworks!. I realise that other players dont want a screen full of magical obscurities but surely you think some of them need beefing up?. I heard the level 50 Ice comet is just a blue ball of flames say it isnt so!.
I just upgraded Distorted Visions to App4 and it lessens my movement. An explanation as to why would be helpful, but I don't think an explanation will come =/

NEW SPELLS ADDED!!

The-Plethora wrote:

Dispell Arcane
Hoping it will become more useful later. Evidently there is some tell-tale graphic on mobs to indicate they have some sort of removable enhancement cast on them? I don't see it. Would be nice if when you targeted a mob an icon came up below their power meter to indicate if they were buffed in some way so as to give me a better idea when to use this, and it's disappearance to inform me if it even worked (much nicer than a small text indication washed away by my damage numbers)

See Invisibility
Im sure this has some use but its replaced later with snow filled steps. I've never seen this break early. The only thing I can think upgrading it would help on is resists. It can be helpful in a clutch, like stopping a mob from beating your priest to death, but I don't use it all that much. Usually if a mob is beating on the priest and the tank is too busy, I'll just nuke it. Occasionally though the situation arises where it is better to mez it.

Also the Adept I drop is fairly common and you can usually find it fairly cheap (I looted mine off the skeletons around tower 4 in Thundering Steppes) so you may as well uprgade it.

Blazing Intimitation
Good nuke and a temporary bind. Also has a chance to DoT, which it usually does. Though I used it constantly before, now that I've hit 39 and Immolation is in the rotation, I'm not using this spell much at all anymore, but I still do have it pegged as my HO advancer on my HO hotkey.

Pyre
Happy with this at adept 1 especially larger groups even if it is just the ball of fire animation several times.

This takes too long to cast. There isnt much of a coil to it is there? why not have the animation as it is but also add the frozen manacles animation over it (the coil effect).

Great spell. Good intial damage, good DoT, good debuff to my BoFlames. Any mob with a least one up arrow gets this spell right off the bat. This is one of the few spells I'm keen on getting as high a level of as possible, as I understand it is useful all the way to level 50.

Westfends Ice spear
One of the spells you choose. Basically ball of fire adept 2 but uses cold instead of heat and white breath of the tyrant effetcs...yawwwn. Could be used as it is but with the accord animation as well on the enemy?

Intially I choose the AoE rain spell instead of this one. Recently, with /respec, I switched to this one and retired my BoFire. Even at 39 this spell is still in my rotation. Shares the same timer with BoFire, which is a long one, so it isn't used as much as BoFlames.

Distorted visions
Invisibility replace. I have heard that "upgrading" to adept one is actually worse. You use more power and move slower.

You definetely move slower (not sure if that was intentional), but like the previous invisibility, upgrading it increases the effective level range of mobs against which it is useful.

Masters strikes
Do they grow much with levels? They always seem to hit fairly low. Better than nothing I suppose.

They have been growing with levels. At 38 my mastery strikes hit around 230-250.

I chose my master strikes on the likely occurence of effective targets. Therefore, so far I have chosen Orc (originally I chose gnoll, being from Qeynos, but later switched to Orc because of Zek/DFC), Skeleton (skeletons are everywhere), Giant (giants are everywhere, and I'm sure there will be many more giants in expansions to come), Goblin (Runnyeye, and probaly both Solusek and Permafrost, so I seriously suggest you pick this), and Lizardman (CT).

Now I'll move forward a bit

33 Tether -> An upgraded root, holds relatively well as long as you don't do damage. can drop a DoT on it (Icy Coil) but it generally won't last the duration of the spell. Any large nuke will almost certainly break it. Unless the mob is grey, in which case it will hold forever

34 Freezing Wind -> This is an upgrade to the spell I originally choose in preference to Westfends, the name of which I now forget. So not only did I replace my original choice, a nice AoE DoT, anyways when I switched to Westfends, I got an upgraded DD over BoFire. This is a great spell, does alot of initial and over time damage. Spend money to upgrade this. And don't bother using on less than three mobs. If there are only two mobs just cast Icy Coil on them and save your power. But if your group is pulling swarms of 5 or more mobs, look out and watch the numbers fly.

35: Concurrence -> This is an upgrade in the Accord line of spells. I cast this sometimes, but the effect, if any, is so minial I don't tend to worry about it overly much.

35: Frostbound Gift -> This is a new group buff, not overwriting any previous buff. It increase the power pool of all members and increase elemental and arcane resistances of all member. It only lasts about ten minutes. I always have this up, but heres a tip, re-cast this spell before it drops, because if you wait till it drops you're going to have to wait for the 3 minutes timer. Whenever I have a second and this spell get's below 5 minutes remaining I'll just refresh it.

36: Scorching Pulse -> Uprgade to Lightning Flash (level 22). Another AoE. Good spell, fast cast and re-charge. Spend the money to upgrade it.

37: Ball of Flames -> Boom! Now you have two giant nukes on seperate timers, and BoFlames recharges 2-3 times as fast as Westfend's/BoFire. Buy or find an opal and have someone make you an Adept III version of this spell. I had mine made before I hit 37 ready to scribe. At 37 the Adept III's minimum listed damage (500) was 5 points higher than the App I's listed maximum damage (495). The maximum damage is listed at 750. You are now doing an enormous amount of damage to single targets.

Ball of Flames, Westfend's (slowest recharge of 3), Plasmatic Pulse, Ball of Flames, Plasmatic Pulse, repeat.

38: Depart -> Sweet mamah jamah an EVAC! And only 13 levels after the scouts. I bought an App II of a city vedor just to check, doesn't seem to upgrade effective radius or decrease power usage. Perhaps a better version decrease the chance that someone might be left behind. Not sure.

38: Descry-> This is a single target buff. It significantly raises the WIS and INT stats on the target. As such, if I have the time and mana, (and the group isn't running around, because like all our buffs this spell's range is pathetic) I cast this on all healers and all other mages. At the very least it's always on me (my INT last night in a full group was somewhere in the range of 240+).

39: Aurora -> Boreal upgrade

39: Immolation -> This spell is freaking incredible! It has a long cast time and a fairly long re-cast timer, but this is one incredible spell. On some tuffer double up mobs you might get it off twice. This spell is devastating to single mobs (this and a BoFlames = dead mob), and on double up group mobs it was the simplest thing to grab agro. In about three quick ticks this spell was hitting for 1100-1200 points of damage combined at Adept 3. At this point, finally, you really need to pay attention to what you are doing and can't just spam nuke. Up to this level, with even a fairly competent tank, I could more or less nuke to my hearts content and never worry about agro. Not any more, and frankly that's the way it ought to be. Our full out DPS should get a monster's attention. With Immolation, believe me it does.

Message Edited by Tyrant Invictus on 03-13-2005 08:22 AM

I run at 1280*1024 resolotion and have a good bit of screen space so I have 5 hotbars open and 2 windows. The only things I have taken off are freeze, which is replaced by lingering frost which is on the same timer (wouldnt have otherwise)and distorted visions which replaces the earlier invisibility spell. I have run, call for help and wave hello on my hotbar as well and have about 5 spaces left before I need to remove stuff.Blaze at adept 1 which you get at level 10 I think still seems to hit higher level stuff for over 100. I had a lot of trouble hitting in runnyeye against those boar things with ball of fire or westfends but using tyrant and blaze while they charged im sure blaze got more damage in overall. Thanks for the constructive replies guys very refreshing . I will give plasmatic pule another go and try and pick up the adept 1 and see how I get on. Heard good things about immolation. Ok we have levels up to 39 now, any level 50s want to give us their take on the last 11 levels?.
Message Edited by The-Plethora on 03-12-2005 05:20 AM
