I just wanted to fill you in on our plan of attack.

Since this problem is causing a freeze, we get no crash logs telling us what the client is in the process of doing.  We're going to implement some infinite loop detection into the client similar to what we have on the server.  This will let us detect an infinite loop situation and force a crash which should generate crash logs.  Hopefully this well help us determine exactly what is happening at the time of the freeze.

It will take us a bit of time to get this working and tested in the client, but I'll be sure to let you know when it has been done.  Hopefully we'll have it done in time for GU51.  If not, I'm sure we can make a hotfix to get it out there.

My most recent freeze rather rather new.

I was playing then after the battle everybody put there weapons away, the "ching sound" you get when people holster there swords the sound effect just repeated studdering over and over again for about  20 secounds and i could still move then the machine locked up.

I thought I would try something I disabled multi thread. since that is the new big feature that changed when I started getting lock ups.

Nothing happend so far but then again I have not had much time to play this week.

Spells ive frozen on:

* GroupWard ( Umbral Warding )

* SingleWard ( Ancient aegis )

* GroupBuff ( Runic Armor ) - this was on the way back to Xebnok rebuffing.

* GroupHeal ( Trancedant Aid )

I dont think it has to do to with lots of things going on at the same time.Ive been ina group with 3 ppl and frozen.

I tried to take a screenshot, but it doesnt work for some reason....its like the PC wasntable to copy the picture.

I got a screenshot in Guk: Halls of the Fallen today. The best way to do it if you want a window you cant currently target is get something smaller targeted and do a normal computer screenshot from that so you catch the background

Happened during my single target ward.

GU51 is now live.  Please let me know if you're still experiencing this freezing problem.

Problem still exists, could voice chat have anything to do with it? i have noticed most times someone is talking at the same time i crash, ALSO, i can hear people even though the game is frozen, and i have to end process to make the game close.

todays in the x2

It's possible voice chat could have something to do with it, but hard to tell with no crash logs.

Our next step, as I mentioned before, is to add some infinite loop checking that will force a crash log during a freeze so we can collect more data.

I'll keep this thread posted when we're ready to roll out an update.

One other thing, if you could check something for me.

Go to your Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.

Look at your Application, Security and System logs for any type of warning or error that occurs around the time you're freezing.

It is unrelated to voice chat.  This bug has been in game for YEARS. Long before voice chat was put in.

This is my last log from eq2 for an application crash ... none of the ones since seem to have generated a crash log. Odd. This one is from march 12th, so i think we can disregard it, i don't wait long to just go ctrl alt del and end process, if i get stuck i do it about 10 seconds after so it may not be long enough for the windows to generate a crash log?

Faulting application everquest2.exe, version 1.0.0.1, faulting module xul.dll, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x001ba090.

I dont think that one has anything to do with the crash though.

I had the exact problem like many others here. Some sounds seemed to repeat themselves for a few seconds and then the pc locked up.

I tried switching to software sound(Miles fast 2D Audio) instead of EAX and the problem disappeared. No crash for 4 days now.

But i would really like to play with EAX

I had this problem for a long long time it seems.  I went through some extensive tests with TSR's for about a month with no luck.  We tried everything under the sun from reloading game, deleting files, turning off sound, turning off sound acceleration, dropping graphics, installing new sound card, etc.  That said, the last thing he asked me to do was to clear my taskbar of any active programs.  I did that and still crashed.  However, I decided to turn off my firewall and suddenly I have not crashed in about a month.

I do not know if something changed b/c I have been playing this game since release with my firewall on, but for now it seems to have helped by turning it off.  I still notice, though, that at the end of group wards, as in the last tick before casting, there is a short hang-up, so there may still be a problem behind the scenes that perhaps my firewall was adding to.  Also, when named encounters die, the screen will freeze briefly and then continue when the chest pops.

When I locked up everytime I always Have voice chat box unchecked since I don't care for voice chat and do not have a PC headset that works. I hsve never used it once it has been disabled.  So unless the voice chat check box is broken I di not have any going on.........and I keep voice chat piped through speakers off since i don't want people screaming stuff though my loud speakers.

I also use EAX 4 or 3? what ever number it was I forget, the highest one with my sound blaster xi-fi 64mb

And my event  viewer does not have any log since the harddisk just stopped everytime nothing was recorded.,

Since the new update I have not locked up...yet

I am still locking up since the update. Voice chat is never enabled.

Seems to  happen after I have been in a zone longer than 45ish minutes. 90% of the time its on my group ward. Happens on single target ward and deathward as well.

I do not like to play with EAX off since the software AUdio sounds really bad so I never tried. Since I am still crashing as much I  could try it for a while but I won't like it at all.

EAX is creatives advanced realtime audio processing . stands for environmental audio extensions  you can only use this if your hardware supports it most built in motherboard audio does not, most non-creative sound chips do not. It generates a audio environment and changes sound effects in realtime  so if you ware in cave the foot steps ehco and sounds bounce off walls in a realstic way in 3d if you have 5 or more speakers..  sounds from outside a building are muffled correctly if you are inside.

It is  hardware acclerated  so If you have a high end sound card like the Xi-fi you can have faster framerate with better sound since the CPU is no longer doing the work and sounds much better than any other  video game sound.  It is even better than home theater DTS or dolby digtal.

There is 5 versions of EAX  everquest 2 supports upcto EAX 4.0 sue to the games age.  EAX 5.0 is only supported by sound blaster Xi-fi  in newer games liek crysis. This is what you need to use  or and older sound blaster audigy series if you do not have one.

http://us.creative.com/products/pro...8&product=14065

If your not using EAX then that might rule out being only an EAX bug.

Yes i can understand that. I dont like the software sound either but i dont want to crash on raids with EAX enabled. The crashes occur on all three EAX versions.

But maybe you could try disabling it for a day for testing purposes. If you dont crash this entire thing might really be an EAX issue. And if that would be the case the devs might have another clue how to fix this.

In my many tests with the TSR, we also tried the eax/dolby fix, and it didnt' pan out.  We also tried using default ui's and removing eq2 maps.  Those ideas didn't work either.

Here is a list of things that happened to me prior to the "removing all programs from taskbar/disable firewall" fix:

http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...topic_id=443088

Again, as I mentioned above, I have not crashed since my final discussion with the TSR I worked with, yet there still seems to be a delay on the wards and when named mobs die.  Last night in the x2 I didn't even see the mob die b/c the screen froze when he was near 1%.  When the game unfroze a few seconds later, the chest had been opened and I didn't see the loot immediately as normal.

Turned off EAX changed to the software dolby.    No crashing....yet      Game seems to use less ram now.  Before the game used over 1gb ram in lavastorm, and started to run choppy after a while of play.  l  now it just uses around 300 to 500 mb ram have not seen it go to over 1 gb like it was before.

Ram useage seems to grow  the longer the game is on with EAX at least on my system it seems to.

I havent been anywhere else but lavastorm for a few days might be the same there but when I spent hours with EAX in laval then I would go to window mode to do something else on my other monitor somtimes I would open task manger close things, and noticed everquest 2 ram useage.

I have not been in agroup yet either I might still freeze when i do. But man the game does not sound as cool anymore IF it is an eax problem I hope they fix it soon.  EAX seems to  have other isues like the sound poping underwater bug lots of people seem to have besides crashing.

I haven't seen any activity in this thread in about a month.   Are any of you still experiencing the problem or have any of our recent changes seemed to make a difference?

Rothgar, I believe the issue the thread is about is fixed.  All the other chatter, not sure it was related to specifically this bug.

My defiler has been ward cast crash free for a month now.  Given he's a boxed tune with a macro that casts those 2 wards non-stop, I'm probably a good test case for this one SMILEY

I used to see it semi-frequently, I've not seen it in a long while now.

I used to crash while casting group ward, but I haven't experienced this in a while.

So I guess the problem has been solved (at least for me).

I haven't frozen in a while either - according to application log the last time EQ2 closed unexpectedly was the 23rd, and that could have been unrelated to the freezing bug. I'm going to try turning back on other's spells, and if it's not fixed I'll probably have a freeze within a few days of playing. I'll post here in a few days with what happens.
